Caseus-owner Jason Sobocinski is also one of the owners of ordinary, in the former Richter’s spot on Chapel Street. Jason’s one of this community’s favorite sons — he could have opened up a McDonald’s franchise, and people would have applauded.

Luckily he didn’t. He teamed up a couple of other nice guys and opened ordinary.

So, here’s the quick and dirt …not because it doesn’t deserve more…but because the place itself is simple and direct but yet far from… ordinary.

Think colonial, dark wood, beef and meat pies.

Same layout as Richters – bar in front and seating in back — but woodwork has been completely cleaned and re-finished with expert craftsmanship. They still offer — but don’t push — yards as they feel that it’s one of the worst ways to enjoy a beer.

What they do offer are craft beers, wines by the glass and bottle, and mixed drinks.. I enjoyed a porter, which I had never had – but loved! I will definitely be back to have that again. At 11% alcohol, I was one and done.
If you want vodka and club soda — you’ll get vodka on the rocks and club soda served in a small bottle. Very European.

The menu offers cheese and charcuterie platters ($5 up to $14), Connecticut-made meat pies ($9), pickles & olives ($4) and nuts ($4).

You wouldn’t necessarily go there for dinner — but for a lite bite while you’re enjoying a drink. Although maybe a meat pie is more filling then say having a burger at Shake Shack.

No loud music – so it’s a nice setting to meet, have a drink and talk.
Be sure to check out the historical timeline of the building — by local historian Colin Caplan – going back to early 1800’s ….Back in the day gathering places/taverns were called ordinary. Once you understand that, it seems obvious that that is the best name for the place.

And yes, still have the original moose head – and a portrait of Richter Elser’s grandfather — or whoever the guy is that shot the moose.
Definitely recommend you check it out!
