Add Flavor Not Sodium to Food

Did you know Americans consume almost twice the recommended limit of salt each day?* In an effort to combat the health risks associated with high-sodium diets, the New York City Health Department recently launched a national initiative to decrease the salt content in foods over the next five years. As health organizations, advocacy groups and medical experts promote this new policy, it’s important for Americans to know they can drastically reduce their sodium intake without compromising the flavor of their food. Original Tabasco brand pepper sauce has been adding flavor to food for over 140 years. But unlike most hot sauces, which contain 100 to 240 milligrams of sodium per [...]

Iphone Beer App

I always thought apps and beer went great together! I mean, give me mussels and beer, charcuterie and beer, cheese and beer, heck.. beer and pretzels! Oh how things change, even words change. The word app could not be mistaken for anything but an appetizer in years past, but now it's a whole new ballgame. An app now refers to an 'application', a program that runs on any one of the countless devices you likely have with you right now. Stella Artois has recently launched their own app for the iphone. Le Bar Guide helps beer connoisseurs locate a perfectly poured glass of Belgian beer (specifically, Stella). The app is [...]

"SHE is highly educated and working hard, both at home and at the office. SHE is worried about climate change globally and the environment in her own backyard. SHE is worried about children’s diets and health. SHE is not indulging in much, in order to reduce expenses. SHE is making most of the purchasing decisions for her family, and SHE is reshaping commerce and culture as we know it. It is the new SHEconomy. Oh, and SHE is tired," began the third annual Fresh Ideas Group (FIG) consumers trends forecast. The Fresh Ideas Group is a specialist communications agency based in Boulder, Colorado. Ganja Gourmet

We've sampled a lot of interesting products on Bite of the Best, but some new ingredients I never thought I'd see on the national food stage. While the debate about the uses and safety of marijuana will likely continue to rage on in the United States for the rest of foreseeable time, the situation does seem to be continually changing. Though the U.S. has long considered the plant illegal, nowadays, more and more states are flirting with the idea of decriminalizing 'medicinal marijuana'. The whole system is quite confusing to be frank; it seems a convoluted maze of local, state and federal laws and authorities, each contradicting the other. But, [...]

Restaurant Resolutions…

It's officially the new year. It hasn't just started, it's almost February... have you made any headway on your new year's resolutions? Was it to get back in the gym? To lay off dessert? To spend more time with the family? Heck, maybe it was just to be a better person... There are a number of great tasks you could have set for yourself, but if you were a restaurant, you'd only have one new year's resolution for 2010... get some people in the seats this year! 2009 was a very bad year for the world's economy in general. It's hard to say who had it worse, and why bother [...]

Regift the Fruitcake

I hope this concept is still going well past the holidays. Fruitcake typically doesn't make it to the top of anyone's holiday wish list.  This year, that changed as celebrity ambassadors and everyday people (that's the 'rest of us') came together to make sure  fruitcake became this year's holiday hero by raising money for 25 major charities. Through PayPal's "Regift the Fruitcake" campaign, a virtual fruitcake is being passed around online (using facebook) in the name of charity. It's kind of like the 'matrix. To help fruitcakes make an impact, it's easy as: 1. MAKE: Log on to create a fruitcake on behalf of a featured charity. 2. DONATE: Make [...]

More Natural Necco Wafers

Necco Wafers have gone back to the candy’s 145-year-old roots. The company has replaced the artificial flavors and colors with ones from beets, cabbage and cocoa powder, to name a few. In addition, they've removed the controversial high fructose corn syrup. I like that they're made of more natural ingredients, and that they are fat free, gluten free and modest in calories. A junior roll contains 50 all-sugar calories, the large rolls 210. In addition to the traditional flavors (Orange, Lemon, Cinnamon, Clove, Licorice, Wintergreen and Milk Chocolate), Necco has introduced a chocolate version, with Milk Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, White Chocolate and Mocha wafers. - bonnie

20th Annual Golden Shopping Cart Awarded

"Clean labels. Whole grains. Gluten-free. Antioxidants. Omega-3s. Those seven words sum up new food-product introductions of 2009," that's what syndicated columnists Bonnie Tandy Leblang (that's me!) and Carolyn Wyman wrote to introduce our year end best and worst picks of the year. Together we coauthor Supermarket Sampler, a weekly review of what's new on the grocers' shelves syndicated by Andrews McMeel/Universal Press and written in two voices: mine, the registered dietitian, and Carolyn Wyman’s, a professed junk foodie. Each year we pick our joint "Double Forks Down" or why-did-they-make them list of foods introduced in 2009, our individual best-of-the-year picks plus the one product we agreed was both tasty and [...]
