Chef Waldy Malouf Turns up the Heat

High Heat Burgers & Tap is located on Bleecker Street just minutes away from all of the major downtown subway stops. It's the newest place from Chef Waldy Malouf, long-time chef of Beacon, Rainbow Room and Hudson River Club. Aside from a fast casual, laid back atmosphere splashed with artful graffiti, High Heat is a comfortable place to spend an hour or two. From the natural wood tables and counter tops to the iron and rustic stone details, you will feel the essence of a natural environment, matching the honest food offered. The ‘tap’ portion is named after the 8 wines and 8 beers (as locally sourced as possible) that [...]

Thai Awesome, Hamden

I've been living in Hamden for decades, but it was only last week I tripped over and decided to try Thai Awesome restaurant on Dixwell Avenue, right next to KFC. While I was waiting for my friend Claire to arrive, I watched a line up of people coming in for take out and was the only person in the restaurant. I wondered whether had made a mistake in selecting this place to meet. We began with the summer rolls overflowing with fresh vegetables, shredded lettuce and shrimp wrapped in rice paper with a just spicy enough peanut sauce  ($5.99).  We followed that with bowls of Tom Yum Goong soup -- the [...]

Bronx Burgers + Ride The Tiger at Long Wharf

Before attending opening night of the powerful Ride the Tiger by William Mastrosimone at Long Wharf last week, we stopped by the just-opened Bronx Burgers located where Goodfellas used to be. (Goodfellas moved up the street to 702 State.) The restaurant offers a few apps, burgers and sides. You'll find make-your-own 8-ounce prime certified, Angus beef burgers ($9.50) where you select the type of bread, toppings ($1 each) and/or cheeses ($1 each) and a couple of specialty burgers. All come with lettuce, tomato and fries. I chose the babe burger, topped with guacamole, 2 strips bacon, a fried egg, jalapeños and Monterey Jack cheese ($11). What was I thinking! The burger  [...]

Christopher Martins, New Haven

Christopher Martin's is a neighborhood restaurant that served local before local was hip! (At least according to lore!) I met some friends there for lunch recently. One had the huge grilled pear salad with added salmon ($18.50), another the soup and half sandwich special ($9.50) and me the Cajun chicken sandwich with Cajun fries ($9.50). The grilled chicken in my hearty sandwich had been dipped in Cajun spices and was served topped with bacon, cheddar cheese and lettuce all on a hard roll.  The soup & sandwich special  included a bowl of creamy clam chowder and that day's  special chicken sandwich topped with ham and cheese. Both of us who [...]

The Loft at Montage, Laguna Beach

I was invited to sample the incredible seasonal food at The Loft at Montage, Laguna Beach and was seated on the terrace with a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean. Life doesn't get much better! As their guest, I was able to order half-portions and tiny tastings of many dishes. We began with a taste of their sweet tomato bisque made from heirloom tomatoes from Tutti Fruitti farm in Santa Ynez Valley and accompanied by gougère that oozed queso fresco. Interestingly, the puffs of choux pastry are gluten free as they're made with manioc, a root flour. Being a fry lover, I had to sample the trio of fries served [...]

Bella’s Cafe, Westville, New Haven

Bella's Cafe on Whalley Avenue in Westville is one of the brunch places where you don't mind waiting for a table, as the food is that good. I've waited outside with friends many a Sunday, so I thought perhaps  I'd beat the crowd if I met a friend there for a Saturday brunch. Not exactly. Although not as long, we still had to wait. (They do not take reservations!) We started with bellinis ($7) — I had the blood orange one (sans any blood orange flavor), my friend enjoyed the flavorful raspberry one. The blood orange bellini was this brunch's only disappointment. The chilaquiles were wonderful layers of tortillas soaked [...]

briq Restaurant, New Haven

The heavy doors of the former bespoke — and short term Gilt — have re-opened as briq, located at 266 College Street. Under the direction of Executive Chef Mike Hazen, formerly with Barcelona, and whom I like to refer to as “the man who showed me how to properly chop vegetables,” is in the kitchen creating delicious, reasonably priced, “global tapas.” briq offers a full bar, with a unique cocktail menu, and is staffed with some familiar faced, highly-skilled bartenders – which perhaps serves as rumor confirmation that a certain mixology impresario, from a certain popular street-numbered lounge, is involved at briq. There hasn't been a grand opening yet as [...]

ROIA comes to New Haven:Bringing Sexy Back..1920’s Style

Bringing sexy back to New Haven, 1920’s style is ROIA Restaurant & Cafe…located on College St. next door to the Shubert (former Hot Tomato’s). I heard rumors that the well-known grand staircase was being removed and had concerns that all the gorgeous features that make the building breathtaking would be destroyed. I am happy to report that nothing could be farther from the truth! The new owners have restored the building to its original glory…. taking time to peel layers of wall covering and floor tile to reveal the original white oak walls and mosaic tile flooring.  Structurally, many other elements have changed for the better…no need to go to [...]

The Cafeteria Boston

Stopped by the Cafeteria Boston for a light lunch recently when on Newbury Street in Boston. Our server didn't balk when we asked for something not on the menu specifically, although each ingredient was listed within a dish. He brought a side of refreshing hummus with a bowls of kalamata olives and tzatziki ($7). We also sampled their plump and tender PEI mussels steamed in beer along with  tomato, garlic and chunks of chorizo ($12). The appetizer portion of their Greek Salad was plentiful, with lots of tomato, cucumber and feta, sprinkled with diced onion, all in a oregano vinaigrette ($10) We opted on an unusual sweet fig pizza, with a [...]

The Lawrence, Atlanta

Midtown overflows with places to get a good meal, including The Lawrence where I went on my recent Atlanta visit. We ordered our wine while perusing the menu. Since they were out of our first two choices, our appetizers arrived before our wine. We ended up with a Gamay, specifically Jean-Marc Burgaud, Vielles Vignes, Moron France ($48), that was light, yet rich enough for our selections. We started with a light duck liver mousse whipped with port wine and served with quince paste and grilled sourdough bread ($10). Oddly, our server asked if we wanted more bread, we said yes as we still had some mousse leftover. I say oddly,  [...]
