“Please join us to experience new Birds Eye Steamfresh…” was all I needed to read before deciding to head into the big apple for their editor’s event. I’ve been a Steamfresh fan since first trying their products. (So much of a fan that we’ve written Bites on both the long grain rice and the veggies.)
The Birds Eye team held the event in the Glass House 21 on the top floor of the Chelsea Arts Tower (545 West 25th Street, NYC) with cocktails served on a small terrace overlooking the Hudson River. Quite nice, the heat wave had just broken.
These new complete meals for two cook in just 10 minutes in the microwave, producing ample portions for two. What I found most interesting is that Birds Eye designed these products with a clean label in mind. That means, according to brand manager Matt Mazzaferro, Birds Eye doesn’t include any ingredients on the Whole Foods list of the “banned” ones. (Whole Foods has a list of ingredients that they find unacceptable in food products. Kudos to Whole Foods for creating such a list — I also find these ingredients unacceptable!)
The luncheon consisted of samples of the six varieties of Meals for Two, with my two favorites the Asian Style Chicken Vegetables Medley (with 290 calories, only 6 grams fat, a whopping 10 milligrams fiber but too much sodium —1290 milligrams per serving) and the Sweet and Spicy Chicken (with 370 calories, 10 grams fat, 4 grams fiber and 930 milligrams sodium).
Meals for Two in six pasta-based varieties will be in supermarkets this October at $7.49 for the two-portion 24-ounce package.
We must be a trial market in Cincinnati as they were at my grocery store this weekend. I tried the Asian Style Chicken Vegetable Medley you mentioned because of the fat content and was very pleased! Much better than the old kinds you have to make in a pan that always burn and it was spicy and really tasty and filling! Had 1/2 last night for dinner and 1/2 today for lunch!
I’m checking with Birds Eye to see where else their meals for two are in test markets. Glad you also liked the Asian Style one. Loved all the veggies in it.
Dear Heather,
On behalf of Birds Eye Steamfresh, we are very glad to hear you enjoyed our new Steamfresh Meals for Two and we appreciate your feedback – keep it coming! To answer your question, Cincinnati is not a test market. Each store shelves their products at different times, which makes it difficult to determine which stores the meals will appear in first. I can tell you that the meals will be available nationwide in October, but as you know, they are starting to appear on shelves now at some stores. I’m glad you were able to be one of the first to try our new meals!
If you have any other questions about the new product, let us know. We love hearing your feedback and hope you’ll keep spreading the goodness of steam!
Tried the italian chicken one last night – very very good! And filling!
[…] summer I told you about Birds Eye’s new Steamfresh Meals for Two — entrees that steam in about 10 minutes in the microwave. These dinners are now available in […]
Just had the shrimp alfredo meal for two. So, here are my pros and cons. Very easy preparation, fast, not much to it and extremely easy cleanup. I cooked for one and found the quality just as good the next night after reheating. However I have to wonder that if 2 people were sharing this meal would there be a fight over the shrimp. This is rather a large amount of pasta and not enough shrimp to share. Also I think 2 people would be fighting over the sauce as I didn’t even find the sauce quantity enough for one person. The vegetables were flavorful as well as the sauce, the shrimp could use some light spices. The value of the product is excellent as I made a salad each night so when you get down to price I had 2 good meals for under $4.00. I will buy again and next time I will add some basil, peppercorn and a tiny amount of powdered garlic to make the shrimp more appealing.
I just tried the Birds Eye meals for two.I had the sweet and spicy chicken and it was delightful!! I would like to try some of the other verities too. Could send me some coupons on these items?
I have tried the steamed vegetables and really enjoyed them.
Keep up the good work,Birds Eye.
I purchased the birds eye steamfresh meals for two
(Shrimp Alfredo) It was horrible. One bite was all I could take, had to dispose of it could not stand the odor or taste. I will never purchase another of your meals. I purchased it at the Vons in San Diego. I have proof of the purchase
I was so disappointed…

I found Steamfresh in the Publix store here in Lake Worth, Florida, just last week for the first time. I thought maybe I just had never seen them before. These are the best frozen dinner packages for two that I have ever eaten. It takes like I made it myself, really!! The seasonings are perfect not too much of anything, and enough for two people! I just read you had a sweepsteaks! Wish I had known!
Keep these dinners coming, any new and upcoming ones??,kudos to you!
I love the Bird’s eye meals for 2. My favorites are the italian chicken and the shrimp alfredo. The taste are great, the quantity and quality are perfect and I do agree that there could be more shrimp in the shrimp alfredo, but I find the taste of the shrimp good, I think too much spices ruin shrimp, they have a wonderful flavor without a lot of help.
Overall great tase, filling and fair pricing make this a winner at our house.

I’m a college student and any healthy alternative to cafeteria food that I can make in a microwave without a seperate container to clean up is AMAZING!!!! I havn’t been able to find them in stores yet but thats mainly because I’ve been using the peapod service for delivery. I would love to see peapod carrying these meals for 2. There should be a site where people can enter their zipcode and find the stores that carry so you dont have to individually responde to everyone. Mines 01609 Can’t wait to try!

Hi there! I looooooove the Birds Eye Foods Products! Not only are they delicious, but also a major time saver! Now, I have sort of an odd question, but you seem to be on top of everything Birds Eye, so I hope you can help. I have an elderly family member whom lives in Marlin, Texas. It is a very small, kind of remote town, and he has reached a stage in his life where he can now longer drive to the store for groceries. He relies on others for delivery, but to be honest, that doesn’t guarantee him the best diet. Is there a service I can work with within the Birds Eye family or perhaps a grocery delivery service out there that would be willing to deliver prepaid orders or certain products on a weekly or even monthly basis? Please let me know any suggestions you have. I live in New Hampshire myself, otherwise this question would be irrelevant. Thanks again!
Kristal, I’d suggest googling “delivered groceries + Marlin, TX” as I did – and you’ll come up with a number of options for someone to deliver food to your elderly family member.
My wife and I (both in our 80’s ) have tried and enjoyed several of the varieties and really enjoyed them. I would really appreciate some coupons so that we may enjoy them more often,
Thank You
Robert, you can take a chance to win those coupons — and a microwave — in our marketplace. Just click the Birds Eye logo and enter the monthly contest! You must be logged in, and a registered user, to do so.
My husband & I are both handicaped & we find easy to put it the microwave & we have a meal.
I am absolutely in love with birdseye food product! I especially enjoy the Viola meals and Steamfresh meals for one or two. I recommend them to others all the time, especially elderly who enjoy a good “home cooked” meal but can’t really do it anymore. They all taste so healthy and fresh. Recently I noticed that my supermarket has discontinued the Steamfresh fish and shrimp meals. I bought as many as I could to stock up but I am becoming unable to find them. I checked birdseye’s website and they don’t seem to be making them anymore????? Oh the heartbreak! Please tell me this is not true and I can find them somewhere. I’m at 15601. Please help.
I am in the same boat as Karen Geselman (see above) – I too really liked these meals but my local grocery no longer has them. I tried a different brand this week – and it was only “okay” – not nearly as good as the Birdseye. I have friends who feel the same way and really disappointed. Are they really no longer available?
(I’m at 33411)
Does anyone know if the plastic is “safe” to microwave. Does it contain any pba’s or release chemicals that are harmful? Thanks.
Hi Jslamont, this is Lynn from Birds Eye.
Thank you very much for your inquiry. Birds Eye Steamfresh packaging was specially designed to cook vegetables and meats to perfection in the microwave. Please be assured that it does not contain BPA.
We hope you enjoy the wide variety of delicious Birds Eye Steamfresh vegetables – you can see all of them at BirdsEyeSteamfresh.com. If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to contact us at 1-800-563-1786
Please help! I have been trying to find the steamfresh meals for two here in New Orleans,LA. I tried the asian medley with the lo mein noodles and fell in love. I purchased them from Walmart in the later months of 2010 and I haven’t been able to find them since. I’ve tried other grocers and I can’t find them anywhere. Was this a test market? It was a big disappointment to find something you really enjoyed eating and then to be let down because the grocers here don’t carry them anymore. If there is any way you could help me locate them here it would be greatly appreciated.
I can no longer find the Steamfresh meals for two in either Safeway or Fred Myers here in Medford, OR. We made
those meals our Sunday noon meals, and all of a sudden,
all we can find here are your Steamfresh vegetables.
Why?

Isn’t it interesting how many people tried these and LOVED them? I can’t help but wonder why they suddenly disappeared. I personally introduced some of my friends to them and every single one became an instant fan. These meals were SO far above most of the other frozen dinner offerings – you’d think that Birds’ Eye would listen to us consumers! Go figure.
Hello Alleyne, this is Kathy from Birds Eye. I’m sorry to say that we have discontinued our Steamfresh Meals. But the great news is that we have a comparable meal with our Birds Eye Voila line. We have everything from Shrimp Scampi to Three Cheese Chicken! The following stores in your area have the Birds Eye Voila meals:
Safeway Store

Albertsons Store

Hi Kathy from Birdseye! Thank you for finally answering our burning question on what has happened to our beloved Steamfresh Meals. I will say I do buy and enjoy the Viola meals however they take more time to prepare and do not come with the delicious fresh fish flavors that the Steamfresh did. I find that with my busy lifestyle the Steamfresh meals worked great (especially during lent) because they were easily prepared and healthy. Unfortunately, I find that due to time constraints I don’t end up making the Viola meals and they sit in my freezer longer. But thank you for making them. They are wonderful too. I hope at some point Birseye changes their mind and brings back the Steamfresh Meals. We really miss them! Thank you for your consideration.
I totally agree with Karen and she puts it better than I can. I too have bought and used the Voila meals but they simply ARE NOT AS GOOD. In the Steamfresh, the vegetables tasted as if they’d been plucked from the garden and freshly cooked. Please – Mr. Birds Eye – do reconsider!
