Pizzeria Molto Wine Bar, Fairfield

When my financial adviser suggested we have lunch at a pizzeria in Fairfield, I was a bit surprised as we had previously dined at nice restaurants. I was even more shocked when I was greeted at the door by a handsome waiter, waiting to talk us to a white tablecloth topped table with decent glassware. A pizzeria this Molto is not. As we perused the menu, we were given crusty nice-textured bread and a rich green olive oil, seasoned with hot peppers. And I sipped on my glass of Zaccagini Montepulciano from Abruzzi($9) that went well with both my salad and our entrees. My piled high arugula salad ($9) came [...]

Montage Resort, Deer Valley

I don't know about you, but my mother's handbook says I must visit wherever my kids are. That rule has taken me around the world but this time, to the alpine-inspired sanctuary at Montage Deer Valley (Utah) earlier this year.  Montage has ski in, ski out access to Deer Valley, voted the #1 ski resort by the readers of SKI magazine, many years in a row. Voters say it's “skiing in the lap of luxury.” It is. And luxury is the way to describe Montage, a luxury resort with personalized service that opened December 2010. (The brand has two other resorts, both located in California.) I love inspecting all the [...]

Sababa to Open in Whole Enchilada Space

On the walk to work today, I noticed a new awning has gone up next to well-known Irish bar Anna Liffy’s on Whitney Ave. Hard to see clearly in the photo, but the name of the place is Sababa  - The awning says Eat-in, take-out and catering, along with falafel, soups and salads.  Keep a look-out for the grand opening!  The space was formerly occupied by the Whole Enchilada. Stay tuned for more info! - Special Correspondent Robbin Seipold

Scoozzi’s Executive Chef now at Mory’s

Mory’s on York Street has revamped their lunch and dinner menus – as a result of hiring new Executive chef Jeff Caputo. Jeff had a wonderful, long standing, reputation as the Executive Chef at Scoozzi’s restaurant downtown – which closed doors several months ago. (Still a big mystery as to why) Mory’s is still a members only club – but membership is no longer limited to just Yalies – and their dress code in their new Temple Bar allows jeans and offers drink specials! Check out their website for membership details, and check out their new menus too! Lunch Menu - Dinner Menu - Special correspondent Robbin Seipold The Mory's [...]

The Red Lentil, New Haven

Before heading to see The Artist at the Criterion, we stopped in across the street at the Red Lentil Vegetarian and Vegan Restaurant for dinner. Since we had left ourselves lots of time before the show started, we had martini's before dinner. Problem was the fresh juicer stopped working after they'd made only one Garden Martini  (vodka, fresh cucumber juice, St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur and fresh lime juice $10) so only one drink could have that fresh cucumber juice. So we ended up sampling their  Temple Pear martini (Grey Goose vodka, St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur and fresh squeezed lime juice, $10) and the Organically Dirty Martini (Rain Organic Vodka and olive [...]

Mariposa, Deer Valley, Utah

While out in Utah last month, I dined at Mariposa in Deer Valley with my friend Letty Flatt  — pastry chef and author of Chocolate Snowball: and Other Fabulous Pastries from Deer Valley Bakery (Globe Pequot Press), recently published in paperback. I mention dining with Letty so you'll understand why we sampled every dessert on the menu! If you're looking for a night of fine dining after a day on the slopes, it's the place to go. I love sharing a meal with foodies - as then one gets to sample lots of menu choices. The four of us began with the "oyster lovers bliss" — their fresh kumamoto oysters from [...]

Pacifico, New Haven

Three of us stopped by Pacifico after seeing the amazing Meryl Streep in Iron Lady at the Criterion. After Connecticut Magazine selected Pacifico's mojito ($10) as the best, was there anything else to order? This Nuevo Latino restaurant does this rum drink right with fresh muddled mint, squished limes and sugar in white rum. We ordered some tapas thinking they'd satisfy. I do like chef Rafael Palomino’s food, but not the portion sizes. The Argentinean braised sirloin steak empanadas served with plumped raisins and cilantro aioli ($9) are tasty but in need of more filling as were the Baha Fish tacos($9). "Where's the fish?" I actually asked. My favorite of [...]

Swill in Branford Closed, Tacuba Expanding

Arturo Franco Camacho and his wife Suzette Camacho — the folks behind the magic of Roomba, bespoke, the Suburban and their latest creations in Branford: Tacuba Taco bar and Swill wine bar — have just announced the closing of Swill, but what also sounds like the opening of another new creation… “Friends and wine lovers- we have great news and sad news... First , the sad- Swill closed over the weekend. Many of you were aware that this was coming( swill was our temporary solution to lack of space) , because finally- After two long years of being extremely patient, good things come to those that wait. We finally have the [...]

Squatters Roadhouse Grill & Pub

If you're looking for a meal that won't break the bank after a hard night partying in Park City or just a meal to fill your tummy after a day on the slopes, Squatters could be your place. Squatters serves breakfast all day -- that plus other Western diner-type food. I was in the mood for Huevos Rancheras ($9.99), my dining partner just wanted a turkey sandwich with fries ($9.99) and a brew. Squatters offers almost as many brews as dining options. Willy Amendment ($4.79) was the selection. If you order, I recommend asking for the huevos rancheros sans the hash browns.  This hearty breakfast dish consisted of a layer  [...]

Bespoke Now = Gilt

The restaurant on College Street formerly known as bespoke, originally owned by restaurant aficionados Arturo Franco Camacho and his wife Suzette Camacho, was bought several years ago by , founding owner of Aristology LLC .  After keeping the name and varying the menu a bit through the years, including the addition of a rooftop beer garden, she has now decided to make a big change …the restaurant is now called Gilt and is now a Moroccan Steakhouse and Lounge.  Aside from the change in menu, they’re still using all three floors, still featuring live entertainment and  continuing to offer Sunday brunch. - reported by special correspondent Robbin Seipold Gilt 266 [...]

Bandits Grill & Bar, Park City, Utah

A day on the slopes works up quite an appetite - one that can easily be satisfied by at visit to Bandits on Main Street in downtown Park City. My dining companion ordered the huge appetizer portion their  pricey but addictingly good, crispy onion rings ($11.99) that washed down well with a draft of Bandits' Brew Amber Ale (16-ounce, $5; 25-ounce, $6.50). For dinner we shared a "Black & Bleu Kobe" that consisted of a American Kobe beef burger with cracked black pepper, crumbled bleu cheese, caramelized onions, lettuce and tomatoes, served with a choice of two sides ($ 18.99). We selected their vinegary coleslaw and french fries. Then, we [...]

“Kitchen Nighmares” Wants Restaurants in Need of Help

Do you know a restaurant trying to make some green, but still running in the red? Or maybe it has a great location, but is unable to bring in the customers... Well, the senior casting producer for Fox TV's show "Kitchen Nightmares" starring Gordon Ramsay contacted us at Bite of the Best to tap our network of readers to see if any of you know of restaurants in need of Gordon's help. If so, email twinsworld@aol.com and include  name, contact info, name of the restaurant, where it's located, type of cuisine, number of seats, how long it's been open, photos or website if available — and most important — why  [...]

The Grill on the Alley

Walking into The Grill on the Alley on a cold, rainy, and blustery evening felt like stepping onto an island of calm. Chef Daniel, who works this restaurant as if he were entertaining his friends at home, greeted us and led us to a quiet booth with a full view of the restaurant. The décor resembled an uptown steak house, with black and white deco inspired details, soft lighting, waiters in white dinner jackets, helpful and attentive, but not obtrusive. But, let’s get to the food, which surprised us on several counts. The Dallas branch of The Grill on the Alley opened in 2006 at the Galleria Dallas. The Grill [...]

Cave A’ Vin, New Haven

After seeing My Week with Marilyn — which is not to be missed, as Michelle Williams embodied the sultry star in an Oscar-worthy performance — we headed to Cave A' Vin on State Street for a nibble and to listen to Faye Green, who was performing. And a nibble is all you get while sipping on some wine or beer.  The food choices include a selection of cheeses from their blackboard listing, onion soup, chili, hummus, a few assorted other nibbles and a panini. Presentation is attractive on curved thick wood platters garnished with some fruit . My friend selected three cheeses ($16/three) from the chalk board — aged Cheddar,  [...]

Zafra: Cuban Restaurant & Rum Bar, New Haven

My first taste of the authentic Cuban food of Zafra was at a lecture at the Cheshire Library this fall when Yale professor Carlos Eire spoke about his writings — "Waiting for Snow in Havana" and "Learning to Die in Miami"  — and his fascinating life. That sampling was intriguing enough for me to head to Orange Street for more.  The word "zafra," by the way, refers to the sugar cane harvest. In addition to the Cuban fare and classic rum cocktails, Zafra offers flights of about 100 rums. We opted for the Ron Medellin, an 8-year old Columbian rum, served neat. For an appetizer, we shared a flavorful shrimp [...]

Murphy’s, Atlanta

Until this evening's visit, I had only frequented Murphy's in the Virginia/Highland area for Sunday brunch. Loved their basket of fresh muffins and biscuits that accompanied menu offerings - and their freshly brewed coffee. Just looking for something light, we just shared a few thing starting with flash-fried tender sweet calamari ($11) . This wasn't served with the typical warm marinara sauce but with two sauces: a cocktail one usually accompanying other shellfish plus  a weird sauce of apple cider vinegar, diced Granny smith apples, garlic and crushed pink peppercorns. In addition, we split an entree portion of  Murphy's Caesar salad with their crispy shaved onion rings and spicy croutons [...]

Michael’s Downtown in Blue Pearl Space, New Haven

Okay folks - they just opened so give them some time to get in the groove of things, but Michael's downtown is in the spot on Court Street formerly occupied by The Blue Pearl. Featuring steaks, fish and pasta, the restaurant is owned by the same family responsible for Michael's Trattoria in Wallingford.  I was downtown, saw the lights and happened to walk in on their first night open for business. They're still working on the decor, which is currently warmer than Blue Pearl, but not yet complete, and they served me a delicious plate of mussels, but didn't have any bread or pasta to go with it.... yet.  So [...]
