Bonnie: In general, I’ve never really been a fan of “pod” single-cup beverage machines for many reasons. For some (Senseo), the resulting coffee is too weak and watery for me, where you almost see the bottom of the cup.
My one exception was my Nespresso machine that always makes a good cup of espresso. Its pods — that look like a foil-sealed, half-and-half creamer found in diners — are well sealed, keeping the coffee fresh. And, the maker of the brew controls the amount of liquid in the cup, and thus the strength.
And now there’s another good single-cup brewer: Tassimo, but only with their new Starbucks T-discs.
I must, though, first back up to May 2005 when at FMI (the supermarket industry convention) Pat Riso (then a Kraft spokesperson) demonstrated their new beverage-making machine to me. According to Pat, you could “experience your own coffeehouse at home with Tassimo, the first one-cup, on-demand, appliance to prepare beverages with the touch of button.”
Tassimo, in fact, was a pretty smart machine. It read the barcode on their “pods” (disposable T-discs) and then knew the right temperature and amount of water to brew either cappuccino, espresso, latte, hot chocolate, coffee or tea.
The proof would, of course, be in the results. Pat dutifully brewed me a cup of coffee.
“It’s weak,” I said.
She reached for another disc and tried again.
“Still weak.”
Again she tried, stopping the water flow manually to make a stronger cup.
I shook my head. I was not at all impressed.
“Great concept,” I said to her, “that is, if the machine would only brew a decent cup of coffee.”
A few months later I received an email from her explaining that the system was so new in the U.S. that “we were sampling an early test version of the product and that the amount of coffee in the discs was not right. The final product will absolutely be much stronger than what you tasted.”
Trying to be fair to the coffee and the machine, I tried it again. It was much better, but still not a cup of coffee that I’d drink. Yes, I am that fussy about my brew. And then I received samples of these new Starbucks T-discs.
Before testing the Africa Kitamu (which turned out to be my favorite), I brewed and enjoyed my morning coffee. Didn’t want that ritual ruined by bad java.
Not only was the coffee delicious, it was a full mug full, not a half cup like most of their other discs brewed. If I closed my eyes while sipping I could imagine sitting in Starbucks drinking coffee, only my coffee cost under a buck.
So funny, that I must share. In researching to write this Bite, I found an old Supermarket Sampler column (1.09.05) where I pleaded to Maxwell House-coffee maker Kraft, “You also distribute Starbucks coffee to supermarkets. How about Starbucks coffee pods for strong-coffee lovers like me?”
That plea was for their Maxwell House Cafe Collection for pod machines, long before Kraft joined forces with Braun to make Tassimo. But I’m still glad they were listening.
Bryan: Do any of you remember those drug commercials from the 80’s: “I learned it by watching you, Dad!” I learned much from this ad and tactfully avoided my mother’s vicious coffee addiction. Bonnie needs a full pot of strong brew to get going in the morning. This fact was driven home to me on a trip to Brussels long ago. Staying at my aunt’s home, we woke to breakfast and coffee in the mornings. For the first two days Bonnie felt terrible, thinking it was prolonged jet lag, before realizing that Aunt Meredith bizarrely brewed decaf. A quick POT of real coffee later an addiction was quelled, Bonnie was better and I vowed never to need coffee in that way.
While not crazily drawn to the beverage, I actually do enjoy coffee, a divine drink when properly brewed and served. I have mixed feelings about the “pod” style brewing machines. On one hand, I would never brew a whole pot just for myself, so the ability to have a single cup of quality coffee is a really great thing. The problem for me is always that I run out of the pods and inevitably can’t find them or forget to buy them. The Tassimo machine and the Starbucks pods really do make a great cup of joe. When the Starbucks pods just showed up at my door without me having to go anywhere, I thought “now this is how it should be done, maybe I can get used to pods (please just keep sending them to my door!). Any coffee that’s gotten the Bonnie seal of approval is truly ready for any level aficionado, but I’ll let you know, as a casual enjoyer (I enjoy coffee best after dinner, with dessert).. these are really great. Since Bonnie somehow got her request fulfilled, and Maxwell House finally began distributing Starbucks pods, I have a request from my girlfriend to please release Starbucks soy chai pods. Well, I’ve asked. In the meantime, everyone should enjoy these treats.
Eric: I nearly laughed out loud after reading my brother’s recollection of our trip to Brussels and the withdrawal my mother went through with her “decaf episode.” It is amazing that coffee is not considered a soft drug or, for that matter, that caffeine itself is not recognized as just as an addictive substance as nicotine. Working in the hospitality industry you start to depend on coffee not just as a drink after dessert, but as a start to the morning and a pick-me-up in the afternoon. Fortunately, for myself, I can control the addiction and, unlike my mother, I can survive a day or two without the brew. One of the funnier things I think about when writing about a single-serving coffee machine being sold in the US is the fact that US coffee consumers probably don’t even know what a single serving of coffee looks like; most of the time a small coffee sold anywhere in the US comes close to nearly a pint of coffee….
Nonetheless, Tassimo/Starbucks has done a good thing; they’ve taken an idea brought mainstream by the Senseo product and enhanced it to offer a tasteful cup of coffee that most Europeans would find appealing. And, as my brother pointed out, if my mother has jeopardized one of her mornings for this coffee and has actually chosen to write about it as one of her preferred products, then take our words to heart; it is something worth trying.
I’m with Aunt Meredith…humans need caffine like
fish need bicycles!
$8-10 for 12 cups of coffee? Considering that the tassimo makes a consistent cup of coffee and that it is Starbucks, I might be able to justify the convenience.
Sounds like a great idea, but will it brew a single skinny latte with whole milk foam? Until then, I will have to continue to feed my $3.87 daily caffeine addiction with a 6 AM visit to our local Starbucks.
Barbara, Tassimo does offer both espresso and milk (Cappucino Creamer) T-discs so you can easily make a Latte similar to — but not exactly like — your skinny latte with whole milk foam. ….And you’ll be able to enjoy that at home and save a couple of bucks a day. (I also asked the folks at Tassimo/Starbucks to respond as they might be able to provide even more info.) Stay tuned.
Aunt Meredith wants me to share that she wasn’t serving decaf coffee — instead she was serving 70% decaf, a coffee from her local Delhaize supermarket in Brussels.

[…] Starbucks Coffee for Tassimo […]
I love the taste of coffee, but can’t have caffeine. The Gevalia decaf just doesn’t taste good enough. If Starbucks put out a good tasting decaf in Tassimo Pods I think it would do very well.
I so agree with you! I also would like to Starbucks them add a 50/50 (decaff/caffeine) one to their line.
I heard there were new starbucks T-discs meade for tassimo. I also heard this new product was being tested in retail stores? Target maybe? Do you know anything about testing a new Starbucks T disc at retailers? Or do you know where I can buy this product at retail?
Thanks-
-Pamela
There’s a new Starbucks Colombia coffee T DISC, which – along with the other four Starbucks coffee varieties – House Blend, Breakfast Blend, Africa Kitamu and Caffe Verona – are available in a number of retail outlets. They include Bed, Bath & Beyond, Target, Linens ‘n Things, Sears, Macy’s and online at Tassimodirect.com, Amazon and coffeewhiz.com.
The testing that this reader mentions could be demonstrations of the new Tassimo brewer by Bosch that representatives will be conducting on weekends through the fourth quarter in a number of retail outlets, including Bed, Bath & Beyond, Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s.
Any idea if Startbucks or Seattles Best will be making a decaf for the Tassimo?
While Kraft does not currently have plans to offer a decaffeinated version of Starbucks or Seattle’s Best Coffee for the Tassimo hot beverage system, it’s certainly something to consider since we are always working to satisfy consumer needs.
Hello BM from Kraft, I’d love to see Starbucks espresso t-discs so I could make my soy latte. Any timeframe for adding espresso and soy? Thanks!
Thanks so much for your suggestion. We’re always looking for new ways to delight our Tassimo users and will look into your idea.
Happy President’s Day!

Hi BM
We need Starbucks Sumatra, I am willing to pay way over what I can get it in whole bean but none of the Brands have Sumatra, while K Kup has tons
I’m checking with the brand folks about this and will get back to you.
Can anyone tell me where to buy the pods in a store. My dad is hooked on them. My local starbucks, kroger, walmart and target do not carry them. I see them online but don’t want to pay for shipping on top of the coffee.
Mary, to be able to get the manufacturer to assist you, please let us know your zipcode! thanks.
Dear ‘Bite of the Best’ Reader,
We’re delighted to learn you’re a fan of the STARBUCKS T Discs for the
TASSIMO hot beverage system. You should be able to find them in your
local Bed, Bath & Beyond store, or you can become a member of the
TASSIMO direct program at http://www.tassimo.com As a member, as long as you
spend at least $30 per order, you will get free shipping. There are no
commitments with membership and you can leave the program any time you
wish. Free shipping also is available for any one-time online orders of
$50 or more.
I love my new Tassimo, but I prefer to drink decaf coffee and just can’t find any in our retail stores.
The Starbucks pods are wonderful, and really, Starbucks is the only decaf I enjoy. I’m curious why there are no plans to add this product?
If I can find the decaf pods, I will certainly give them a try, but for now ,I am seriously thinking of going over to the Keurig system, as they have plenty of decaf options.
I have the same problem with finding decaf for Tassimo. The only one I’ve found is the Gevalia decaf at Bed Bath and Beyond. It is a mild variety, not my favorite, but it does the job.
I’ve checked with the Tassimo marketers about additional decaffeinated coffees. I’ve been told Gevalia and Maxwell House brands are the only two decaffeinated coffees available in T Disc form.
I’d like to add my voice in favour of lobbying to get a Starbucks decaf in the T-disc format. I’ve tried both the Gevalia and the Maxwell house and they just don’t cut it.
Please, please, please Starbucks Espresso pods for Tassimo! They would save me a fortune at Starbucks. Once you’ve had a Starbucks Soy Latte you just can’t use one of the other espresso pods.
While we don’t currently have either a Starbucks decaffeinated or espresso option for the Tassimo brewer, we’re always looking for new ways to delight our consumers, so we’ll certainly look into the possibility of offering these.
Will Canadians ever be able to order the Seattles Best?
“While we won’t say never, currently, we do not have the license to
offer Seattles Best in Canada.”
Gang – this whole decaf/starbucks/favorite flavor thing is EASILY fixed…at least for me.
we still use the pods, dont get me wrong…but I also got a flat-bottomed reusable filter – put 2-3 tablespoons of your favorite grounds in the filter, put the filter in a small glass dish, and use the “cleaning disc” to throw enough hot water to make a full cup…and let it “brew” for as long as you like your coffee to be strong.
then, remove the filter and let it drip through, pour the coffee into a mug, and bam – there is your desired cup/taste/amount/etc etc….
just a thought –
I just purchased the Bosch Tassimo and tried the Starbucks T-disc. Wow is all I have to say about this!! I had a Keurig machine for a while and the coffee was never hot enough after adding some milk. Also, all of the varieties had some similar taste to them. The Tassimo makes a BLAZING hot cup that will easily stand up to as much refrigerated milk or cream that you would want. The Starbucks coffee…simply amazing. By far and wide the best coffee I have ever made at home. I will add that I also bought several Gevalia T-disc varieties, and I am not impressed with any of them. Too weak and tastes like office coffee. I am looking forward to trying some of the other brands like Seattle’s Best, since the Starbucks is a lot more expensive than the other T-discs. However, if you want Starbucks at home, this makes a better cup than my drip machine did using freshly-ground beans. Kraft…are you listening? Give us Espresso T-discs please so we can make lattes at home…you will make a killing!!
Tassimo has both espresso and latte T-discs…and they’re available at amazon.com
Dear Pete C,
It’s great to hear you’re pleased with your new Tassimo by Bosch. We agree it’s a pretty amazing brewer. As Bonnie mentions, we do offer an espresso selection in T Disc form. In addition to Gevalia, there’s also Carte Noire (a French coffee brand) and Mastro Lorenzo (from Italy).
If you can’t find all of them where you purchased your brewer, you also can try our website — http://www.tassimo.com
And, please, keep telling us what you’d like for Tassimo – we want to continue delighting you.
Bridget MacConnell for Tassimo
Sorry, I guess I was not clear. I was aware of the ability to make Gevalia lattes at home, however I was saying that if they had a way to make a Starbucks latte at home it would make a killing. For that, Starbucks espresso would be needed. Not sure if Starbucks would be willing to put their name on that though since the Tassimo might not be able to produce espresso the way Starbucks would. I tried the Gevalia espresso and it is nice, so I assume the lattes are very good. I spoke too soon on the Gevalia because the Decaf was just awful.
The answer is simple but VERY IMPORTANT. At home I have had a Keurig machine for a couple of years. For my office I recently, I ordered a Tassimo just for variety, and it has the same problem the Keurig initially had weak coffee!
Keurig solved this by putting out a line of EXTRA BOLD cups. These cups have more coffee than the regular cups. Currently, the Keurig tastes better to me, because the Tassimo makes weak coffee. I performed an additional test yesterday. I made a cup of Keurig and a cup of Tassimo in identical glass see through mugs. The Tassimo was noticably lighter weaker. In otherwords, the Tassimo was clearer and lighter brown due to being weaker in accord with my taste test. The Keurig was much darker and stronger as I guessed it would be.
I will buy and try Starbucks today, but for me to love my Tassimo like I love my Keurig, they have to put out a line of extra bold cups. As Keurig does, these cups have to be Sumatra, expresso and other flavors. Just a little more coffee per cup will do it. Then we all will have great machines.
James
We do suggest you try the Africa Kitamu. We found it to make a bold rich cup of coffee!
James, it is apparent from your post that you have not seen a Starbucks T-disc yet! 🙂 They are twice the size of a normal T-disc!! They produce a richer and more flavorful cup of coffee than any K-cup I have ever tried. I like all of the Starbucks varieties…even the two medium blends are very rich and flavorful. I agree that the normal T-disc produces much weaker coffee.
AMAZING…Starbucks is coming out with Latte Primo and Cappuccino Primo for Tassimo!! The products are already over at Amazon set for release this month!!!
Could a Kraft representative please address the question of why no Starbucks T-disc decaffeinated coffee is offered? I was going to order the Bosch but have decided against it unless/until a decaf T-disc is available. It seems like such an obviously good idea, since one advantage of the single cup system is to please both decaf and caf coffee drinkers, and most people have a strong preference for the Starbucks brand. Are there legal arrangements that preclude Kraft from selling decaf Starbucks?
Janet, I SO agree with you. Why can’t they make a nice, strong, bold Starbucks decaf T-disk?
There is a huge VOID for all of us who prefer a bold decaf. I have tried the Maxwell House blend and can only drink it if I brew it with an expresso size amount of water.
Starbucks – You say on this board many times that you are “looking at new ways to delight your customers”.
Well, I will be over the moon when I can buy decaf Starbucks for my Tassimo.
Thanks so much for your comments about the Tassimo beverage system. We really do try to delight our consumers and will look into offering more choices in decaffeinated coffees. In the meantime, there are decaf selections from both Gevalia and Maxwell House Café. And, happy holidays from Tassimo!
Hello! Desperately trying to find a machine that will make a particular Starbucks drink for my husband, the Quad Venti Soy Mocha. I believe it is in the espresso category. If I get the Tassimo beverage system & use the Starbucks T-Discs, what I could add if anything to achieve the taste of his favorite drink?
Any comments or suggestions would be welcomed.
Thanks,
Diana
Because you are always looking for ways “to satisfy consumer needs” and “looking for new ways to delight,” I also would love to see soy T-discs.
Kim, thanks for the great suggestion! We’re passing it on to our brand folks.
Happy holidays from Tassimo!
When will we see a Starbucks “Skinny Latte” on the Tassimo? This is what I really want!!! The Gevalia Skinny Cappuccino is ok but when you’re used to drinking your daily Skinny Latte (Starbucks) the Gevalia just not the same.
I want to agree with others that a Starbucks decaf T-disk would be very desirable. All we drink is decaf and our favorite is the Starbucks House Blend decaf. Since several other Starbucks coffees are already available in T-disks, it certainly wouldn’t seem to be a big production problem to provide some decaf. Fingers crossed! Out Tassimo won’t get much use without it.
I just bought a Tassimo for my daughter who drinks mostly decaf coffee. Gevalia and Maxwellhouse are too weak. Please please make a Starbucks decaf T-disk…it will certianly be well received.
I may buy one for myself if you offer Starbucks decaf.
Happy New Year from Tassimo! This responds to John P, Steve A and Susan F, who are all looking for expanded offerings. We do hear you and we’re passing your request on to our brand folks.
Please, please, make a good decaf for Tassimo as soon as possible. I cannot stand the Maxwell House decaf and Gevalia is only a little better.
I, too, am begging for a bold cup of decaf. Just because we cannot have caffeine, does not mean we don’t love a good cup of strong coffee. I’m about ready to move to a Senseo where the options are better.
One more voice PLEADING for a decent decaf! I love Kitamu–drink it every morning, and use the Gevalia espresso/cappuchino discs all the time. But I enjoy a cup of decaf in the afternoon, and the Gevalia is weak, and the Maxwell House is wretched. I’m tempted to ask for a Keurig for my birthday.
