After we went to different matinees, we met for dinner at Johnathan Waxman’s Barbuto on the corner of Horatio and West Street in the West Village, just a 2-minute walk from Little Island. There, we saw a full-length premiere from Twyla Tharp featuring live music by T Bone Burnett and David Mansfield.

I had seen Breaking the Story, a play that didn’t get good reviews yet had a magnificent performance by Maggie Siff. They also saw the powerful, must-see Mother Play by Paula Vogel, starring Jessica Lange, Celia Keenan-Bolger, and Jim Parsons, which I had already seen.

Dinner started with their Hannah pizza with burrata, fontina and Parmesan on tomato ragu drizzled with basil oil ($26).

We also shared their shaved raw asparagus salad with thinly sliced carrots and watermelon radishes drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with pecorino ($21) and their kale salad in an anchovy vinaigrette topped with pecorino, breadcrumbs ($22).

Three of us ordered the night’s soft-shelled crab special ($36), which was sadly overfried, as were the JW potatoes ($14), making the spuds almost inedible.

The JW Pollo al Forno is a much better selection, tender chicken topped with salsa verde ($32) and bok choy in a chili compound butter ($14).

We had no room or time for dessert as we didn’t want to miss any of the magical Twyla Sharp performances on Little Island.
