On our sibling trip, we started our day by yakking over a meal at one of Charleston’s many breakfast-all-day places.

First stop, Toast! All Day, as one sibling and hubby had eaten there during their last visit. I do suggest what I had, which was a Pig Candy bloody Mary made with Dixie Black pepper vodka ($16) and topped with candied bacon and pickle okra ($16) and an omelet with biscuit and grits ($26).

Big Bad Breakfast‘s Bloody Mary with candied bacon and pickled okra is just as good ($12). I’d also recommend their unusual huevos rancheros ($14). That’s Marsh Hen Mill grits with sliced sausage black beans, and salsas topped with avocado, eggs and crisp tortilla strips.

On our last day in Charleston, we learned how low the Low Country is and the city’s problems during torrential rain storms. Early in the morning, we received a notice from the African American Museum canceling our visit because of flash flooding.

We packed up and headed to the airport to find a breakfast place to sit and yak until it was time to drop us there.

We tried various apps to find one, even parking and running through the rain, only to discover they had just stopped serving breakfast. The lovely hostess there mentioned a nearby place serving breakfast all day, which is how we ended up at the Grit Counter.

I tried their Ranchero Bowl ($16) with lots of house chorizo, smoked tomato grits, green tomato salsa verde, a fried egg with smoked jalapeño sauce and sprinkled with fried hominy. It was interesting enough to pick at until it was time to check in at the airport.
