We met at Toloache in the Theatre District as that is one of my friend’s favorite located halfway between our homes.
We, of course, started with a bowl of their traditional guacamole ($14) with avocado, tomato, onion, cilantro and serrano chilies served with warm tortilla chips. Since my friend preferred mild guacamole, I asked for some diced jalapeños while the waiter recommended some of their hot sauce. We accompanied that with margies, ordering their “Chef’s selection;” I asked for mine made with mezcal in a salted glass. My drink came unsalted.
I reminded our waiter about the hot sauce he recommended. I laughed when he finally delivered it when we were well into our entrees. Service was certainly lacking.
Although it was brunch, my dining partner ordered the fish Baja-style fluke tacos with spicy jicama slaw, guacamole (two for $15) and the suckling pig carnitas with cactus salad, chicharron, salsa verde and queso fresco (two for $15). Rice and black beans accompanied each of those orders.
Being in the mood for brunch food, I ordered huevos rancheros with two farm eggs, tomatillo chipotle salsa, corn, queso, tortilla and crema ($15). Sadly it was one of the most flavorless of my favorite Mexican breakfast dish I’ve ever sampled. (Pre-COVID19 I would have sent it back as it was that bad!) I added whatever was at the table to attempt to make it palatable. Skip this dish for sure.
If you go, I’d only recommend the Chef’s selection margies, the guac and a couple of tacos. Skip the huevos rancheros.
