We decided on Sant Ambroeus as I had enjoyed a wonderful breakfast at their West Village sister location. That, plus the restaurant is a 3-minute walk from the Met Breuer where we were heading to see thought-provoking Unfinished exhibit.
I requested poached instead of scrambled eggs with the crostino Milanase; my friend asked for egg whites only. Our waiter returned to say they couldn’t offer me poached, if I wanted the toast. Thinking the bread must be an integral part of the presentation, I decided it have it their way. By now I should know never to assume.
We also ordered some fruit salad and their avocado toast sans the poached egg. That fresh lemon-flavored mash atop the sunflower bread was the best thing we ate ($17). My entree consisted of dried-0ut, room temperature scrambled eggs topped with twoparmesan slivers, under-cooked and under-seasoned fingerling potatoes, a few grape tomatoes and a side of toast ($18). Mediocre at best.
When we tried to wave down our server for the check, we realized he had forgotten our fruit salad. Breakfast was a complete miss; the amazing “Unfinished” show a home run.
