After seeing the incredible performances by Mary-Louise Parker and Denis Arndt as two strangers who connect in a London train station in Heisenberg at Samuel J Friedman Theatre, we headed to Richard Sandoval’s Zengo for a late night meal. The show made me think about relationships and how meeting one person can change your life. Worth seeing!
Still on my spicy drink kick, I ordered a Zengo Margarita ($14) made with Rancho Alegre blanco tequila, blood orange juice and serrano peppers. It didn’t disappoint.
Neither did their Thai lettuce wraps ($14) with a perfect blend of ground chorizo, lots of peanuts, chopped cilantro and tamarind chutney. I’d return just for this messy-to-eat but wonderful dish anytime. We had to ask for more napkins as the sauce was finger dripping and lickin’ spectacular. Do not miss!
I would, though, skip the Thai seafood ceviche ($16). The flavor of the sauce was good, but it hadn’t permeated the scallops, shrimp and calamari. In fact, the seafood tasted as if it was cooked ahead and then mixed with the chili-lime flavored sauce.
Do try the three bite-size charred tuna wonton tacos ($13) balanced with mango salsa and fresh guacamole.
On the server’s recommendation, we chose the pork carnitas noodles ($15) over the chili crab ones. The watery noodles came topped with a poached egg so overcooked that there was no runny yolk to dress the pasta. The hoisin pork, though, was so tender it melted in the mouth. I wish they had flavored the noodles with the sauce they used for the pork.
The miso-glazed black cod with spears of daikon radish and asparagus ($24) was just fine, although missing the menu-stated spicy chipotle in the glaze. I recommend their yummy sides ($8) of soy-glazed sweet potato cubes sprinkled with roasted pumpkin seeds and the wok-sauteed garlicky wild mushrooms.
My friend couldn’t resist the croissant bread pudding with caramelized banana slices, I tried the moist chocolatey tres leche topped with both a salted caramel and a chocolate sauce.
