Thaimee Love is a pop-up restaurant in the West Village from Thai Chef Hong Thaimee. She serves market-driven Thai comfort food. I was looking forward to sampling, especially after visiting Chiang Mai, her city, just before the pandemic lockdown.
Take note if you go that they have no liquor license. There is a liquor store up the street, which is where we got a Gruner Veltliner thinking it would go nicely with the cuisine. It did.
We couldn’t decide among the three small plates offered and so chose the sampling Ruam Mit Platter for two ($28). It included slices of fried yams and Kabocha squash — “Chiang Mai Fries” — in a red curry batter with coconut flakes served with a peanut relish and a red curry mayo; their Yum Pooh, a coconut and mango salad topped with crispy soft shell crab; and fried house-marinated meany pork ribs with makrut lime leaf chiles and a sweet pineapple chili sauce. I suggest doing to same as it’s a tasty way to sample all the apps.
After chatting with the waitstaff, we opted for the vegetable version of their Chiang Mai yellow curry soup, Khao Soy ($24), as our waiter offered to split it into two bowls for sharing. It contained noodles, pickled cabbage, Honeynut squash, baby corn and yellow and green zucchini. I’d recommend.
We also sampled their well-seasoned with chili, cilantro and garlic minced Berkshire pork served with crudites (romaine, red cabbage, carrots, cucumbers ) and sticky rice ($24).
Worth the visit.
