Breakfast at Joe’s Cafe, Santa Barbara, California

We had a few hours to kill in Santa Barbara before heading to the airport for our flight home. To have enough time to catch our flight, we took the pre-sunrise Amtrak Pacific Surfliner from San Luis Obispo. We walked into town from the train station, stopping at Joe's, a friendly cafe at the bottom of State Street, where we sat outside to enjoy our last day in California. Fortunately, as train passengers, we could leave our carry-ons ($10 each) with the stationmaster, a service I didn't realize had returned since the pandemic. Joe's is a very friendly cafe with sidewalk seating. We took advantage of that as we were [...]

A Return to Hutong, Midtown, NYC

This time, I knew where to find the Hutang restaurant, whose address is on Lexington Avenue. Its entrance is in the alley off 58th Street, where Le Cirque had been, halfway between Lex and Third. Hutang, by the way, means alley. We were there for the prix fixe $30 lunch offering a selection of appetizers, entrees and side dishes. Some sipped a glass of their one rosé selection, crisp and dry Chateau De Rouet, Reserve Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Cotes de Provence, France, 2023 ($22). Some started with their hot and sour soup, others the king prawn salad. The soup was tasty—peppery and tangy—but I prefer my homemade better. I prepare it [...]

Bostwick on the Harbor, East Hampton, Long Island, NY

We arrived at Bostwick on the Harbor early to be sure we'd get right in instead of on a waiting list. We even got seated on the porch out of the sun as it began setting. We sipped our Flora Dora (Hendricks gin, club soda), Casamigo Blanc Margie and Aperol Spritz,  ($16-$17) while savoring the breathtaking view. We decided to share their delectable lightly dressed in a sherry fig vinaigrette salad ($19) with two warm goat cheese croquettes on baby arugula, sliced grape tomatoes, green apple batons, rounds of dried figs and candied pecans. I highly recommend. Then, each of us ordered Bostwick's hearty cold lobster roll on a warm [...]

Caló Kitchen + Tequila, Laguna Niguel, CA

We stopped to have lunch at Caló Kitchen + Tequila restaurant before heading to Barnes & Noble for a book for my granddaughter. My daughter-in-law, granddaughter and I nibbled on their shrimp ceviche ($17) and their warm, wonderful beans and salsa with chips while the adults sipped margies. I tried their Cadillac one made with milagro blanco and Grand Marnier, asking for their spicy twist ($15), while my d-i-l had the grilled pineapple chile one ($16). Both delicious. When ordering from our well-trained waiter, Alex, I realized he knew his Mexican sauces. As a New Yorker, I was fascinated by the enchilada discussion. My d-i-l was hoping for Enchiladas Suizas, [...]

Orsay, Upper East Side, NYC

After going to a book launch lecture at Librairie Albertine, we looked for a place to get something to eat al fresco at it was a perfect summer eve. We asked the man on the street who we had seen earlier chatting with neighbors before the event, Orsay, he said, which sparked my friend's mind. She lived in the UES years ago. Perfect outdoor seating on a balmy summer night. My friend ordered the frisée salad ($17) redolent with huge bacon chunks all topped with a poached egg; I chose the perfect salad foil the Sauternes-marinated pate ($26) with quince chutney and brioche toast. I continue on the Bordeaux that I started at [...]

Tacombi, West Village, NYC + Harry Clarke

Decided to meet a friend for a quick bite at Tacombi on Bleeker Street, a 4-minute walk from the Minetta Lane Theatre where  Tony Award-winner Billy Crudup stars in Harry Clarke, a one-man show that has been described as “a sexually charged and wickedly funny thriller." For a full review of the show, click here. I've eaten at the Tacombi in my hood a few times; it's where I've had one of the best versions of huevos rancheros. This smaller version of that place offers a very limited menu that's served so quickly - it's like fast food.  My friend loved the blend of freshly pressed papaya, carrots, pineapple and orange ($6.95), [...]

Kitchen Table Bakers Flax Seed Parmesan Crisps

bonnie_webBonnie: If you’re a cheese lover as we are, you’re going to love these new cheese crisps. These wafer-thin crackers are made entirely out of Parmesan cheese, with some flax seeds added for nutrition. A three-cracker serving packs 500 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids, shown to reduce inflammation while being good for your heart.

When you start with the finest ingredients — such as...

BLOGGER-B_2Bryan: What's better than cheese on a cracker? When it comes to snacking, not too many items, but why complicate things? What if I told you that you could just have a gourmet "cheese cracker," and save yourself a step? Well, that's basically what Barry Novick thought when he left his job as a hospital administrator at age 55 in order to create his own...

eric...Eric: In a 2011 online post, NPR quoted economists who crunched food consumption data collected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as stating that the average American consumes 31 pounds of cheese. That said, let's introduce a new option to the cheese-consumption scale: Kitchen Table Bakers Flax Seed Parmesan Crisps.

This 100 percent Parmesan cheese crisp with ...

Pretzel Crisps Dark Chocolate & Peppermint

bonnie_webBonnie: Do not open a bag of Dark Chocolate & Peppermint Pretzel Crisps if you have no will power. Yes, these dark chocolate-covered thin pretzel wafers sprinkled with crushed peppermint candy are that good!

Imagine thin, crunchy Pretzel Crisps enrobed in rich dark chocolate and then sprinkled with peppermint candies that are colored with beet juice and flavored...

bryan5cBryan: We've written about Snack Factory before. Though you might think by its name that it produces a wide range of snackable foods, it is a one-food company. This, of course, is not a bad thing. Why do a hundred things poorly if you can do one thing superbly? Snack Factory does pretzel crisps, and it does them superbly. They're thin, they're baked, they're crunchy. They're chips in pretzel form, and they're a delicious, nutritional ...

eric...Eric: I truly am not a person to tout chocolate-covered items as being anything more than what they are; you can cover anything with chocolate, but if the cacao's quality is poor, than the product is merely ordinary. This, luckily, is not the case for Snack Factory's Chocolate & Peppermint Pretzel Crisps.

These snacks are addictive -- so ...
