STEEL Restaurant – Friday 13th Menu

It's a new economy and restaurants are doing everything they can to continue and attract customers. 'Set menus' are reappearing as a means to more food for less money, as diners look to stretch their dollars at the dinner table. On this note, I recently took the opportunity to try a special occasion menu at a talked about Atlanta Japanese restaurant I'd yet to sample.ย  STEEL is engaging at first glance, with a zen garden-like atmosphere that includes an extravagant fountain, forming a literal rain curtain, wrapping around the bar and lounge area. My friend Sous had informed me about the dinner, but I had completely overlooked the fact that [...]

NEO Restaurant – Uncorked

NEO is one of the most upscale steps yet in the developing Atlanta dining scene. The contemporary Italian restaurant at The Mansion on Peachtree is a delectable addition to the city, as well as a welcome throwback to a true fine dining experience; something that is sometimes lost in this new age of the 'gastropub'. Being that it is a 'hotel restaurant', NEO offers breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. The menu selection spans the many hours of the day; from prosciutto eggs benedict in the morning, to a mouth watering ossobucco with risotto Milanese at dinner. NEO offers elegantly chosen and prepared cuisine throughout the day. Though already head and [...]

Jaipur Restaurant โ€“ Curacao

I'm happy to say that I'm a bit spoiled with my jobs, great food and travel are my loves.. and combining the two is simply the best. Having had the pleasure of visiting more than a few Caribbean islands, I will take this opportunity to make a foodie travel recommendation. There are a few destinations that can wow your palate (St. Barth and St. Martin are both fantastic!), but for a true glimpse of the beautiful melting pot cuisine of this tropical paradise, Curacao is tops. A mix of over 50 cultures, Curaรงao's food reflects the varied histories of its many different residents. Dutch, Spanish, Creole, Indonesian, Venezuelan, Indian, and [...]

Market Atlanta – W Hotel

Last week I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Jean Georges Vongerichten at the opening of his newest restaurant, Market. The dining room is housed in the one of the latest hotel openings in Atlanta... the W Buckhead. The W has opened three hotels in Atlanta over the past year, all with a unique focus on dining. W Midtown opened last year and heralded Jean Georges's arrival to Atlanta with Spice Market. W Downtown just opened last month, Laurent Tourondel adding a special flair with BLT Steak (full report to come). This is all about Market though, and more specifically the food inspired by Jean Georges; "where comfort food explores [...]

Black Sapote – Casa del Agua

Riviera Maya Foodie News Part III: I wanted to mention one final foodie find from my recent long weekend in the Riviera Maya. While traveling, we got to enjoy two villas.;the first in Playa del Carmen was Villa Aqua. The second, in Puerto Aventuras (about 15 minutes South of Playa) was Casa del Agua. Casa del Agua is a fantastic home, with the cool blue waters of the Caribbean gently lapping against the white, sandy beach it calls a front yard. Hammocks swing between palm trees and margaritas flow freely... this is truly paradise. The best part of staying at Casa del Agua are the creations of the head chef, [...]

Rosewood Mayakoba

Riviera Maya Foodie News Part II: Though we were staying in a private villa (and are generally averse to hotels), I had heard much fanfare about the new Mayakoba Resort; an expansive, sprawling, maze-like estate that is a collaborative effort between the Viceroy, Fairmont and Rosewood Hotels. After receiving more than a few "you've got to see it" reviews from friends who know the area, I decided that it was certainly worth a swing by.. if nothing else for cocktails and the views! We headed over to enjoy drinks at the Agave Azul Raw Bar & Tequila Library. The setting is elegant, overlooking the dimly lit lagoon below. The bar [...]

Maya Cuisine – Yaxche Restaurant

I recently had the opportunity to escape the cold for a long weekend to the Riviera Maya; a geographical area stretching along the Caribbean Sea from Cancun to the border of Belize. This territory is the heart of the ancient Mayan civilization, with the now bustling tourist city of Playa del Carmen laying smack in the middle. Before heading down, my friend and I independently scoured the net for restaurants of quality, and when, after much research, we came to the same conclusions, we knew we had picked the right place. Our first accommodation was just minutes walk from downtown Playa, in an amazing home called Villa Aqua. Our excitement [...]

Widmer Brothers Drifter Pale Ale

Widmer Brothers Brewing started as a dream for two brothers who just loved beer.ย  In 1984, Kurt and Rob Widmer helped lead the Pacific Northwest craft beer movement. In 1986, Widmer Brothers Brewing introduced the first American-style Hefeweizen; today, this unfiltered cloudy beer is the companyโ€™s signature brew and one of the best selling wheat beers in the country! The newest beer, Drifter, is Widmerโ€™s first true foray into the pale ale category. This is a truly amazing first attempt, with a flavor thatโ€™s unlike any Iโ€™ve tried before. The ale is very different from its pale cousins with strong citrus notes of grapefruit and tangerine well balanced against a [...]

4th & Swift

My Atlanta renaissance continues, and this time right down the street! The Old Fourth Ward is part of what makes up my neighborhood; created in the 1870s under the city ward system, it's a historically African American district on the east side of Atlantaโ€™s Downtown, birthplace of Martin Luther King as well as the location of Ebenezer Baptist Church. The area (to my delight!) is experiencing a period of rapid growth and reinvention, with a variety of bars, cafes, and cutting-edge restaurants gracing these so recently forgotten streets. 4TH & Swift is certainly central to the party... Housed in a long forgotten dairy's abandoned engine room, the restaurant retains much [...]

Craft Atlanta Birthday Dinner

I posted a tidbite a while back about the promotional lunch with Tom Colicchio at Craft Atlanta. Today I have the luxury of writing about an actual dining experience at Craft. My good friend spoiled me this year, taking me to Craft Atlanta for a celebratory dinner on my birthday. I must say that there is little better that can be done for a true foodie than treating them to a fine meal with company... and what a meal we had!! We started with a bit of bubbly... (how else can you celebrate??). A small amuse bouche of pulled-pork gougeres followed before we really hit full stride with the food. [...]

Varasano’s Pizza

I've been living in Atlanta for the past three years, and though I was very skeptical upon arrival, I have become pleasantly surprised with the culinary scene here... especially over the past year as I have gotten to know the city so much better. Despite finding a variety of quality restaurants, cafes and random lunch spots... one of the most glaring epicurean oversights remaining is pizza. I must put this statement in context, as I am a bit of a pizza snob. Having grown up in New Haven (pizza mecca, if you were not aware) and lived in New York City... I have a certain idea of what pizza should [...]

Santa Margherita Prosecco

Though Champagne is likely the most famous of the sparkling wines, there are MANY types of bubbly around the world. Spain has cava (among others) while Italy is best known for its Prosecco; a light, fruity, clean aperitif that is perfect on its own, or as a Bellini or mimosa. The origins of Prosecco really began towards the end of the 19th century; when the grape's popularity led to its continuous growth and production. Today Prosecco di Valdobbiadene is unquestionably one of the best known and most popular of the sparkling Italian wines with Santa Margherita being one of the most prominent producers. This wine's nose offers floral notes of [...]

Heirloom Restaurant – New Haven, CT

Though I grew up in New Haven, I haven't spent much time there over the past 10 years. Going back this past Thanksgiving was a truly great experience; not only seeing old friends after far too much time apart... but eating my way through some of my favorite old haunts, as well as some new additions to the neighborhood. Pizza was my central focus during any food discussion while at home. The blinders were on people, this is New Haven, pizza mecca... and I cannot get real pizza in Atlanta!. My first available lunch was taken at Yorkside Pizza, with meatball Parmesan and far too much pizza ordered (purposefully). More [...]

St. Johns Restaurant – Chattanooga

Foodie road trip pt. 2; After leaving Adairsville in the morning, we took the brief (1hr 20m) journey up I75 to Chattanooga, TN. Arriving midday, we quickly checked into our hotel, The Stonefort Inn, a quaint 'elder year' property located in the heart of the city (most specifically within walking distance of our dinner-dining choice - yes, walking in the South!). Sous is also 'press' and had gotten us passes to the Tennessee Aquarium. Apparently the Southeast is all about two things; college football and who can build the biggest, baddest aquarium (we all need something)... As Atlanta now boasts the 'biggest', we figured we had to see the previous [...]

Barnsley Gardens; Better than Cow Tipping

So, what do you do in North Georgia? Recently, my friend Sous and I decided to go on a 'foodie road trip', with a plan to keep the driving to within a three-hour radius (avoiding overly long drives, especially after dining experiences). To any of you reading this from the 'Northeast Corridor', you may be thinking that a three hour radius is more than enough time to do a true three-city tour de cuisine... with Boston, Providence, Hartford, New Haven, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington all in striking distance. To those of us in the Southeast (Atlanta specifically), this driving radius means that Birmingham and Chattanooga are the only [...]

Craft Restaurant Atlanta – Tom Colicchio

Recently, I was lucky enough to get to attend a media event for the opening of Tom Colicchio's (of restaurant empire and 'Top Chef' fame) newest restaurant, Craft Atlanta. Craft is the latest dining experience to be added to the Rosewood's most recent property, The Mansion on Peachtree. Though the Mansion currently offers an amazing fine-dining, Italian restaruant, NEO (full report to come!)... Craft adds an alternative, casual, upscale element while also delivering with its renowned, excellent food. Chef Colicchio hosted the casual event, ducking questions about current Top Chef developments and entertaining the lunch crowd with antics from the dishwashing line a few nights before. Passed apps included samplings [...]

Serenbe – Les Dames d’Escoffier – Food Festival

I love finding new things (in general). I truly love finding new foodie things. I absolutely love a new discovery that much more when it's right under my nose! This was my reaction to Serenbe, a self-sustained food 'village' located about 40 minutes South of Atlanta. "I had no idea this existed!" I chirped to my good friend 'Sous' (an elaborately derived nickname stemming from being my partner in foodie shenanigans). "Well, you don't know Atlanta and haven't ever tried to" she replied. "Valid point" was my only response. If I had even thought there was something like this buried in the obscure Southern counties of Atlanta, I would have [...]

Puerto Vallarta Restaurants – Cafe des Artistes

By far, the best perk of my main undertaking (running www.villascaribe.com) is the travel. Experiencing the delights of a tropical destination as part of a legitimate business outing is an unbelievably enjoyable part of my life. I recently returned from Mexico; the beautifully lush hills and beaches of Puerto Vallarta served as backdrop for a few real-estate meetings we had planned. Of course, in our downtime, we sampled the best of what PV dining had to offer. Our villa, Casa Salinas, had an excellent chef, so our group generally took dinner at home. Despite the cuisine available while overlooking the Pacific from our al fresco dining table, we did venture [...]

Whole Animal Cuisine – Are You Gonna Eat That Tongue?

I've been hearing more and more buzz about the concept of 'the whole cow' as an ever growing number of young chefs attempt to revive the craft of butchery. The idea is beautiful in its simplicity, start with properly raised and fed animals and leave nothing to chance, by allowing your kitchen staff to break down chickens, pigs, cows and more; as needed for their dishes. Why have an up-charging, semi-skilled, meat-packing middle-man dictate your kitchen's menu when there are talented chefs with sharpened knives standing at the wait? The Times dining section recently highlighted a few of the more distinguished restaurants basing their kitchens on the butchery concept, most [...]

Wisteria – Atlanta Dining

There are certain restaurants that you pass-by all the time. You might say to yourself, 'why haven't I tried that place yet?' or 'I keep meaning to eat there!'. For me, the latest check on my proverbial culinary bucket list (which is ever-expanding) was an Atlanta restaurant, Wisteria. I must have driven by this cute little brick building 50 times before I even noticed it was a restaurant. The next 50 times I drove by, I kept thinking I really should've tried it already.. and, last week, try it I finally did. I had the opportunity to dine with a friend of mine who was 'up for anything', and we [...]
