Tarry Lodge seemed like a good place to meet friends for a birthday celebration. After all it’s the positively reviewed new Mario Batali – Joe Bastianich place and I’m a fan of many of their NYC places including Casa Mono and Del Posto. I thought we couldn’t miss.
Our waiter was very attentive, but then disappeared. We tried to order wine from three servers — as each had stopped by to see whether we needed anything — before we got a bottle.
We chose the wine that was pushed— Toscana La Mozza Morellino di Scansano 2013 ($38) —as it seemed easier to just do so at this point.
Their kale salad was a refreshing blend of goat cheese, sliced radishes and strawberries, and chopped pistachios all sprinkled with goat cheese ($11). I suggest the tender octopus topped with shishito peppers all dressed in squid ink ($14).
Skip the fried egg-topped asparagus Milanese that’s served in a hot cast-iron pan that may have been the cause of it being overcooked ($11), in addition it was in need of seasoning, even just salt and pepper. The hearty portion of pasta bolognese was available regular or gluten-free pasta, $18). What I would recommend is their unusual squid ink pasta tossed with veggies, rock shrimp and diced chorizo ($18).
Since we were celebrating a birthday, we decided on the second bottle of wine plus something to hold a candle. An order of a soft serve ice cream with salted chopped marcona almonds hit the spot ($9).
Our evening ended with us laughing and enjoying each other’s company when the hostess (yes, the hostess) began sweeping around our table — her not so subtle way of letting us know she wanted us to leave. Oddly, we had not overstayed the restaurant’s posted hours.
Although we got a few laughs out of it, the hostess rudeness – and our hodgepodge service throughout left a bad taste in our mouths. That and we weren’t blown away by anything but the bill. Tarry Lodge is in New Haven with almost NY prices.
