Buffalo Chicken Dip

Though my company's office parties have definitely provided more than a few funny stories over the years, there is one thing in particular that I will always remember from one year's party. Or, more specifically, something that I will never let the office forget A colleague of mine, Alberta, brought her contribution to the annual holiday party.. and appetizer.. buffalo chicken dip. Now, apparently this dish is popular in certain circles, but to my knowledge at that time, is was something completely new! Buffalo chicken dip, if you haven't already guessed, is a dip that is made from (essentially) ground up buffalo chicken. It is divine, it is to die [...]

Coca Cocktails

We all know the crazy history.. The world's most revered soft drink, the famed international icon, the word synonymous with 'soda'... Coca Cola began with actual cocaine as an ingredient. Though there is no longer any coke in Coke, you'd be surprised where you can find coca nowadays. It is certainly true that the coca leaf has had a long and mottled history, dating back thousands of years. The plant has been used by Bolivian farmers and misused by almost everybody else... hey, the Coca Leaf will always attract controversy. It's the newest controversial player to toss their hat in the ring that is so darn interesting. Agwa de Bolivia [...]

Worst Pizza

I'm all about sharing a good resource when I find one. I never used to understand all the discussion over pizza. There were so many blogs dedicated to the best pizza places, where to find a good slice, etc. It was all foreign to me. I had the luxury of growing up in an area of the country (New Haven) that is considered to be a pizza mecca. All our pizza places were good, heck.. there wasn't a Pizza Hut or Dominoes that would even set foot in our town, it was a waste of everyone's time. New Haven has a plethora of honorable mentions on any 'top pizza' list, [...]

Good Housekeeping, Good Food

Good Housekeeping, the brand that has been delivering information and advice to readers for nearly 125 years has recently launched the Good Food pantry collection. A line of pantry products that is being produced by Napa Valley company, Tulocay & Co. The collection is currently available in supermarkets around the country including: Stop & Shop, Giant Eagle, Price Chopper and HyVee. The Good Food pantry collection features a wide range of all-natural products, making it easier for time-pressed home cooks to create healthy, affordable meals. As a nice compliment, the Good Food product labels feature a โ€œ30 minutes or lessโ€ recipe while pointing out simple usage suggestions and health benefits. [...]

Kitchen Challenge: Baked Alaska

There are certain dishes that I've just never gone near. It's not that I won't eat them (I'll eat anything), it's that I'm not going to try and make it myself. Blowfish, for example.. if cut incorrectly, can kill you... so I'll leave dishes with that ingredient to the trained chefs. My home kitchen is a place for many experiments, but some creations just seem either to dangerous or like too much work! For me, desserts in general always seem a daunting task. There's so much mixing and measuring, kneading and rolling, crimping and icing. It can be such a tiring endeavor, that I often leave it to a restaurant's [...]

Iphone Beer App

I always thought apps and beer went great together! I mean, give me mussels and beer, charcuterie and beer, cheese and beer, heck.. beer and pretzels! Oh how things change, even words change. The word app could not be mistaken for anything but an appetizer in years past, but now it's a whole new ballgame. An app now refers to an 'application', a program that runs on any one of the countless devices you likely have with you right now. Stella Artois has recently launched their own app for the iphone. Le Bar Guide helps beer connoisseurs locate a perfectly poured glass of Belgian beer (specifically, Stella). The app is [...]

Gourmรจ Mist

I love olive oils, and I love inventive packaging. I had a friend that once (successfully) patented a special kind of beer can. His can would pour faster because of a special valve that opened when opening the lid (allowing a drinker to chug faster). Inventive packaging for him meant a better user experience, not just a fancy bow. With this (albeit odd) story in mind, I was very excited when I came across the new olive oil bottles from Gourmรจ Mist. Gourmรจ Mist is inventive packaging to the next level; an environmentally friendly, continuous mist spray bottle. This is something new, something different. Hey, global warming, right? We don't [...]

Wolfgang Candies

Sometimes you see a picture of food and you know you just have to have it... Heck, this is what most of the fast-food companies are thinking whenever they advertise, none of the food actually looks like that! But it looks so good in the picture, and we're sold. Well, sometimes the food does actually look just like the picture.. and it happened to me recently. I had never heard of Wolfgang Candies when I got an email about their line of all-natural fruit center candies, though I was beyond intrigued by the picture of the gooey raspberry bon-bon. Though a bit of a 'boutique' brand, Wolfgang's line of candies [...]

Agave Syrup Winter Cocktails

Sweet treats don't always have to have so much sugar. Agave has been around for thousands of years, but its been just recently that Americans have really started taking advantage of this plant. OK, you're right, we have been drinking tequila for many years, that is true... but it's the sweeter side of Agave that many people are now discovering. Agave nectar is produced from the juice of the Agave plant; filtered, then heated, the juice is concentrated into a syrup-like liquid resembling a watery honey. The syrup can be used as a very simple substitute for any sugar addition. There are a number of agave syrups out there (Xagave [...]

Top 10 Food Trends of 2010

The Food Channel (I think the proverbial red-headed step child to the Food Network) has just released their top 10 food trends for 2010. Hey, I like top 10 lists, and I'm excited that people are again getting excited about food trends and food in general. It's a new year!... So here you go, the Top 10 list, basically reproduced here for your reading pleasure... 10. Keeping it Real In a back-to-basics economy it is natural to return to basic ingredients. This isnโ€™t about retro, or comfort food, or even cost. Itโ€™s about determining the essentials and stocking your pantry accordingly. It is about pure, simple, clean and sustainable. It [...]

Ganja Gourmet

We've sampled a lot of interesting products on Bite of the Best, but some new ingredients I never thought I'd see on the national food stage. While the debate about the uses and safety of marijuana will likely continue to rage on in the United States for the rest of foreseeable time, the situation does seem to be continually changing. Though the U.S. has long considered the plant illegal, nowadays, more and more states are flirting with the idea of decriminalizing 'medicinal marijuana'. The whole system is quite confusing to be frank; it seems a convoluted maze of local, state and federal laws and authorities, each contradicting the other. But, [...]

Restaurant Resolutions…

It's officially the new year. It hasn't just started, it's almost February... have you made any headway on your new year's resolutions? Was it to get back in the gym? To lay off dessert? To spend more time with the family? Heck, maybe it was just to be a better person... There are a number of great tasks you could have set for yourself, but if you were a restaurant, you'd only have one new year's resolution for 2010... get some people in the seats this year! 2009 was a very bad year for the world's economy in general. It's hard to say who had it worse, and why bother [...]

Dual Flow Spouts

What's better than one? Two, clearly (at least that's what years of informercials have taught me). I'm a big fan of pour spouts, those toppers to bottles that allow you to control the flow of your pour. You've likely most often seen them sticking out of the end of a liquor bottle at the bar, but there are a few additional uses I assure you. In the kitchen, I find I am using a pour spout most often with my oil and vinegar. Olive oil seems to be added to almost everything I prepare, so an easy-access pour is a must. Though most of my oils (I keep at least [...]

Regift the Fruitcake

I hope this concept is still going well past the holidays. Fruitcake typically doesn't make it to the top of anyone's holiday wish list.ย  This year, that changed as celebrity ambassadors and everyday people (that's the 'rest of us') came together to make sureย  fruitcake became this year's holiday hero by raising money for 25 major charities. Through PayPal's "Regift the Fruitcake" campaign, a virtual fruitcake is being passed around online (using facebook) in the name of charity. It's kind of like the 'matrix. To help fruitcakes make an impact, it's easy as: 1. MAKE: Log on to create a fruitcake on behalf of a featured charity. 2. DONATE: Make [...]

Candy Cane Brownies

I hope I never see it all... It's just such a pleasure to come across new things. The Charleston Cookie Company is a new thing to me, and it's a pleasure as well. Being that they're in my 'neighborhood'. I got very excited when I was recently introduced to their scrumptious holiday offerings, candy cane brownies accompanied by white chocolate cranberry cookies. There was an overwhelming array of sweets, so I needed help. Treats, to the office! My colleagues help comes easily when sweets are involved. Try a cookie I say.. It'll only cost you your opinion. I bring my research directly to the people! The cookies are quite good, [...]

Pomegranate Salsa

During the summer, we posted a small Bite of the Rest listing, noting the newest line of Mrs. Renfro's salsa varieties to hit the market: Pineapple, Pomegranate & Tequila. Bite of the Rest is not a section of the website where we share opinions, as these are products we haven't actually tried yet, but want to share with our readers anyway (why hoard knowledge we always say). As is, I finally had the opportunity to try these wonderfully different sauces and just had to do a TidBite about them, one in particular... These are really unique! I've sampled a number of fruit salsas in my life (peaches, mangoes, oranges, etc), [...]

Beer Ponderings…

Beer... a beverage that is universally appreciated at almost all levels of society. Though likely the most consumed alcoholic beverage on the planet (at least by volume - this turned out to be a tough statistic to nail down, even on wikipedia, the best definitive answer I could find was here, not exactly science!), beer is still an under appreciated product when it comes to foodies. I've never met anyone who didn't enjoy a nice cold beer with a cheeseburger (I've obviously never met a non-drinker or a vegetarian in my life), but that aside, beer seems to fall through the cracks whenever any non-tailgate foods are introduced. For the [...]

Calibowls

I do like this product, but even more so, I just like to say its name. I'm sorry if I find it overly funny, sometimes I'll do that with things, but c'mon, 'Calibowls'.. it sounds like an old person's word for nonsense. "There's a unicorn in the backyard grandpa!" said the little boy. "Calibowls!!" replied the old man.. So, what is it really? Well, actually, it's pretty simple. Calibowls are bowls with lips... sounds pretty simple doesn't it? Well, it looks pretty simple too, so I was amazed that there don't seem to be any other bowls out there quite like them! Calibowls have a patent pending, special lip around [...]

A Beverage from ME

The eternal question, 'Who am I?' The topic of the afternoon, 'What is ME?' ME is a new line of caffeine-free, all-natural beverages. The line of drinks launched at the beginning of the Fall, featuring four unique flavor combinations, each bursting with their own special 'personalities'. The marketing here is a bit of the beaten track, with each drink named for personality types, making your search for the perfect beverage more of a Match.com dating experience than a stroll down the soda aisle. I had the opportunity to choose between Vivacious, Curious, Uninhibited and Unavailable. Call me bad, but I went right for Uninhibited... ME contains zero caffeine and zero [...]

Julia vs Julia

Most foodies have likely heard of Julie & Julia by now; a recent film with Meryl Steep depicting the immortal Julia Child and Amy Adams playing Julie Powell, a woman on a quest to cook her way through Child's best dishes. I admit I'm a Julia Child fan. (There is even a famous photo in our household of yours truly as a baby, in the arms of the one and only Ms. Child.) With the movie so popular and so much press about Julia recirculating, I came across an article juxtaposing two 'great' tarragon chicken recipes... one from Julia Child and one from Meryl Streep. It's real Julia vs. screen [...]
