O Balsamic Vinegar Trio

We've written about the O lines of Oils & Vinegars.. In a word, they're fantastic! The O Balsamic Vinegar Trio recently won the Gold Medal 'Best Food Gift' at the Fancy Food Show and I thought I would give it its due. The set includes three of the most interesting and flavorful from the O lines: the O Port Balsamic Vinegar, O White Balsamic Vinegar & O California Balsamic Vinegar. It really is a handsome gift pack, perfect for any passionate home chef. The O vinegars are true craftsmanship, hand-made in Sonoma and oak-aged in small batches. These are less like vinegars and more like fine wines. You'll find notes [...]

The Spife – The kiwi’s met its mongoose!

So you always wondered what happened when the dish ran away with the spoon, right? Ok, well maybe it's not the child of this star-crossed pair, but say hello to the Spife anyway.. Spifes (yes, it's a spoon/knife) are being handed out to kiwi-fruit lovers everywhere. This tool is specially crafted and perfectly designed to slice open a kiwi and allow you to eat it, all with one utensil! The kiwi is an often overlooked fruit. Most people don't realize that this small but mighty fruit packs more essential nutrients, bite for bite, than the 27 most popular fruits (apples, oranges, plums, bananas, etc, etc).  A Rutgers University study concluded [...]

Pirate’s Booty – Healthier Lunchbox Additions

What's better than plunder? Pirate’s Booty... If you're unfamiliar with this snack food (which I still think Trader Joe's should carry, c'mon - perfect fit!), Pirate's Booty is a delectably crunchy, baked snack made from all-natural ingredients; it is gluten and trans-fat free (two rarities in snack food land). It's really one of the 'better-for-you' snack foods around. Pirate's Booty was actually developed by a commodities trader named Robert Ehrlich who would watch an endless parade of his colleagues purchasing cheese puffs at the local delis. His distaste for the artificial ingredients he watched being consumed led him to use only natural ingredients in his food; creating a healthier alternative [...]

PureVia Sweetner – Stevia?

Ok, so I'm usually the first one to preach against artificial sweeteners, and that's why I'm taking the opportunity today to introduce you to a non-artificial sweetener, this is an all-natural product and I'll give it its due. I'm a brown cane sugar man myself, but to each their own... some of us don't want any calories in that morning coffee, so here you go! So, what is PureVia? Well, it's a sweetener made by Whole Earth Sweetener Co, but that doesn't really help, does it? PureVia is a sweetener that is based on the Stevia plant (Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni). This leafy green plant is member of the Chrysanthemum family [...]

The 100-mile Menu

In July, The Plaza Hotel (in New York) unveiled a new signature drink, the POMONA. The drink was created to further promote The Plaza's '100-Mile Menu'. The POMONA is a locavore creation; made only from ingredients hailing from the 100-mile area surrounding New York City. The cocktail includes American Fruits' Black Currant Cordial, Lieb Family Cellars Blanc de Blanc, and locally produced honey. The signature drink was fittingly named the POMONA for the Roman goddess of abundance and orchards. A statue of POMONA actually adorns the fountain outside The Plaza's main entrance. The concept of the 100-Mile Menu is a culinary movement that marries seasonal fare with elegant style. It's [...]

Man on the Moon Commemorative Cheese

I mean, really? It's just too funny not to post! So, apparently the first man on the moon is going to be commemorated in cheese! July 20, 2009 marks 40 years since man first realized the dream of landing on the moon. Although the traditional 40th anniversary gift is ruby, Sarah Kauffman, the “Cheese Lady,” is commemorating the event in true “moon” form – with cheese! (What else?!) Kaufmann will be carving a life-size astronaut out of 1,800 lbs of Wisconsin white cheddar. Sarah began her carving on July 17 at a local Kroger supermarket in Saint Marys, Ohio. Customers were invited to stop by the store, watch the carving, [...]

A River of Waste: The Real Food Inc.

The theatrical release of Food, Inc. has certainly got a lot of people talking. It is in this line of thinking that Cinema Libre Studios has released their own eye-opening documentary about the environmental hazards of our modern meat and poultry production farms. The film, entitled A River of Waste: The Hazardous Truth about Factory Farms, delves deeply into the subject of CAFOs (Confined Animal Feeding Operations) in its examination of our food system. These factory farms are at the center of the maelstrom, getting much of the attention for many legislative campaigns fighting against practices like  animal cruelty, environmental violations and the depletion of natural resources. The film features [...]

Food Should Taste Good, still…

Just a quick update on what's going on from the folks over at Food Should Taste Good. Well, they still believe 'it', and they continue to roll out the flavors. I recently got the opportunity to try a few of the newer tastes that should be good, and was more than pleasantly surprised. The Yellow Corn tortilla chips were very good, hearty, crunch, and not overly salty. I dove right into a bag and made them stand up against a hearty black bean & corn salsa; test passed! I moved on to the Lime, and then quickly past it (ok, I just don't like the whole hint of lime phase [...]

Hot Chocolate in a Bag!

If you were not aware, the Spanish are known to be serious lovers of chocolate ever since its introduction to Europe from the New World in the 1500s. The Spanish, like Americans, drink a lot of hot chocolate... but theirs is a very different concoction from ours. For any readers that might have been to Angelina's (Parisian chocolotier), you might know a thing or two about rich chocolate drinks... and this is one that same plane! If the only hot chocolate you’ve ever had had been made with powdered envelopes, you won’t even recognize this incredibly rich drink. Spanish hot chocolate is traditionally made from a actual bar of chocolate, [...]

Matcha: Green Tea Essence

Green tea.. it just might be the next "it" ingredient. Many people are starting to realize the incredible flavor of green tea.. heck, Snapple and Arizona are even on board with commercial production! Though many have sampled, not many yet realize the incredible health benefits (including cancer-fighting capabilities) that green tea has. And then there is matcha... Matcha is powdered green tea (generally imported from Japan) that can be added to many types of foods and beverages -- everything from smoothies, to baked goods, to pasta salad, fish and eggs. Matcha is the newest way to reap the powerful health benefits of green tea. Though new to the United States, [...]

Kefir: 2000 Year Old Milk

Kefir is becoming popular, well.. at least more popular than it used to be! Modern drinkers know Kefir as a healthy, nourishing, drink.. almost as a 'yogurt shake'. The drink is actually a fermented milk drink that originated in the Caucasus region of Europe over 2000 years ago; prepared by inoculating milk (cow, goat, sheep or even soy) with 'kefir grains' (a combination of bacteria and yeasts in a matrix of proteins, lipids, and sugars). Sound complicated? Yeah, I thought so too.. Much more important than the chemistry lesson it would take to understand the nuts and bolts of Kefir, is the nutritional value This drink, a staple in much [...]

Identity Crisis: Cachaça

Ok.. So sorry for the delay in this reporting, my timing is a bit off as you'll see. I unfortunately caught this story too late to get everyone out on the streets, but maybe you can take up the cause next year. This past month a special date was recognized, that is at least amongst a few hardcore spirit supporters. June 12th apparently marks the anniversary of a historic liquor tragedy, committed 265 years ago. In 1744, the Portuguese Crown declared that the production, distribution, and sale of Cachaça, Brazil’s noble spirit, would be illegal within the Colony of Brazil. Fortunately for us all, the Brazilian people rebelled and the [...]

I heard a very interesting announcement recently about the launch of Estrella Damm INEDIT, a beer specifically created for food pairings. This artisinal beverage is crafted by Ferran Adrià & Juli Soler (elBulli chef & sommelier) and Estrella Damm, the ubiquitous brewer of Barcelona. How can you argue with this product!? This incredible beer is already highly lauded within talented circles of the culinary community. Barber was recently awarded Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World and named the nation’s Top Chef by the James Beard Foundation. [...]
