Three Upper East Side friends and I met at the classic British food-driven pub, Jones Wood Foundry, on 76th just off First Avenue. When there in the past, I had always indulged in both their irresistible humongous Yorkshire pudding plus the creamy chicken and foie gras parfait. Sadly the large hollow popovers are only available on weekends!
We four started by sharing the parfait, which amazingly costs $2 less than it did PreCovid! The pate comes with two slices of toasted brioche halved, grape chutney and cornichons ($15) that was perfect for the four of us. It was good; just not as good as in the past. I sipped a glass of Garzon Cabernet Franc ($12), one the Fuller’s London Pride Pale Ale ($9), the others the Elderflower spritz ($12).
One friend had the tuna tartar Japonaise with wasabi, tempura bits, radishes and pickled mushroom with a side of an herb salad ($16), another the piled high grilled sliced hanger steak (cooked as requested) topped with caramelized shallots over “bubble and squeak” (cooked potatoes and cabbage) and sauteed spinach ($28). Another friend ordered their large (half-pound) JWF burger ($16) topped with Cheddar with a side of fries (+$8) that we all shared; it was too big to finish!
I tried their pan-fried salmon sitting in a puddle of spinach puree with some cauliflower ($26).
