Les Dames d’Escoffier New York Inducts Eight New Members

The New York chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier, comprised of leading women in the food and fine beverage industries, inducted eight new members at a ceremony and reception on September 27th held at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City. Membership in Les Dames d’Escoffier is by invitation. Each candidate must have achieved distinction and stature in her industry for a minimum of five years and be nominated by two Les Dames d’Escoffier New York members. Potatoes Can Be Included in Weight Loss Diet

The humble spud can be included in your weight loss diet says research recently released by the University of California, Davis and the National Center for Food Safety and Technology, Illinois Institute of Technology.  The study, funded by United States Potato Board, looked at the role of potatoes (a high glycemic index food) and the glycemic index in weight loss of 86 overweight men and women. Participants were divided into three groups each with a different diet regime that included five to seven servings of potatoes per week while reducing their daily caloric intake by 500 calories. Riviera Maya Culinary Event

The Worst Burger in America

Consumer Reports has named the McDonald's hamburger the worst-tasting burger in America. Congratulations. The largest supplier of burgers is the worst, is anybody surprised? The magazine surveyed 28,000 people nationwide to come up with rankings on a ten point scale. Five Guys and In-N-Out Burger topped the list. Burger King came in tied for next to last place (another big surprise). The survey was conducted by polling online subscribers, asking them to rate the burgers they had eaten on their last visit on a scale of 1 to 10. Halloween on The Harbor

Fall Cooking Classes in New Mexico

Jane Butel’s Southwestern Cooking School, now in its 27th year features Southwestern and Mexican Cooking with  two weekend classes this fall — October 8-10, and November 12-14. The classes are taught in Jane’s professional kitchen in her Corrales, New Mexico home. Mory’s in New Haven Reopened

After being closed for over 20 months, the storied Mory’s Association, a fixture in the New Haven community for over 150 years, re-opened its premises at 306 York Street in August. Mory's has a long and distinguished history since its founding in the mid-1800's; it is still a membership-only dining establishment.
