Samuel Adams Hallertau Imperial Pilsner – Goodbye Joe Six Pack

Joe the Plumber has been the latest buzzkill term of the never-ending presidential election. Well Samuel Adams thinks both the plumber and Joe Six Pack need a break and an upgrade. Say hello to 'Joe 4-pack'; introducing to the world, the Samuel Adams Hallertau Imperial Pilsner. This specialty brew is only available in 4 packs. If you're thinking that just sounds like two less beers, you're already underestimating the fullness of this Pilsner. Sam Adams uses an enormous amount of only the best hops available, letting Joe’s everywhere give up on having to settle for “average.” If you are a standard 'lite' beer drinker, this is going to be a [...]

Trader Joe’s

We've been receiving questions about Trader Joe's products from our viewers. Since we don't yet have a discussion board or open forum, I decided to post these as a TidBite, so that you — our Bite of the Best family — may comment. If you can assist any of these folks or want to add something to the discussion, please do so. Dave L wrote: "Would like to find out if anyone has found a replacement for Trader Joe's "Red Mexican Sauce" since Trader's decided to stop carrying it, or if it's being sold under a different label somewhere ???A great tasting red sauce, too bad they stopped carrying it... Birds Eye Steamfresh Meals for Two: Update

This summer I told you about Birds Eye's new Steamfresh Meals for Two — entrees that steam in about 10 minutes in the microwave. These dinners are now available in your grocer's freezer. They're also available in Whole Foods supermarkets, which means they contain few, if any, additives. Steamfresh Meals for Two are available as Grilled Chicken Marinara, Shrimp Alfredo, Shrimp Pasta Primavera, Grilled Chicken in Roasted Garlic Sauce and — my two favorites — Asian Style Chicken Vegetable Medley and Sweet and Spicy Chicken.  The two-portion 24-ounce bag costs $7.49.

The Wine Press: The Crush

Impossible to resist. That's how I felt when  Robbin asked if I wanted to join a group of friends to make a barrel of wine at The Wine Press. You see, Robbin had attended a recent open house at this newly opened facility, experienced the fruits of their previous labors (pun intended) and decided to get a group to make some Cabernet Sauvignon from grapes recently harvested in central California. At our first gathering last week, we crushed and de-stemmed our grapes using The Wine Press's equipment. We each emptied one of the twenty-one 36-pound cases of grapes into the machine. From this machine the grapes were pumped into a [...]

Buy Local – Cedar Springs Farm

Buying local is a bit of a new catch phrase for foodies, which is hilarious because only two generations ago most of the world didn't know anything but local food. Along the 'buying local' theme, I recently had my two online worlds collide when I met the owner of one of my newest villa rentals, Caribbean Eden. The gentleman was local and wanted to meet me in person (very rare in my global business). What should have been a 10-minute chat turned into an hour-long conversation about life, travel and food. I came to realize that he had taken up raising organic beef nearby, I was intrigued and read more.. [...]

Too Much Sugar in Kids Cereals, Says Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports just confirmed what I've been saying for years: cereals marketed to children contain way too much sugar. In their first-ever nutrition report published in the November 2008 issue, Consumer Reports says that 23 of the top 27 cereals marketed to children rated only Good or Fair for nutrition because of their sugars. In fact, Consumer Reports found at least as much sugar in a serving of Kellogg’s Honey Smacks (15 grams sugar) and 10 other cereals as in a glazed doughnut from Dunkin’ Donuts. Sugar isn't the only criteria in their ratings: Kellogg’s Rice Krispies has only 4 grams sugar, but received only a Fair rating because of [...]

Calorie Counts to be Added to YUM! Brands Menu Boards

Health-conscious consumers — who frequent some fast food chain restaurants — will soon be aware of the calories that they're consuming. YUM! Brands — parent company to KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and Long John Silver’s — just announced plans to add calorie counts to their menu boards nationwide. Four thousand stores will post the calories on their menu boards now, according to USA Today, all stores will do so by Jan 1, 2011. Fast-food critic Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest issued a release praising YUM! for doing so and saying,  "I never thought I’d say this, but I salute Colonel Sanders!" More Starbucks New Healthy Breakfast Menu

Starbucks launched a new, nutritious breakfast menu this past month. It is definitely true that a good breakfast can be the basis for a healthy eating routine (and weight loss). Many large franchises are finally beginning to cater to the more health conscious, as people more and more come to realize that they really are what they eat. We've seen Dunkin' Donuts launch their Smart 'DD' Menu with egg white flatbread sandwiches and now Starbucks is trying to dissuade you from that chocolate chip cookie with your morning cup. New selections include: baked berry stella (tart), chewy fruit and nut bars,  multigrain rolls w/ assorted spreads (try almond butter or [...]

New Breakfasts at Starbucks

The Starbucks publicist kept reaching out to me, to try their new breakfast offerings being introduced this month. I procrastinated about doing so as I found neither the tiny dark photos on the press release nor their descriptions enticing. And — from my past experience running through airports (my time to frequent Starbucks) — all I could imagine were their high-fat, calorie-laden scones, cakes and muffins. But dutifully, I figured I must.  And I thought, better with a friend and invited Diane to meet me there one morning to taste test their numerous offering. We both were pleasantly surprised, not only by the tasty whole-grain nutritious offerings but by the [...]

Win a Party Planning Session with Preston Bailey (Big Apple Trip Included)

I love rice — in fact my first cookbook had the catchy little title of  "Rice."  I guess that's why this new contest looking for favorite holiday rice recipes caught my eye. The grand prize is a trip to the big apple (first-class airfare) for a consultation with celebrity party planner Preston Bailey. Would be fun to tell you about, I thought, as all you need to do is submit a recipe (featuring Uncle Ben's® rice, of course). And for every recipe submitted, Uncle Ben’s will donate $1 to Feeding America, the nation’s food bank network. Great cause. To enter “Uncle Ben’s Ultimate Holiday Rice Recipe Contest,” go to  www.unclebensgivesback.com [...]

A Conversation Piece if Nothing Else: Ty Ku, the Citrus Liqueur

I must be getting old. That or I haven’t been reading enough Page 6. I hadn’t a clue of what this young dapper guy was talking about when describing the hottest NY nightclubs where they were serving bottles of Ty Ku – the libation he was promoting. (Nor, by the way, did I care. I just felt out of it not knowing his reference.) Kirk Spahn (one of the founders of the company) described that bar scene with guests ordering an entire bottle of Ty Ku, his new Asian citrus liqueur — the server carrying it through the nightclub on a tray not only illuminated by sparklers to attract attention [...]

Kudos to Vermont Butter & Cheese Company

Thumbing through a recent issue of Specialty Food magazine — a publication for those in the fancy food business — I noticed that Vermont Butter & Cheese Company was recently awarded first prize in the outstanding product line category.  Congratulations to Alison Hooper and Bob Reese, the company founders, who began the company almost 25 years ago. You might recall that Bite of the Best had selected their Bijou (a hand-made, fresh ripened, artisanal goat cheese made in the style of the French "crottin") as our FeaturedBite  about a year ago, had offered a chance to win three of their products in our Marketplace up until September 2007, and had [...]

Microplane Sea Salt Shaver Set

From the woodshop, to the kitchen, to the “let’s make a grater in every form possible,” Microplane, the innovative kitchen utensil company, has gone a bit too far. The classic Microplane series — specifically the zester — was one of our earlier “bites” and for good reason. When the company first launched its product line the zester was innovative, practical and one of the most useful utensils in my kitchen. The reason for me writing this TidBite is because the Microplane company recently released a new line of products, including the Sea Salt Shaver set (say that 10 times fast), retailing for $24.95 that includes a small storage jar filled [...]

Photos, Facts and Recipes on Your Refrigerator Door?

A smirk crossed my face when I read yesterday's email from GE Profile describing their new refrigerator with a "media center with seven-inch LCD screen." About 7 years ago on a press trip to Korea, LG introduced a refrigerator with an LCD screen for watching TV and some other unnecessary oddities that I can no longer recall. Ridiculous, I thought, after all who wants to stand in front of their refrigerator and watch TV? At that time I suggested to our host — the executive vice president of the LG Electronics — that they instead should create something more useful with their advanced technology. My thoughts included a unit that [...]

Birds Eye Steamfresh Meals for Two Meets Whole Foods Standards

"Please join us to experience new Birds Eye Steamfresh..." was all I needed to read before deciding to head into the big apple for their editor's event. I've been a Steamfresh fan since first trying their products. (So much of a fan that we've written Bites on both the long grain rice and the veggies.) The Birds Eye team held the event in the Glass House 21 on the top floor of the Chelsea Arts Tower (545 West 25th Street, NYC) with  cocktails served on a small terrace overlooking the Hudson River. Quite nice, the heat wave had just broken. These new complete meals for two cook in just 10 [...]

FDA Identifies Jalapeno Pepper as Possible Salmonella Outbreak Source

Wanted to share today's news release from Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). This statement comes from the Food Safety Director Caroline Smith DeWaal. More than 1,200 Americans have gotten sick and two people have died after eating produce contaminated with Salmonella Saintpaul. With an investigation spanning many weeks, food safety regulators have had a challenging time trying to track suspected tomatoes and peppers up or down the supply chain, hampered by paper records and repacking practices that effectively hide the identity of produce in the distribution chain. Today FDA announced an important breakthrough in the case: A Jalapeno pepper from a Mexican farm -- repacked at a [...]

A Truism Proven: Eat Slowly to Help Lose Weight

"Slow down," I'd recommend to people who scarfed down their foods. "You're not even tasting what you're eating. "And — by the way," I'd add, "You'll eat less if you do so." That platitude is now a proven fact -- at least according to researchers at the University of Rhode Island. Their study, reported in the July issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, found that people who take small bites, putting down their fork between those bites and thoroughly chewing their food felt fuller and ate less than those who ate quickly. And, those who ate quickly consumed more food in a shorter period and weren't as [...]
