After sampling the fare at Dominique Bistro in the West Village, I knew I had to return. This French Bistro brings a touch of Paris to the area. This could turn into my go-to place for a quiet tasty dinner with good service where I can hear my dining parters and enjoy soft music.
As their guest, we ordered many more dishes that I would if on my own. We started with that pear salad ($15) of baby arugula, aged gorgonzola and candied walnuts I had sampled at the opening, followed by tender octopus tentacles over a chickpea puree with a salad of arugula, olives and potatoes($16). With this we sipped on a wonderful Chateau Martinet, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux 2009 ($68). The dark red, beautifully balanced French wine went well with all our selections. Their wine list is 50% French wine, the other half sourced internationally from a variety of regions.
A cavatelli pasta course was next with a flavorful, tender short rib ragu and root vegetables topped with whipped ricotta and micro basil ($21).
For entrees we split two dishes: the three giant scallops that came with a lightly truffled potato puree, lots of smoked bacon (lardons), all garnished with some micro greens and sliced truffles ($31). And, the classic French dish of duck confit with a pile of roasted fingerling potatoes and an arugula salad ($28).
Keeping with European style, I ordered a cheese course for dessert ($14, or $5 each) with Sottocenere, Brebirousse D’ Argental and Fourme d’ Ambert and my dining partner the crème brulee ($9). I’d recommend either.
After dinner we headed downstairs space where the piano bar is located to see the end of that evening’s show. That intimate area is open for dinner nightly and — when there’s a performance (twice weekly)— there is a cover charge of $10 in addition to dinner. For that show schedule, click here.
