Pizzeria Mozza

I ended up eating at Pizzeria Mozza by myself, as the friend I was meeting had to cancel. I was upset only that I had no one to sample and share more of all the amazing food with... at this always packed Hancock Park, just South of Hollywood place. I found the staff amazingly friendly and accommodating, and the food spectacular. This place is not to be missed  - it's even worth driving in the classic LA horrific traffic to go to. I had been told not to miss the chicken liver bruschetta (always on menu). The buttered toast is topped with chopped chicken livers ($9) and served with capers, [...]

Crazy Coyote Tacos

After picking up my friend Karen at Ontario Airport on our way to Camp Blogaway in Angelus Oaks, she convinced me to stop and shop at the high-end Cabazon Outlets to shop. On the way out heading to the highway, we saw a small taco stand. We learned it was family owned place who made everything from scratch. We each indulged in a super taco with chicken ($6.50), with house made fresh corn tortillas, salsa and guacamole with tender chicken chile verde and cheese — served of course with rice and saucy beans. A messy soul-satisfying meal not to be missed. - bonnie Follow @BonnieBOTB Crazy Coyote Tacos 13033 Fields [...]

Pasta Cosi, Branford

Boy was I wrong! The name Pasta Cosi had connoted a mediocre chain restaurant to me — it's anything but. I ended up there one Sunday recently on the spur of the moment with some friends as I was in Branford. I was quite impressed with the restaurant, especially the fresh pasta. We started by nibbling the crusty fresh bread, dipped into their rich flavorful imported EVOO and grated cheese.  Our app was the evening's special of  grilled longhorn green peppers with lots of crisp garlic, kalamata olives and Asiago cheese ($14), described as hot, yet quite mild and flavorful. Wines — compared to NYC — are quite reasonable at [...]

McLoone’s Boathouse, West Orange

McLoone's Boathouse in West Orange, NJ offers families simple fare  — a fact which was obvious as we were handed a buzzer to let us know when our table was ready.  This was not to be gourmet fare. The restaurant is one of musician Tim McLoone many locations, the first being Rum Runner in Sea Bright New Jersey, that opened in 1987. The tomatoey Manhattan clam chowder ($7.95) was fine, although the server splashed it all over the rim when serving. The salads were huge — prepared for quantity not quality. The Apple-Walnut salad ($12.95) contained baby greens, some Gorgonzola cheese a couple grapes, lots of thinly sliced fennel and [...]

Prospect, San Francisco

Before heading to San Francisco after a family event in San Luis Obispo, I asked around as to what was new since I had last been. I learned that Nancy Oakes (Boulevard) had opened Prospect on Spear Street. The six of us stopped by for dinner. Knowing me, the management sent out lots of nibbles for use to try. Those included four deviled eggs, referred to as green eggs & ham with fine herbs mixed with the yolk giving it a green hew and pickled carrots and crisp prosciutto, AKA "ham" on top ($6). Our favorite were the crispy amazingly flavorful braised rabbit filled taquitos with creme fraiche and a Mayan-style guacamole [...]

Stone Hearth in Westville

I joined a friend for a bite to eat at Stone Hearth Restaurant in Westville,  a new venture from the folks that own Delaney’s Bar & Grille, another Westville staple. Our friendly waitress poured me a glass of Brunn Gruner Veltliner, one of their featured wines. We ordered the bottle, instead of  the glass ($7). On the table was complimentary bread,  a house made focaccia with whole roasted garlic, topped with sea salt, and served with oil and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. The menu includes salads, personal pizzas and a kids menu. There is something for everyone, making the restaurant a nice choice for those dining with a group [...]

El Coyote Restaurant, Brookfield

On our way back from our visit to Coach Farm in Pine Plains, New York, we got hungry as we were driving by the Danbury area. I used my AroundMe app to locate a non-chain restaurant which is how we ended up at El Coyote in a strip mall on Federal Drive in Brookfield. We began with their house made salsa and warm fresh chips while looking at the menu and chitchatting with the employees. We followed their suggestion for the tableside Guacamole al Molcajete ($8) served with warm fresh tortillas. What's not to like about freshly made guacamole! By this time we were a bit full, and so decided [...]

Burritt Room + Tavern, San Francisco

Talk about eating and running! When I was indulging in a Sunday Supper on a Wednesday afternoon recently, Charlie Palmer mentioned his San Francisco-based tavern. He suggested I stop by when on the west coast the following week. We did so. We stopped in to the Burritt Room + Tavern on our way to the airport. Literally. We told executive chef Lucas Knox that we just wanted to experience a small sampling of his cooking in the hour we had before needing to SFO to catch our plane east. The table was soon filled with appetizers and salads. The lobster risotto ($22) with spring peas, pea tendrils and huge chunks [...]
