Caseus, New Haven

Cheese is the star on the menu at Caseus (pronounced KAY-see-us) fromageria and bistro. I met some friends there recently for dinner on "extreme spice night" and opted for the tear-evoking, searingly hot, ceviche of local scallops and red royal shrimp — made spicy from marinating the seafood and poblano sheep milk cheese in both ghost and habanero chili peppers ($21). It was attractively plated with housemade chili-lime popcorn and fennel fronds. We asked for some house bread 'n butter ($5) to accompany it, which came with some honey-nut peanut butter and raspberry jam. Their housemade jalapeno-spiced barbecue pork sausage over braised Napa cabbage, rainbow chard and carrots, topped with melted [...]

Le Pigeon, Portland

Knowing that Le Pigeon's Gabriel Rucker had won his second James Beard Award, I decided to sample his food when visiting Portand (OR) recently. In 2011, Rucker won the prize for Rising Star Chef of the Year. This year, he took home the prize for Best Chef Northwest. The welcoming hostess offered us each a glass of bubbly, the Crémant de Limoux Rosé, Dom. de Martinolles Languedoc ($13) as we sat outside on the bench in front of the small restaurant perusing the menu offerings. Lucky us, our table wasn't ready. Le Pigeon is very small space, offering mainly communal tables. I thought that off putting, but the good food [...]

The Lobster Roll Restaurant, Amagansett

On the south side of highway 27 along the Napeague strip, between Amagansett and Montauk, Long Island  is a roadside shack amid the sand dunes with a huge "LUNCH" sign. Be sure to stop. At the Lobster Roll Restaurant, you'll sit at umbrellaed picnic tables surrounded by gardens of colorful summer flowers and beach umbrellas. Their "Classic" lobster roll ($20.95) is not to be missed. It comes with large chunks of the crustacean combined with celery and a tad a mayo and served in a top-loading frankfurter roll and a 1/4-pound of their housemade creamy and vinegary cole slaw. For $3 additional you'll get crisp fries --  all with fast and [...]

Morton’s The Steakhouse, New World Trade Center Location

Morton's The Steakhouse reopened at the World Trade Center in early July after more than a decade's absence from the Downtown Manhattan neighborhood. Morton’s, which was originally located at 90 West Street and was lost during the attacks of 2001, is returning to the same block, directly across from the 9/11 Memorial, in the Club Quarters Hotel,. Morton’s The Steakhouse boasts 10,500 square feet with the bar area on the street level and the main dining room downstairs. With two private dining rooms seating anywhere from 10 to 80 guests, Morton’s is for any business meeting, family gathering or intimate dinner. ROÌA Restaurant and Cafe, New Haven

Our visit to sample Rioa (pronounced ROY-uh), the newly opened restaurant in the Taft Hotel formerly Hot Tomatoes, had an ominous beginning — the door to the restaurant was locked. We waited there with an employee also trying to get in for her first day of work. She finally found the cell number of the manager, who she called and came to unlock the door. Roia, named for the river that runs between France and Italy, offers fresh food with influences from both countries. As we considered the menu options, we ordered a bottle of Sancerre, Pascal, Jolivet '11 from the Loire Valley, west of the river. We [...]

Community Plate, McMinnville, OR

We stopped into Community Table in McMinnville for breakfast one morning. I had learned that owner Scott Cunningham offers fresh local ingredients so he can supporting area growers, farmers and artisans that chef Jesse Kincheloe turns into housemade offerings. It's the type of place where you order at the counter and wait for your name to be called. If desired, you can eat at communal tables to meet some locals. While awaiting your breakfast  — ordered either from the printed menu or the blackboard daily quiche or scramble special — you serve yourself the rich Stumptown coffee and gather your utensils. We opted for a breakfast burrito ($8) filled with pulled pork, [...]

Palmeira Brasil Re-Opens

After shopping downtown, a friend and I decided to pop into Palmeira Brasil on Orange Street for a cocktail and a snack. The restaurant opened  last year, closed within the year and re-opened a few months ago under the same name with new owners. The décor is a cool white with green accents and colorful wall murals. A separate room for private functions is available. As a complimentary happy hour appetizer, Palmeira offered spicy Brazilian wings with just the right amount of zing without being too spicy.  With that sipped  “The Salty Poodle” ($10), a pretty pink concoction of Lunazul Reposado Tequila, Velvet Falerum, triple sec, crème de cassis, fresh [...]

Sotto Sopra, Amagansett

The bustling new eatery Sotto Sopra occupied the space on Main Street in Amagansett, formerly held Exile. I was invited there recently to sample their cuisine of Italian specialties. Since the restaurant is from some of the people behind Bobby Van’s Steakhouse, you'll also find steak on the menu. To accompany our meal, we ordered a bottle of crisp Vermentinio, 6 Murga, Sardegna, Italy, 2011 ($52). A must have is the Robiola Crostini ($15), an Italian soft-ripened cheese made with varying proportions of cow's, goat's and sheep's milk piped onto crisp bread, accompanied by grilled figs, spiced walnuts and salad greens in a citrus vinaigrette. We decided to sample their [...]

Taverna Tony, Malibu

We stopped for a quiet lunch at Taverna Tony as our stomachs were growling after our visit to the Santa Monica farmer's market and our drive up the coast. It is right off the 101 with easy parking. I savored the perfectly grilled  Corfu-style baby octopus with olive oil, fresh lemon, Kalamata olives and grilled scallions ($17.95). So tender. Not to be missed. My friend enjoyed the Greek peasant salad ($14.95) with crisp lettuce, tomato wedges, cucumber chunks, scallion,  onions, bell peppers, chopped scallions, feta cheese, Kalamata olives all in a light dressing served on the side. Recommended for light al fresco dining. - bonnie Follow @BonnieBOTB Taverna Tony 23410 [...]
