An Evening of Science and Senses with Pierre-Jean Sauvion

Usually when I drink wine I contemplate the sensory experience over the science of winemaking.  I focus on the aromas and flavors of the wine and how it pairs with the food I am eating. I reflect on where I am, the company I am keeping and the mood I am in when I drinking my glass or two- my intimate wine occasion. But last month, a small group of writers gathered at Laura Maniec’s delightful Corkbuzz wine bar in Greenwich Village to blend the sensory with science in a hands-on tutorial called “Blending With Pleasure” led by winemaker, Pierre-Jean Sauvion, a fourth generation family member of the Loire Valley’s [...]

Prasad Chirnomula at the James Beard House

Lucky, lucky me.  I got to attend the incredible dinner earlier this month at the James Beard House in New York City (167 W 12th Street) where Prasad Chirnomula — of Thali, Thali Too and Oaxaca fame — prepared a show-stopping meal combining the cuisines of India and Mexico — “Mole to Masala” As they poured Roederer Estate Brut Rosé NV, waiters passed Crispy Pork Belly Tacos (my personal favorite served on a bed of raw corn kernels), Crab and Ginger Samosas, Miniature Chorizo–Buffalo Burgers and Seven-Spice Mushrooms while all the guests mingled. (The Chorizo–Buffalo Burgers were attractively served on a bed of uncooked red lentils. Note to self: remember [...]

El Celler De Can Roca at Mercat NYC

When the invite came for a 12-course celebration of the wines and foods of Catalunya as seen through the eyes of Sommelier Josep Roca and his chef brother Joan Roca, as interpreted by Mercat. I couldn't resist. El Celler De Can Roca — a Catalan restaurant in Girona, Catalonia, Spain operated by the three Roca brothers — was recently voted number-two in the S.Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants rankings produced by the British Restaurant magazine; it has three Michelin stars. I had eaten at Moo, their sister restaurant, located in Barcelona's Hotel Omm, but hadn't made it to El Celler De Can Roca. Remembering that meal's flavors and attention to [...]

Gamay & Golf at Pier 59

Laura Maniec, M.W. An invitation to a night of “Golf and Gamay" certainly stands out in New York City, where industry wine tastings are a dime a dozen daily and there are no golf courses. Sopexa USA organized the evening on behalf of Inter Beaujolais at Chelsea Piers-Pier 59, a very cool “golf club” for city folks who want to practice their putts. Now, I can honestly say my wine knowledge is better than my golf swing, but on I put on my game face for the sake of tasting some great Gamays. The Beaujolais Crus, all made from 100% Gamay grape, are considered the “gems” of the [...]
