Bonnie: In general, I’ve never really been a fan of “pod” single-cup beverage machines for many reasons. For some (Senseo), the resulting coffee is too weak and watery for me, where you almost see the bottom of the cup.
My one exception was my Nespresso machine that always makes a good cup of espresso. Its pods — that look like a foil-sealed, half-and-half creamer found in diners — are well sealed, keeping the coffee fresh. And, the maker of the brew controls the amount of liquid in the cup, and thus the strength.
And now there’s another good single-cup brewer: Tassimo, but only with their new Starbucks T-discs.
I must, though, first back up to May 2005 when at FMI (the supermarket industry convention) Pat Riso (then a Kraft spokesperson) demonstrated their new beverage-making machine to me. According to Pat, you could “experience your own coffeehouse at home with Tassimo, the first one-cup, on-demand, appliance to prepare beverages with the touch of button.”
Tassimo, in fact, was a pretty smart machine. It read the barcode on their “pods” (disposable T-discs) and then knew the right temperature and amount of water to brew either cappuccino, espresso, latte, hot chocolate, coffee or tea.
The proof would, of course, be in the results. Pat dutifully brewed me a cup of coffee.
“It’s weak,” I said.
She reached for another disc and tried again.
“Still weak.”
Again she tried, stopping the water flow manually to make a stronger cup.
I shook my head. I was not at all impressed.
“Great concept,” I said to her, “that is, if the machine would only brew a decent cup of coffee.”
A few months later I received an email from her explaining that the system was so new in the U.S. that “we were sampling an early test version of the product and that the amount of coffee in the discs was not right. The final product will absolutely be much stronger than what you tasted.”
Trying to be fair to the coffee and the machine, I tried it again. It was much better, but still not a cup of coffee that I’d drink. Yes, I am that fussy about my brew. And then I received samples of these new Starbucks T-discs.
Before testing the Africa Kitamu (which turned out to be my favorite), I brewed and enjoyed my morning coffee. Didn’t want that ritual ruined by bad java.
Not only was the coffee delicious, it was a full mug full, not a half cup like most of their other discs brewed. If I closed my eyes while sipping I could imagine sitting in Starbucks drinking coffee, only my coffee cost under a buck.
So funny, that I must share. In researching to write this Bite, I found an old Supermarket Sampler column (1.09.05) where I pleaded to Maxwell House-coffee maker Kraft, “You also distribute Starbucks coffee to supermarkets. How about Starbucks coffee pods for strong-coffee lovers like me?”
That plea was for their Maxwell House Cafe Collection for pod machines, long before Kraft joined forces with Braun to make Tassimo. But I’m still glad they were listening.
Bryan: Do any of you remember those drug commercials from the 80’s: “I learned it by watching you, Dad!” I learned much from this ad and tactfully avoided my mother’s vicious coffee addiction. Bonnie needs a full pot of strong brew to get going in the morning. This fact was driven home to me on a trip to Brussels long ago. Staying at my aunt’s home, we woke to breakfast and coffee in the mornings. For the first two days Bonnie felt terrible, thinking it was prolonged jet lag, before realizing that Aunt Meredith bizarrely brewed decaf. A quick POT of real coffee later an addiction was quelled, Bonnie was better and I vowed never to need coffee in that way.
While not crazily drawn to the beverage, I actually do enjoy coffee, a divine drink when properly brewed and served. I have mixed feelings about the “pod” style brewing machines. On one hand, I would never brew a whole pot just for myself, so the ability to have a single cup of quality coffee is a really great thing. The problem for me is always that I run out of the pods and inevitably can’t find them or forget to buy them. The Tassimo machine and the Starbucks pods really do make a great cup of joe. When the Starbucks pods just showed up at my door without me having to go anywhere, I thought “now this is how it should be done, maybe I can get used to pods (please just keep sending them to my door!). Any coffee that’s gotten the Bonnie seal of approval is truly ready for any level aficionado, but I’ll let you know, as a casual enjoyer (I enjoy coffee best after dinner, with dessert).. these are really great. Since Bonnie somehow got her request fulfilled, and Maxwell House finally began distributing Starbucks pods, I have a request from my girlfriend to please release Starbucks soy chai pods. Well, I’ve asked. In the meantime, everyone should enjoy these treats.
Eric: I nearly laughed out loud after reading my brother’s recollection of our trip to Brussels and the withdrawal my mother went through with her “decaf episode.” It is amazing that coffee is not considered a soft drug or, for that matter, that caffeine itself is not recognized as just as an addictive substance as nicotine. Working in the hospitality industry you start to depend on coffee not just as a drink after dessert, but as a start to the morning and a pick-me-up in the afternoon. Fortunately, for myself, I can control the addiction and, unlike my mother, I can survive a day or two without the brew. One of the funnier things I think about when writing about a single-serving coffee machine being sold in the US is the fact that US coffee consumers probably don’t even know what a single serving of coffee looks like; most of the time a small coffee sold anywhere in the US comes close to nearly a pint of coffee….
Nonetheless, Tassimo/Starbucks has done a good thing; they’ve taken an idea brought mainstream by the Senseo product and enhanced it to offer a tasteful cup of coffee that most Europeans would find appealing. And, as my brother pointed out, if my mother has jeopardized one of her mornings for this coffee and has actually chosen to write about it as one of her preferred products, then take our words to heart; it is something worth trying.
Hello, Barbara,
Thanks so much for your kind comments about Tassimo and for your interest in a broader selection of decaffeinated items. I wish I could tell you we can satisfy your wishes right now, but I can’t. I can promise, though, that I’ll pass your comments on to the brand.
In the meantime, I hope you continue to enjoy all the other great choices from Tassimo!
Bridget MacConnell for Tassimo
The Tassimo is a great unit…one of the best purchases we have made in a long time! However, they really need a decent decaf…please please Starbucks make a decaf for this machine!
I have tried Gevalia, Carte Noir, & Lorenzo espresso and neither taste the same as the Starbucks espresso that comes w/cream in the Cappucino and Latte. I would like to buy just the Starbucks espresso by itself w/o the cream combination package. Does it exist?
Hi, MJ, Thanks for your question about purchasing Starbucks espresso alone. We don’t currently sell Starbucks espresso by itself but, like the other requests that our consumers make, I’m passing your suggestion on to the Tassimo brand folks.
I hope you continue to enjoy Tassimo!
Bridget MacConnell
I am researching which single brew coffee machine to buy. I love Starbucks coffee but I need decaf. When will you be able to provide your consumers with a Starbucks decaf? After reading the reviews on here about the other decaf T-Discs you offer I am considering buying a different machine that has more of a variety of coffee. The pod type coffee makers would allow me to make my own pods with the Starbucks coffee beans I use now in my drip coffee maker. Please please Starbucks make a decaf for this coffee machine!!
DJ…the Keurig does allow you to make you own pods, but don’t expect them to taste very good. I tried that method with the Keurig when I owned one and was not impressed. Now, the premade Keurig decaf K-cups are fine…better than any of the decaf options currently for the Tassimo, however I would also say that the Tassimo Starbucks T-discs are better than any K-cup that I tried. They might have better ones now. They really need to make Starbucks decaf T-discs though, as well as Starbucks Espresso.
Starbucks Mocha Latte fans…I saw at Starbucks recently that they sell the mocha powder at Starbucks which you can then combine with a latte at home out of the Tassimo to make a Starbucks Mocha. I am looking forward to trying that out.
Thank you for your interest in the Tassimo brewing system. We love getting feedback from current and potential consumers about product ideas. Unfortunately, we are currently not offering a Starbucks decaffeinated variety in our T DISCs. We will certainly pass on your feedback to our product development team for consideration. In the meantime, we hope you will enjoy the more than 50 delicious varieties of beverages for the Tassimo brewing system.
Sincerely,
The Tassimo team at Kraft Foods
Looking to find a “skinny latte” t-disc for my Tassimo. Any idea if this is in the works?

If you like to “taste” your coffee the Tassimo Starbucks option is the ONLY way to go. It is the best tasting coffee from any of the single cup machines out there hands down! Part of the reason is that the Starbucks T-Disc’s are double the size of all the other Tassimo brands…so double the coffee = double the flavor. The other brands taste like coffee flavored water with a hint of tin. Yuck! They really need a Starbucks decaf.
If you are on the fence about what machine to buy just keep in mind that other machines (Keurig) may seem to have a larger variety of coffees but it really doesn’t matter if they all taste like crap. If you are cool with mild gas station/hotel lobby coffee then you’ll be fine with any machine but if you like the good stuff there is only one option for you… the Tassimo w/Starbucks pods!
Just ordered my Bosch Tassimo and am awaiting its arrival. I’m super excited about this machine! I am an avid decaf drinker, and have to say that I can’t wait to see a Starbucks decaf T-disc offered, and also a Starbucks decaf latte or cappuccino T-discs. Maybe Tassimo is worried that the other brands that carry decaf will lose their customers to Starbucks?
There is definitely a demand for better, stronger decaf coffee. It doesn’t necessarily have to be Starbucks either. Why is Tassimo not listening to their consumers and meeting the market demand?
I was so excited when I got my Tassimo – as my husband doesn’t drink coffee and I love a strong cup a coffee. At the time I hadn’t realized just how limited decaf options were to be found. I find myself dragging out the drip coffee maker more often than not. The two decaf’s currently available Maxwell House and Gevalia Signature just don’t cut it. The best I have found is making my own version of a Cafe Americana – Decaf espresso T-disc from the cappuccino line and then adding more hot water. What a waste… Please, please add my name to the list of those waiting for another Decaf option.
OK, Kraft folks. This thread goes back for 2 years. Is there ever going to be a Starbucks (or other high-quality) decaf for Tassimo? If not, then tell us and any other decaf lovers who are trying to decide which single cup brewer to buy.
I am in strong agreement with Barbara K. The question about a Starbucks decaf disc has been responsed to with platitudes for the past 2 years. Please make a commitment one way or the other so that we can decide if we’re going to stay with the very convenient Tassimo or move on to another product that may be less convenient but carries the coffees we want.
Agree with Ken. Tassimo needs a Starbucks decaf! Hey Tassimo team, are you listening?
Jean, Ken, Barbara and all our wonderful Tassimo consumers — We ARE listening and we really are working on it. Creating a decaf that will satisfy the highly developed tastes of true Starbucks fans is not an easy task. And, since Tassimo stands for “perfect cup,” we need to devote the time required to succeed. Please do hang in there!
Announcement to all you Tassimo-Starbucks lovers.. (No, not the de-caff we all want but… ) That you can take a chance to win a Tassimo Home Brewing System Prize Package in our Freebie section. In fact you have five chances a month to do so. Check it out.
I purchased a Bosch Tassimo back in December and overall I like the machine. Finding coffee (that I like) has been a challenge ranging from under par brands and unavailable, spending weeks waiting for the few I do like. I too would like to see Starbucks Espresso t-discs offered by themselves. Carte Noir and Mastro Lorenzo espressos are quite good – finding them is another story. Add Starbucks cafe verona and that completes my small list of acceptable t-disc options. MyTassimo customer service needs to be addressed as well. I’ve stopped using them due to frustration. I’m hopeful Tassimo and Kraft can step things up a notch. I’m not giving up yet but I am disappointed so far. Come on guys, it’s time to step up the game and show your customers there is indeed a reason to believe in you and your products.
Our Tassimo is getting relegated to a shelf in the garage. Without a decent decaf, (and we have tried them all) we just don’t use it.
We will bring it out of retirement when Starbucks decaf is available, or put it out at the next garage sale.
Starbucks makes good decaf, we drink it every day. Why is it so difficult to put it into t-disks?
Got the Tassimo and love it, but why no Starbucks Decaf? Seems like the biggest no brainer and clearly people all over the web are asking/demanding for it.
I just won this from BiteoftheBest.com!!! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!! I can’t wait for this to arrive!!! Bye bye sad little coffee pot, hello sweet new coffee for one maker!
THANK YOU BITEOFTHEBEST.COM!!! Not only is your site wonderful & informative but it’s generous too! 🙂
I would love to see you offer Starbucks soy latte t-dics or just offer Starbucks Espresso t-discs themselves so I can make my own soy latte….
There is a demonstrated need for Starbucks Decaf for the Tassimo (or another high quality Decaf). Postings on this thread go back 2 1/2 years, the number of requests for Starbucks Decaf are proof of that need. Tassimo representatives please give a time line or explain why you can’t provide a Starbucks Decaf for the Tassimo system.
Just want to add to the list of pleas for a Starbucks decaf. It’s kind of hard to understand why it takes so long for Tassimo & Starbucks to respond. As Justin said, this thread goes back 2 1/2 years. That’s a long time, folks!
We bought our Tassimo because of the ability to make Starbucks lattes on it. If it weren’t for that one “edge” that Tassimo had over the Keurig, the Keurig would have been what we purchased instead. Keurig certainly offers more variety, is more readily available locally, seems to be more popular, & apparently listens to their customers who want a choice of a bold decaf or a good decaf espresso. If the Keurig would add lattes, I’d switch in a heartbeat & stop waiting for Tassimo to listen. Might have to do that anyway.
Because of recent health issues, my husband can’t have caffeine. He goes to my parents’ house daily to get a cup of bold decaf from their Keurig. It’s delicious! He’s starting to regret the Tassimo purchase & is leaning towards replacing it with a Keurig so that we can get what we want without having to wait for the company to hear the public’s voices enough to respond. Keurig figured out how to give their customers what they wanted a long time ago, & they have their ever-growing popularity to show for it.
The Tassimo is a great machine, especially since Starbucks lattes are available for it. I’m the latte drinker in the house, but I need to drink decaf most of the time, too (the Gevalia decaf espresso doesn’t even resemble espresso)…so our machine is collecting dust. Very frustrating.
Since June of 2008 (yes, over 2 years!) there have been 84 mentions of “decaf” (from the 74 posts to this thread). It’s either us saying how bad (essentially non-existent) the decaf offerings are (most pleading for a Starbucks decaf) or the Kraft folks providing “just wait” comments. For me, the waiting time is over. Time to move on.
I, for one, am tired of waiting for decent decaf. Look for my comments on the Keurig thread from now on.
Barbara K: I sympathize with you, but Kuerig coffee makers break and break and break. I just went through another ordeal with Cuisinart. There is nothing worse than getting up in the morning and putting a K cup in the machine and standing there while nothing comes out. That’s why I have a tassimo.
James
I, too, have read through the posts and after two years of “thanks for your interest in decaf pods, and we will certainly consider the options”, it’s time to do something about it. Starbucks and Seattle’s Best make the best coffee pods and it shouldn’t be too difficult for them to come up with a decaf product. To Tassimo and Kraft — listen to your customers!
Touché!!
I would love love love if Tassimo had a ice tea (sweet would be best) T-disk!!!!
The last time I commented here was in August, but we’ve given the whole subject of having (or in Tassimo’s case — NOT having) a stronger/bold decaf a lot of thought.
Since my husband could no longer use our Tassimo to get any coffee that he enjoyed because of health issues requiring him to switch to decaf, we checked and found out that the store we purchased our Tassimo from would take our Tassimo back & give us a Keurig for it. I loved the Tassimo lattes, but the machine just wasn’t worth it to us without a good decaf option, so we returned ours about a month ago.
GREAT move!
For the past several weeks we’ve been enjoying bold decaf again in our household & LOVING it! Keurig has so much more to offer for us that I find I’m just not missing the Tassimo lattes as I thought I would. Plus, with everyone in the household being able to enjoy coffee at home every day again, it’s just a win-win situation for us.
I wish that the Tassimo/Kraft people had chosen to listen to their customers when people started asking for a bolder or Starbucks decaf…but now that I’ve switched machines, my only “looking back” is to feel sorry for those who are still waiting for their voices to be heard.
It’s nice to be enjoying good coffee here again!
Ohhh…& I forgot to mention above: My new Keurig comes with a k-cup filter that I can fill with all the Starbucks decaf I want — nice & neat & easy in a little compartment on the side of my machine! I haven’t gotten any Starbucks yet since I’ve been enjoying the bold decaf pre-filled K-cup options that are available so much, but I don’t have to beg for Starbucks decaf & wait for someone to get around to listening any more!
Why did it take me so long to switch? Lol!
We also want to put in our request for a Starbuck’s decaf. The ones currently made for this machine are too weak.
Since I am not a Starbucks fan, my comment might not count and that’s o.k. with me. But I am a HUGE Tassimo fan (have had my machine now since last winter) and truly enjoy the fact that I can buy so many of my favorite European coffees (Jacobs, Maestro Lorenzo, etc.) directly on-line from Tassimo (no shipping fee)that are not availabe in American supermarkets. I do not enjoy Gevalia much since, as stated above, it is rather weak. Starbucks coffee does not agree with me, there might be something in their roasting process(es) that is difficult for me. But the Tassimo idea is great. Latte Machiato, Cappuchino, a quick espresso, even the availability of Milka Hot Chocolate – what a FAB idea! Thank you, Tassimo.
To Jill: We’re sorry to lose you as a consumer but wish you the best.
For P&J: We appreciate your ideas and interest in Tassimo and will share your comments with the business team. We really are always looking for consumer feedback and ways to make the Tassimo Single Cup Beverage System more enjoyable for our consumers.
To Hildegunde: We’re delighted you’re a Tassimo fan and very pleased you explored our website and found just the right coffee and other beverage selections to satisfy your tastes.
It’s a few days old but already I know I will never be without my Tassimo! That is not to say I won’t still spend far too much at Starbucks.. or other coffee-house style shops, but this truly is a fantastic invention.
I do however sincerely hope Tassimo will create a reusable T-Disc so we can, on occasion make our own coffee or espresso. I didn’t see anything on this post related to it, but found countless other forums where this feature – one available on the competition’s brewer (Keurig)is the most common reason for not buying the Tassimo.

Our tassimo was a christmas gift, picked up the pods last night , hot chocolate latte and cap ( all nabob) wayyyyy toooo weakkkkk !!!!! Will try starbucks ,hope it is an improvement.
Starbucks is the only coffee worth drinking on the Tassimo and it is 1000% better! Hope you don’t need decaf though…I have to use the Maxwell House and I pull my cup out when it is 1/3 filled just so I can taste it.
I would love to see a reuseable t-disc option. Also, I wish they would come out with a Soy dic!
We used to have the Keurig and loved the Paul Newmans brand. It would be soooo great if you could have that coffee for Tassimo as well!
Yet another vote for Starbucks Decaf. Got my T65 for Christmas – love it. This week I found I have a heart rhythm issue, and can’t have caffeine. Gevalia decaf is too mild. Love Tassimo, love Starbucks, love coffee.
Thanks for listening Tassimo – could sure use a hand with this.
I love Starbucks as well, but just read something about them leaving Tassimo?
from all the news reports online there certainly seems to be trouble in Shangri-La!
… Now I understand why all our pleas for decaff went unanswered….
Just sharing an update that Starbucks confirmed to the Chicago Tribune that it plans to introduce their own pods for single-serve coffee machines…It’s unclear whether Starbucks will make its own machines or utilize a manufacture. Perhaps a Starbucks decaff will soon be available. Stay tuned.
Just heard that Starbucks has a new deal with Keurig which means no more Starbucks on Tassimo! Bye bye Tassimo. At least I got a couple of years use out of mine.
I shall remain your loyal customer, Tassimo, as long as you carry European coffees. Starbucks gets no stars from me.
So glad we took our Tassimo back months ago to get a Keurig! Now maybe we’ll get our Starbucks decaf in K-cups…but we’ve already been enjoying Starbucks decaf by buying the coffee & filling our k-cup filter when we aren’t in a big hurry. When we’re in a hurry we use the French Roast decaf by Green Mountain & love it, too. So glad Starbucks will be joining us in K-cup form. I’d love it if they’d do a latte for Keurig like they did for Tassimo. Yum!
I do not understand this passion for Starbucks coffee. I do not drink Starbucks coffee is their coffe shops and I will certainly not purchase this device.
There are other types of high-quality delicious coffee than you can make at home using macchinetta. Much more delicious and much cheaper…
I agree with the previous poster – the obsession with Starbucks in this country is a mystery to me. My home is in Europe and travelling extensively there I’ve mostly found fairly good coffee everywhere. Starbucks makes strong coffee, but strength does not ALWAYS equal QUALITY. A tiny cup of coffee, well-brewed with good water (very important) is a delight, but those mega-sized cups and weird coffee concoctions are an assault on one’s palate. Again, only a personal opinion and granting everyone his/her own take on Starbucks. I am not a professional coffee taster.
This Starbucks news will be the end of Tassimo!!! Without them, Tassimo has nothing on Keurig. Sure you can order some European brands that are supposed to be decent online. But seriously, it’s not practical for daily drinkers to have to order online. I want to buy mine at Target or Bed Bath Beyond when I’m in a pinch etc. All they offer is Maxwell House and Gevalia which are both terrible in my opinion. This is a real bummer. : (
