125 Best Packaged Foods

(For Women)... I had posted about the 125 Best Foods for Men a while back, when Men's Health originally published their list, as it had a good number of Bite of the Best notables within (Swanson Organic Chicken Broth, Sabra hummus, McCann’s steel cut oat, Dr. Krackers Classic 3-seed Crackers, Food Should Taste Good Sweet Potato Tortilla Chips, Uncle Bens Whole Grain Brown Rice, Alfresco Chicken Sausage….. just to name a few). Well, Women's Health recently came out with their parallel list (it's a Title 9 thing), so I thought I'd share some of our overlaps again.. You can see the full listing of product selections here. Kashi was a [...]

Recessionary Sandwiches

The “lunch wars” are taking off. Everyone is fighting for your newly reduced lunch budget. Hey, we're all tightening our belts, so who wants to have to loosen it at the same time (stay off the fast food burgers!)? There are a number of large chain restaurants (and thankfully smaller mom/pop restaurants) that have been rolling out the specials, trying to get us to still eat out in these harder times. Quiznos has fired the latest shot in the ongoing lunch saga, stepping all over Subway's $5 footlong promotion with the introduction of two different types of subs, both under $5!! Get ready for the Toasty Bullet & Toasty Torpedo [...]

CorningWare National Recipe Contest

Just one month remains to enter recipes into the CorningWare SimplyLite National Recipe Contest. The contest kicked off in August,  inviting any/all home cooks (18 years and older, sorry child prodigies) to submit original recipes for baked goods, either savory or sweet. The twist of it is that the baked goods need to be "lite". The recipe has to make a good faith effort to use ingredients that are low in fat and calories. The best part is, the grand prize recipe wins $5,000! The contest runs through December 31, with a bake-off planned for early January at the Institute of Culinary Education (New York) to help choose the grand [...]

IKEA FUD

Do I have to put my sandwich together myself? Will I need allen wrenches? IKEA offers food, lots of food actually. You may not have known this, but they've been doing it for a long time. IKEA, randomly, is the only place in the United States where you can purchase Daim candies (a European fave), but the furniture company is now really trying to promote their foods. As school gets back into the swing of things, IKEA wants you to know that they offer everything from lunch box essentials to dinners on the run. Oh yes, there is an IKEA Swedish Food Market. It's not just for piecemeal furniture anymore. [...]

Plush Puffs Marshmallows

It's fire season!! I know this doesn't hold true for everyone around the world (or even around the country), but the onset of fall means that it's time for fireplaces, fire-pits, bonfires, warmth from flame... and inevitably roasted marshmallows! So, this year I've putting thoughts of the Stay-Puff marshmallow man out of my head and focusing on Plush Puffs. Yes, Plush Puffs... they're handmade, all natural, low-fat intensely flavored, gourmet marshmallows, and they are truly wonderful! Everyone loves marshmallows (hey, they're just sugar!). Who can argue with such a light, fluffy, sticky, gooey goodness... especially when skewered and roasted to perfection! Plush Puffs gourmet marshmallows are made the old fashioned [...]

Smartfood Popcorn Clusters

I do love Smartfood, something about air-popped popcorn, lightly dusted with that cheese... I could eat bags of it! I've talked about the benefits of popcorn before, it's actually not bad for you and is even a good source of fiber.. an enormously healthier alternative to potato chips and other friend snacks. Smartfood Popcorn Clusters are another interesting introduction to the snack food world – a crunchy and mildly nutritious treat from snack-makers Frito-Lay. There are three flavors to choose from, all of which intersting and a bit addictive – Cranberry Almond, Honey Multigrain and Chocolate Cookie Caramel Pecan. Frito-Lay touts these pouches as a 'better-for-you' snack, and they are [...]

Grill Daddy

I know, it's a little late for BBQ season, but I recently fired up my grill to make a few grilled pizzas, and I got the chance to use a newer product to the backyard chef's arsenal. The Grill Daddy is a grill brush with a twist. The brush holds water, that is released slowly during cleaning. The result is one of the most unique grill cleaning tools I've ever seen;  sleek and ultra lightweight, the Grill Daddy is designed perfectly to thoroughly and quickly steam-clean any grill. The Grill Daddy is available in three styles, a smaller travel size Grill Daddy (perfect for tailgating or beach cookouts), a larger [...]

$1 Spices…

It's not a thimble full of saffron, I'll tell you that! The country is faced with tightening wallets everywhere. Food lovers are having to either forgo their gourmet cravings altogether or come up with creative ways to afford them (Oh god, where is my foie gras in a can?!). Culinary assistance without breaking the bank, this is what we're all asking for. I give credit to Aromatica Organics’ for their new line of Spice It Now! packets, seeing the need for a different way to offer value. Aromatica packets provide a cost-effective means to add flavor and spice, one meal at a time. A single 'portion pack' is perfect for [...]

Bubble Chocolate

I love any announcement that notes a 'global phenomenon'. Apparently, what has long been known (and revered) as Aerated Chocolate in the rest of the World, is now being introduced in the United States as 'Bubble Chocolate'. It appears that many of the other 5 billion people out there have had some form of aerated chocolate bar as part of their go-to candy selections for some time. Now the U.S. has our own version, Bubble Chocolate. Mikes Lemonade Goes Pink

There's a new limited edition flavor from Mike's Hard Lemonade that launched during the Fall.  The company introduced Mike's hard pink lemonade to mark the celebration of its 10th anniversary.  Mike's hard pink lemonade  seasonal flavor is available through the end of October, so now's your last chance to pick some up. I'm usually not the biggest fan of hard lemonade in general, though I used to enjoy a hard cider here and there (even made some hard cider recently for a fall-themed dinner party), but I felt I wanted to share the message about Mike's Pink Lemonade because the new flavor also carries a breast cancer awareness message (a [...]

Another 50 Best, Another local success

Everyone has their idea of what the best are... It doesn't even matter the subject is, everyone has their own opinions. Give me the top-10 restaurants in your city, now your state, now your country, now the world. Did any of the selections from your first list make it to your last list? Well, those of us from New Haven can say so, at least when quoting the London-based, Guardian Newspaper's latest 'The 50 best things to eat in the world' article. What a statement by the way... The 50 BEST things to eat, in the WORLD! When I first saw this, I just knew I had to give it [...]

A Kinder Treat…

But beware of potential tricks... Halloween is fast approaching and the candy blitzkreig has already begun. Every candy producer worth its salt are vying for those big candy-dollars, and they want to know; what are you going to give out this year? Bite-sized Snickers? Reeses Peanut Butter Cups? Fun-sized Twix? Skittles? M&M's? Twizzlers? The list of sweet options goes on for miles, with the extremes of capitalist industriousness turning treat-or-treater's candy bags into a truly dizzying array of colors and flavors. Insanewiches

I am a sandwich lover... A food lover most importantly, but a sandwich lover most definitely. Most meals are not a meal for me without bread anyway, so why not just wrap it around my food and pick the whole thing up I say? Though we cover a lot of food products and food news at Bite of the Best, we certainly don't give sandwiches the level of attention of some other food sites. As I do love to share all bits of interesting food info, I wanted to let you know about a great blog I recently came across, Insanewiches.com. It was a picture of an intricately put together [...]

Klondikier Bars…

Though the question has long been, 'What would you do for a Klondike Bar?'... A more difficult question for the ice cream manufacturer is really, what more can you do to a Klondike bar? The chocolate-dipped, vanilla ice cream bar remains an iconic American dessert, its advertising as deeply ingrained in our collective pop-culture as any, but what improvements have we really seen since this treats inception in the early 1920's? Over the years, they've added some krispies, they've doubled and even tripled the chocolate.. but what have you done for me lately Klondike? In any competitive market, it is generally thought that you must continually innovate to keep people's [...]

Fever Stimulation Beverage

Yes, I said 'Stimulation Beverage'. I'm a bit confused too... The newest crazy drink to hit the market is Fever. Yes, Fever. My vote for 'Nausea' apparently didn't go over well with test audiences. I kid, I've not even tried this one yet, but had to share a bit, as its description caught me as unique. I will just have to give it straight from the horse's mouth on this one. Fever is an "all-natural, flavor-packed beverage that provides a sense of euphoria and stimulates body wellness". Well damn, that sounds like quite a dramatic beverage, though I might point out that those were the same medicinal qualities doctors first [...]

Oscar Mayer Weinermobile

Oh.. I wish I were an Oscar Mayer weiner.. that is what I truly wish to be.. cause if I were an Oscar Mayer weiner, everyone would be in love with me... C'mon.. You all know the lyrics. I know you're humming along to yourself right now. If you're not, click on this link and you'll likely be soon. Classic Americana... I recently got invited for a ride on the weinermobile..  It was heart-breaking, but I couldn't make it on this fantastic voyage. I only share this thought to bring a smile, thinking about riding around in a huge hot dog car that continuously plays the Oscar Mayer Weiner song [...]

New Flavors, Old Favorite: Cape Cod

The love affair with the potato chip continues. Cape Cod chips have always been a favorite of mine. They were one of the original 'kettle chips', before kettle chips were fashionable. I can still remember their trademark white bag, an accompaniment for so many bag lunches, picnics and car-rides. Cape Cod was certainly a chip of choice in our household. A new flavor, and more importantly some brand new popcorn products, have recently come from Cape Cod, and they're worth a mention. I recently had the opportunity to sample the newest chip, Parmesan & Roasted Garlic. I have to say that it was a bit much for me, the garlic [...]

Table ONE – Hawaiian Dining

Another restaurant read that was too inspiring to keep to myself. I love the concept of dining a bit too much at times. A good restaurant review or announcement will keep me as glued to the page as a good novel... and a novel has yet to make me salivate... Orchid surrounded tasting menus, it's bordering on regal... Halekulani is an iconic Hawaiian luxury hotel, long celebrated for its award-winning cuisine. The hotel recently announced a new addition to their already one-of-a-kind dining experience. TABLE ONE is a restaurant where diners sit, surrounded by exotic orchids and overlooking open-air panoramic views of  Waikiki Beach. TABLE ONE features the culinary prowess [...]

LA Edition: Los Cabos Culinarios

I was reading recently about the new menus at The Westin Resort in Los Cabos.. The piece got me dreaming a bit.. Just thinking about great food in beautiful surroundings made me smile for no other reason. Just thought I'd share some of my read... The Westin announced its latest seasonal menus and offerings at its two restaurants, La Cascada and La Playa, bringing a plethora of fresh new items for guests to enjoy. At La Cascada Restaurant, an elaborate Sunday brunch, either indoors or outdoors in the ocean breeze, offers guests a buffet of fresh seafood... spinach stuffed and puff pastry wrapped Canadian salmon fillet... antipasti and salads such [...]

Explorer’s Bounty Tribal Stone Crackers

Explorer’s Bounty Tribal Stone Crackers: 100% Organic Yuca Infusing Snacks A new organic snack is making it's way onto (specialty) supermarket shelves near you. Explorer’s Bounty announced the debut of their new Tribal Stone Crackers. Launched in July 2009, Tribal Stone Crackers are made from Rainforest Alliance Certified Yuca. The crackers are 100% certified organic with no added sweeteners. Additionally, they are gluten free, allergen and fat free and vegan friendly. I like to share a lot of healthier snack [...]
