We joined the ranks this time at L’Escale in Greenwich, Connecticut, where we ended our meal with a sparkler and song! This waterside restaurant is the place to celebrate, as singing servers bring handheld fireworks emitting sparks.
We first helped the town’s economy by shopping on Greenwich Avenue before heading down to dinner. We’ll need to return in summertime to dine waterside.
Our meal began with a pâte à choux amuse bouche while we perused the menu. We were sharing everything. Once we decided on the seared Hudson Valley foie gras ($35) with roasted quince, brioche toast, and quince-infused jus, I opted for a glass of Bordeaux, Château Greysac, Medoc, Bordeaux, FR 2018. ($22), while one dining partner chose the Chardonnay, Chalk Hill, Sonoma, CA 2022 ($19).
We asked our waitstaff to serve our following courses in waves; they happily accommodated.
The Maine lobster mosaic ($28) features chunks of the crustacean, asparagus, avocado, grapefruit and baby kale with a sour orange essence. Georgette’s Salad ($19) has kale, frisée, sliced Brussels sprouts, quinoa, avocado, delicata squash chunks, radishes, almonds, pomegranate ariels and hearts of palm in Moscatel dressing. Both fresh and tasty.
The pan-seared tiny Nantucket bay scallops ($33) were scattered over a squash ring atop veggies in a carrot ginger mousseline. So delicate.
Our friendly maitre d’ delivered a complimentary serving of their fabulous crispy French fries. Not to be missed. I always have room for fries!
We should have stopped there as we were happily satiated, but we had two more entrees to try. One was the roasted Sasso Rouge chicken ($46) with hen of the woods mushrooms, spinach, Thumbelina carrots and pommes purée. The other, the goat Gouda, crusted halibut ($55) with artichoke puree, chanterelles and Swiss chard in a gooseberry sauce.
Stuffed, we still ordered one dessert — the ice cream-filled profiteroles ($17) in a Valrhona chocolate sauce — for the sparkler. The waiters came in song with the lit sparkler. Our lovely maitre d’ also gave us a crème brûlée and placed some biscotti on the table.
We left over so much that I took the entrees and gave them to a homeless man I passed on my way home.
I recommend L’Escale for its quiet, elegant setting, good food and sparkler with song!
