Nubeluz is from the Spanish words for cloud (nube) and light (luz). It’s the name of the Ritz-Carlton NoMad’s swanky rooftop bar with incredible city views and a unique take on cocktails from José Andrés, who also opened Zaytinya on the ground floor. The bar opened in July at the corner of Broadway and 28th street.

Nubelez tries to keep it mysterious.

The hostess, dressed in a gold lamè short cocktail dress, will have you wait after you’ve stopped at the stand to give your name — even if you have a reservation and the rooftop is not fully committed. It’s how they’ve been trained.

Once the hostess decides to let you in, she walks you to the elevator to send you up to the 50th floor, where another hostess will greet you. Whether or not you have a res, they make you wait. It’s their MO.

Once you arrive, the views will have you grabbing your phone to take photos.

I’ve returned multiple times, bringing visitors, family, and locals to experience Nubeluz. As you’d expect, the drinks and food are pricey.

I’d recommend at least one at your table try the dramatic Foggy Hill presentation. The blend of Del Maguey Vida mezcal, Yzaguirre 1884 Gran Reserva vermouth, Cynar, Aperol and an orange-thyme aromatic cloud is served from a beaker brimming over with dry ice smoke. (When we had that drink about a month ago, it cost $23; last I looked, it’s now $30!)

First time there, we ordered the expensive salmon-roe topped labneh (yogurt) with José’s potato chips with our drinks ($18) as we needed to nibble something. I skipped food on the other visits.

Do make a special trip to Nubeluz to drink in the views at least once. Do it for a special night out or to impress guests.
