The Wharf-Madison Beach Hotel, CT

There’s nothing more perfect on a warm summer's night than alfresco dining on a deck of a hotel, as at the Wharf-Madison Beach Hotel on the Sound. We began with a grilled Caesar salad - half a Romaine heart drizzled with dressing in the company of one lonely anchovy and topped with a Parmesan crisp cooked so way too ahead of time that it was impossible to either cut or bite into. Happily, the meal was uphill from there. We first split an order of cioppino ($36) — the Italian-American seafood stew originating in San Francisco — with tender sea scallops, shrimp, mussels, clams and chunks of lobster bathing in [...]

Susan Feniger’s Street

I should have listened. All my LA-foodie friends mentioned that Street had never caught on. But knowing Susan Feniger and having previously really enjoyed her food, I decided to go anyway. Silly, silly me. The dining area of the restaurant is in an outside covered area with the noises of the street. Interesting concept but way too noisy. The service staff were not only rude but were clueless about items offered, needing to find out the ingredients and country of origin of many dishes. At least occasionally, one would return with the information. I was hoping that the "street" food with Susan's interpretive twists would make up for all this. [...]

Andrra, East Hampton, NY

Andrra offers Mediterranean-styled cuisine using local produce and serving fresh fish. It's a new restaurant in a place with a sort-of revolving door – last year it was something else. What continues to draw patrons, no matter what the name, is the incredible vista with magnificent sunset by the water. That part is wonderful, what isn't so great is the noise level. To make matters worse, I was sitting with a very tired toddler, screaming in my ear as he was crawling over his father, who was attempting to eat. Noise aside, the food is good, albeit pricey. Well, it is the Hamptons after all. Our table started chopped and [...]

Las Fuentes Mexican Bar and Grill

Driving thru a small town before jumping the highway to Ontario airport after Camp Blogawy, we checked the apps on my iPhone and then asked around for a Mexican restaurant with bar. We wanted to have a margarita before heading home. We ended up at Las Fuentes Mexican Bar and Grill and ordered El Abuele margaritas.  The bartender calls that margie The Grandaddy ($8.99) as it's made with fresh squeezed lime and orange juices, Corralejo Blanco, Cointreau and Grand Marnier. I loved that it was made without sickly sweet artificially flavored mixes. It was truly the real thing, going down quite smoothly while we nibbled fresh warm tortilla chips dipped in [...]

Madden’s Gastropub Now Open, New Haven

The former Humphrey’s location has gone through several incarnations since the original one closed many years ago. With the opening of Madden’s Gastropub, it may be a long-term winner. In a city that offers every type of cuisine possible, Madden’s offers good American fare – some in the classic sense, some with a creative twist.  The menu includes a variety of soups, salads, appetizers, sandwiches and entrees. I opted for the Pastrami Bomb, described as a “generous portion of pastrami, Swiss, sautéed peppers, onions, mushroom with spicy mustard" ($10). The sandwich was served with perfectly seasoned fries and tasty coleslaw. They weren’t kidding on the “generous portion of pastrami”!  The [...]

Pizzeria Mozza

I ended up eating at Pizzeria Mozza by myself, as the friend I was meeting had to cancel. I was upset only that I had no one to sample and share more of all the amazing food with... at this always packed Hancock Park, just South of Hollywood place. I found the staff amazingly friendly and accommodating, and the food spectacular. This place is not to be missed  - it's even worth driving in the classic LA horrific traffic to go to. I had been told not to miss the chicken liver bruschetta (always on menu). The buttered toast is topped with chopped chicken livers ($9) and served with capers, [...]

Crazy Coyote Tacos

After picking up my friend Karen at Ontario Airport on our way to Camp Blogaway in Angelus Oaks, she convinced me to stop and shop at the high-end Cabazon Outlets to shop. On the way out heading to the highway, we saw a small taco stand. We learned it was family owned place who made everything from scratch. We each indulged in a super taco with chicken ($6.50), with house made fresh corn tortillas, salsa and guacamole with tender chicken chile verde and cheese — served of course with rice and saucy beans. A messy soul-satisfying meal not to be missed. - bonnie Follow @BonnieBOTB Crazy Coyote Tacos 13033 Fields [...]

Pasta Cosi, Branford

Boy was I wrong! The name Pasta Cosi had connoted a mediocre chain restaurant to me — it's anything but. I ended up there one Sunday recently on the spur of the moment with some friends as I was in Branford. I was quite impressed with the restaurant, especially the fresh pasta. We started by nibbling the crusty fresh bread, dipped into their rich flavorful imported EVOO and grated cheese.  Our app was the evening's special of  grilled longhorn green peppers with lots of crisp garlic, kalamata olives and Asiago cheese ($14), described as hot, yet quite mild and flavorful. Wines — compared to NYC — are quite reasonable at [...]

McLoone’s Boathouse, West Orange

McLoone's Boathouse in West Orange, NJ offers families simple fare  — a fact which was obvious as we were handed a buzzer to let us know when our table was ready.  This was not to be gourmet fare. The restaurant is one of musician Tim McLoone many locations, the first being Rum Runner in Sea Bright New Jersey, that opened in 1987. The tomatoey Manhattan clam chowder ($7.95) was fine, although the server splashed it all over the rim when serving. The salads were huge — prepared for quantity not quality. The Apple-Walnut salad ($12.95) contained baby greens, some Gorgonzola cheese a couple grapes, lots of thinly sliced fennel and [...]
