Roofers Union in the heart of DC’s Adams Morgan neighborhood offers classic American fare with great friendly service. I stopped into their main dining room (up one level from the street) during a visit to DC, as their guest. Conversation is easy at this spacious, comfortable place with high ceilings and one wall of glass windows.

We started by selecting the beers for our flight of four ($12). We each tried four different ones from their extensive menus of beers on tap. My favorites were from the “malty to dark to brooding” section of the ever-changing beer menu — the rich barrel-aged (in bourbon casks) barleywine “st. seditious” first and the Westbrook stout “Siberian black magic panther.” Both rich and flavorful!

Pickled something was the theme of our apps. One had sautéed and pickled cauliflower plus pickled shishito peppers all in a light mustard vinaigrette ($8); the other burrata served with roasted and pickled grapes, dusted with fennel pollen and served with house-made anise crackers ($10). Unusual for sure.

Do try the grilled flatbread (new to the menu) with oniony ramps, tomato sauce, feta and mozzarella ($17). When asked which entree would be the best, both our server and the manager’s eyes opened wide as they described the Peruvian half-chicken served with green beans, roasted pee-wee potatoes and caramelized onions along with a special housemade spicy salsa verde ($22). Instead of a tomatillo sauce, it’s a blend of lime juice, jalapeños, olive oil, onions and mayo. So good! We not only dipped the chicken and potatoes in it but the flatbread as well.

Worth the visit.
