After seeing the “Zookeeper’s Wife,” a beautifully filmed Holocaust movie about a couple who sheltered Jews in the Warsaw Zoo, we headed to La Palapa on St. Marks Place in the East Village for a south-of-the-border bite at my friend Barbara Sibley’s place.

With our happy hour margaritas ($10), we ordered the guacamole ($14) served with house-made cumin spiced corn chips. Loved — and devoured — the three flavorful dips that the server placed on the table. That trio consisted of a salsa guajillo (mild roasted dried chilies), salsa verde de tomatillo  (medium fresh tomatillo salsa) and the piquant salsa de Serrano torreado (spicy roasted Serrano chilies in vinegar). So good.

We shared the rich chicken enchiladas covered in a complex mole sauce topped with housemade queso fresco and a Mexican crema ($19). With that, we ordered a salad. I had suggested the nopal (cactus) one thinking once my dining partner tried it, she’s like it. Not! Guess it’s an acquired taste. Those grilled nopal came with radishes, served over greens ($10).

I’d recommend a trip to La Palapa for good authentic Mexican fare.
