None of us had sampled Laotian food before our alfresco lunch at Khe-Yo (that translates into “green”) on Duane Street in Tribeca. The restaurant opened in 2013 as New York’s first Laotian eatery with Marc Forgione as a co-owner/Partner.
I requested their Khe-Yo Mule made with their house Thai Chili infused vodka ($16), one of my friends had the Tequila Blanco with Campari & grapefruit juice ($16). Both quite tasty.
The three of us shared the Berkshire Pork Spring Rolls ($18 for three, cut in thirds), packed with flavorful pork. Little did we know — as our server didn’t inform us — that when we asked for more of the accompanying sauce that we’d be charged $.99 per order. We ordered one extra of the peanut sauce and three of the spicy bang-bang with fresh and dried chilies for our entrees.
We each chose one of the Market Bowls where first we selected a protein and then a choice of one of their four bases — with rice noodles, sticky rice, jasmine rice or veggies. Although the bases were not exactly as the menu described, we enjoyed and would recommend what we received.
For protein, one if our group chose the grilled ginger prawns (5 for $16), another the Berkshire crispy pork belly ($16) and I selected the Creekstone Farms skirt steak (perfectly cooked medium rare and then sliced $15).
The only issue we had with our bowls were the way too large pickled veggies. They would have been easier to eat and would have been fully pickled if they were in smaller chunks.
That said, I’d still recommend a visit!
