My new intern was working on this post about Yoplait Plenti for our Bite of the Rest (new product) section. I had asked her to look into the nutrients from Yoplait Plenti’s label boast of “with fruit, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds and whole grain oats, all mixed in.”

I mentioned to her that the name “Plenti” and the earthy-colored cup might make a consumer think that it’s packed with plenty of extra nutrients. Is it?

I started by asking this question to the Yoplait public relations professional myself and was told that, “These are legal claims so I’d have to check and secure approvals …”

We went back and forth until I received their bottom line: “Plenti approaches Greek yogurt in a unique way with fruit, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds and whole grain oats, all mixed in to help keep consumers more fulfilled. The unique texture and chewing experience helps consumers feel more satisfied…”

More fulfilled? Chewing experience? More satisfied? They needed legal counsel for that?

My suggestion: Don’t buy this yogurt thinking you’re getting extra nutrition. Plenti is another high-protein Greek yogurt in a brown wrapper. Each 5.5-ounce portion provides 140 and 150 calories, no saturated fat (of 1.5 to 2 grams total), 12 grams of sugar, 12 grams protein and a little — 1 gram — fiber.

You can easily get that 1 gram fiber boost by adding a heaping tablespoon of sunflower seeds or chopped almonds or 2 tablespoons of raspberries to any plain Greek yogurt — while adding other valuable nutrients as well.
