Everyone has their idea of what the best are… It doesn’t even matter the subject is, everyone has their own opinions. Give me the top-10 restaurants in your city, now your state, now your country, now the world. Did any of the selections from your first list make it to your last list? Well, those of us from New Haven can say so, at least when quoting the London-based, Guardian Newspaper’s latest ‘The 50 best things to eat in the world‘ article.

What a statement by the way… The 50 BEST things to eat, in the WORLD! When I first saw this, I just knew I had to give it a once over. The list is all over the place, starting off with things like ‘The Best Place to Eat Oysters’ (Cuan Oysters on Sketrick Island, Northern Ireland) and ‘The Best Place to Drink Milkshakes’ (Fosselman’s, Los Angeles USA)… But where were the heavy-hitters I wondered.. Who had the best-burgers, the best chocolate, the best pizza?!!

As a New Haven native, I pensively searched for any pizza reference; wondering, with such a diverse list, if any of my hometown favorites could possibly be represented. The noted offerings span the globe, but to my delighted surprise (though not shock), Pepe’s pizza was noted as the one of the BEST things to eat in the world. The author notes that:

“:You could generate enough heat to fuel a brick oven with the argument over which country bakes the world’s best pizza: Italy, where the concept originated, or America, where it was globalised. Neapolitan purists will make pilgrimages to hotspots such as La Sorrentina, outside Naples, whose chef has won the prestigious Naples Pizza Championship, but we contend that the upstart Yanks do it better. The best American pizza can be found, not in New York as is commonly assumed, but in New Haven, Connecticut, where the Pepe family has been spinning dough since 1925. Their white clam pie has no equals.

NO equals indeed.. As someone who still salivates at the chance to get a slice of hometown pizza, it’s great to know that my childhood foodie loves continue to garner international praise.
