I revisited Bistro Bordeaux as I have a family member in the area who likes this truly French café. We were there celebrating her birthday.
We started with salads. The one with endive contained apples, candied walnuts ($9.95) and the French cow’s milk cheese Fourme d’ Amber, all in an apple cider vinaigrette. Nice. The other was an interesting tri-color roasted beet salad that sat atop acorn squash puree, served with frisée and garnished with crispy lentils all in light white balsamic vinaigrette ($8.95). Also interesting.
Since this was a French cafe, we opted for their traditional coq au vin. It was fine, but nothing out of the ordinary. The chicken was braised in red wine, with bacon, roasted mushrooms, onions, carrot and oddly came topped with crispy shoestring potatoes ($20.95).
The Ris de Veau au Naturel — milk-fed sauteed sweetbreads — came served over a black truffle polenta. The waiter poured over the chanterelle mushroom natural jus after serving. Sadly the sweetbreads weren’t cooked through but my companion didn’t want to alert the waiter ($19.90, for a double appetizer portion).
What was delicious was the decadent terrine au chocolat noir – made with 70% dark chocolate, topped with fresh raspberry coulis ($7.95). Crème brulée fans won’t be disappointed in the creamy vanilla custard is topped with the crunchy caramelized sugar ($8) that cracks perfectly when you dig in. I recommend either.
Head to Bistro Bordeaux only if you’re in the neighborhood.
