In Katonah — at the intersection of route 100 and 35 — is the Muscoot Tavern, a small, oddly shaped, red structure established before 1925. It has had many owners and as many names — Muscoot Inn, the Muscoot Diner, the Muscoot Restaurant, Little Brauhaus. What remains constant is the “Cheers-like” atmosphere of this local hangout.
I was invited recently to sample their extensive menu. While perusing the menu, we sipped our cocktails (Their margies are good!) and nibbled their garlicky bread ($5), both the regular one sprinkled with cheese and a rich pesto-topped version. There were six of us, so we had many mouths to share all the goodies.
Our appetizers included a hearty serving of burrata (cream filled mozzarella) with a fabulous fig jam, prosciutto and roasted red peppers ($12); unusual tasty combo of crispy bacon-wrapped asparagus in a balsamic glaze ($8); P.E.I. mussels Muscoot-style, that’s in a cream sauce ($11); a Caprese salad made with buffalo mozzarella, sliced heirloom tomatoes and fresh basil, drizzled with a balsamic glaze ($14); six buttery clams with lots of garlic, diced bacon and herbs ($9); and seafood stuffed grilled portabella mushrooms with baby spinach ($14) in a delicate wine sauce.
We managed to keep eating, splitting many entrees: a creamy wild local mushroom risotto drizzled with truffle oil ($17); an egg-battered flounder fillet in a white wine, lemon-butter sauce with mashed potatoes and green beans ($24), boneless chicken with ham and provolone smothered in sautéed mushrooms and served with rice and green beans garnished with microgreens ($18); and everyone’s favorite — the BBQ ribs so succulent and tender the meat fell off the bones, served with perfectly cooked fries, a corn muffin and cole slaw ($21). When I returned, I’d have to indulge in both the rib and risotto.
Even with all that food, our group managed to share a few desserts including their creamy bread pudding topped with a Capt Morgan crème anglaise, a mango zabaglione and a crème brulee ($7 each). We capped the evening sipping some after dinner drinks.
Worth the visit.
