Kefir: 2000 Year Old Milk

Kefir is becoming popular, well.. at least more popular than it used to be! Modern drinkers know Kefir as a healthy, nourishing, drink.. almost as a 'yogurt shake'. The drink is actually a fermented milk drink that originated in the Caucasus region of Europe over 2000 years ago; prepared by inoculating milk (cow, goat, sheep or even soy) with 'kefir grains' (a combination of bacteria and yeasts in a matrix of proteins, lipids, and sugars). Sound complicated? Yeah, I thought so too.. Much more important than the chemistry lesson it would take to understand the nuts and bolts of Kefir, is the nutritional value This drink, a staple in much [...]

Unilever Removing Trans Fats From Soft Spreads

Unilever announced the removal of all partially hydrogenated vegetable oil from it's entire soft spread line. This includes their I Can’t Believe it’s Not Butter!, Brummel & Brown, Shedd’s Spread Country Crock, and Imperial lines. By second quarter of 2010 these spreads will contain no partially hydrogenated oil -- and therefore no trans fats per serving. Currently, these can claim "zero trans fat" on its spreads because the products meet Food and Drug Administration guidelines, that foods with less than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving can be labeled "0 grams of trans fat." I say, it's about time. For additional information read a story the USA Today or  [...]

Identity Crisis: Cachaça

Ok.. So sorry for the delay in this reporting, my timing is a bit off as you'll see. I unfortunately caught this story too late to get everyone out on the streets, but maybe you can take up the cause next year. This past month a special date was recognized, that is at least amongst a few hardcore spirit supporters. June 12th apparently marks the anniversary of a historic liquor tragedy, committed 265 years ago. In 1744, the Portuguese Crown declared that the production, distribution, and sale of Cachaça, Brazil’s noble spirit, would be illegal within the Colony of Brazil. Fortunately for us all, the Brazilian people rebelled and the [...]

Win a Private Movie Screening to “Julie & Julia”

Take a chance to win a private screening of "Julie & Julia"  — for you and 250 of your dearest friends to see this summer's foodie movie based on Julie Powell's book by the same name. The movie stars Meryl Streep as Julia and Amy Adams as Julie; and was adapted for the screen and directed by Nora Ephron. In my book, that's a perfect trinity! To win, just go here and fill out your name and address before August 31, 2009. I already did so and — being the eternal optimist — began planning the party I'd have for all my friends after the screening. The twenty-five second prizes [...]

Nut Recall: Nature Valley Granola Nut Clusters, Pecan-Containing One

Nuts are recalled yet again. On July 8 General Mills announced a voluntary recall of some "Nut Lovers" flavor of Nature Valley Granola Nut Clusters products containing pecans. This action is being taken as a precaution because pecans received from a supplier and used in the product may be tainted with salmonella. The recall only covers products with the following "best if used by" dates: March 7, 2010; March 8, 2010; March 9, 2010; March 10, 2010; and March 11, 2010. If you have one of the "Granola Nut Clusters" products listed, dispose of them and contact the company for a full refund. The company said that no [...]

Scoop Up Free Starbucks Ice Cream on Facebook

Starbucks is offering 20,000 coupons for free pints of their new ice creams via Facebook from now through July 19. Not surprisingly with a name like Starbuck, all the flavors contain coffee. There's plain Coffee, Mocha Frappuccino (swirled coffee and chocolate ice creams),  Java Chip Frappuccino (coffee ice cream with chocolate chunks) and my — and all my friends who tested this line with me — hands-down favorite, Caramel Macchiato (coffee and vanilla ice creams streaked with caramel). To get free coupon, go to Facebook at the very top of the hour to request that a coupon be sent to a friend. You need to be really quick as only [...]

Mirassou Winery : What Your Wine Personality

What's your wine personality? That's the question the printed materials from Mirassou Winery posed along with a series of questions to help determine which wine to serve your guests. For instance, Mirassou purports that if you're: Sweet you'd like Riesling Energetic you'd like Sauvignon Blanc Sporty you'd like Pinot Grigio Sunny and mellow you'd like Chardonnay A person of high standards you'd like Pinot Noir Earthy you'd like Merlot Adventurous you'd like Cabernet To see whether there was any merit in their personality quiz, I decided to turn the tables on the quiz and posed the questions a tad differently to my holiday guests. I asked them to select the [...]

The Ravi: An Instant Wine Chiller

"Are you aware that good wine is more enjoyable when served at a temperature that brings out its real true and unique flavor?" The publicist promoting the Ravi Instant Wine Refresher posed that query to me when asking whether I'd like to sample the new instant wine chiller.  Sure, I thought, always looking for potential items to feature as a bite. I did know that temperature can bring out the best or the worst in glass of wine. I had experienced the "worst" at The Bedford Post Farmhouse when my waitress V served warm white wine. The alcohol tends to predominate in warm wine, not the flavor. But the publicist [...]

Sharpen your Knives!

No, literally... Please sharpen your knives. Here are two simple facts: 1. Everyone owns knives. 2. All knives dull with use. We've all seen it in the movies... the chef getting ready to cut into a nice piece of meat, his hands gracefully engaging his butcher's knife against a steel sharpener, readying the edge for a precision slice. Funny thing is, we've all seen it, but most of us don't ever sharpen our knives. It's like looking under the hood of your car, it seems so difficult and foreign until someone just explains it simply. Sharp knives are essential. Dull knives are not only frustrating to use, but can be [...]

The American Institute of Architects Los Angeles (AIA/LA) recently announced the list of finalists for the 2009 Restaurant Design Awards (RDAs). AIA/LA extended the reach of their contest for the first time since the RDAs inception in 2005, now accepting projects from any US-based firm for consideration. Here are the finalists (seems a bit California-centric though, don't ya think?) RESTAURANT FINALISTS [...]

The Cookie Diet

The official first day of summer is upon us. Yes, that means it’s time to hit the beaches. As such (in a very image conscious and driven society), many people are trying to shed a few pounds they may have added over the long, cold winter. Such a ripe set of circumstances offers great opportunities to the promoters of fad dieting, and this season there is an interesting one I've just come across.. though it is apparently over 30 years old! The COOKIE DIET (yes, the cookie diet) - Great marketing, right?! I mean, cookies.. sold! Please know that I'm not speaking in any way about the nutritional value or [...]

The Mushroom Guys

I love dedication, it's inspiring.. And I have to say that it's especially inspiring when it's dedication to food! We've written previously about Transatlantic Foods on Bite of the Best. The New York-based company specializes in fresh, frozen, dried and processed wild and exotic mushrooms, as well as putting out a great selection of additional boutique food products. As a food blogger myself, I like to see others putting their passion for food into online words. I was happy to find that one of the founders of Transatlantic Foods recently launched a blog called The Mushroom Guys. Though the blog does serve to as a tool to promote their company [...]

Whynatte Latte, wha?

Ok, so I've been seeing this product a lot around town. If you haven't seen it yet, well, now you have. So… what is a Whynatte? After much google research, it seems it's actually many things (a cocktail, an energy drink, a way of being - yes, I actually read that). The most basic manifestation is the cocktail, composed of two simple ingredients: a hot latte and an ice cold shot of Jagermeister...combine, chug, you get the idea. The story apparently begins in California, 2004. Following a bender of dramatic proportions, the creators nursed their hangovers with their morning tradition, a hot latte. Figuring that it was already time to [...]

From Iberia to Latin America: First Stop Ibiza Restaurant

The Foodie tours have commenced with the first of seven — for the International Festival of Arts & Ideas 2009 — held on Saturday June 13. Flavors from Iberia to South America's first stop was Ibiza, 39 High Street, New Haven (203.865.1933) hosted by owners Juan Carlos Gonzales and his wife Maria. Chef Manuel Romero demonstrated vieiras (scallops). Specifically Seared George Bank sea scallops with asparagus, butternut squash, grape tomatoes in a potato foamy emulsion. The chef first lightly seasoned the scallops with a pinch of salt and then seared them in extra virgin olive oil; he set them aside as he added thinly diagonally sliced asparagus, diced butternut squash [...]
