GST (Greenwich Street Tavern) in Tribeca — a sports bar/tavern — now offers brunch on Saturday and Sunday brunch from 10 am to 2 pm. I was invited recently to sample their fare. We started with their homemade jalapeño bloody Maria’s made with tequila ($11, buy 1 get one during brunch). We had been warned they are very spicy; ours were tasty, not at all too piquant.
I liked that they offer a perfectly sized breakfast slider with a fried egg, crispy bacon, pepper Jack cheese & chipotle mayo on mini potato roll as a single ($7) or for three ($13). I’d recommend these. I also recommend anything with their tasty creamy and a bit spicy jalapeño cheddar grits ($7, a side).
The lobster Benedict served up a hearty portion of that crustacean, sauteed, with fresh avocado and a poached egg on an English muffin topped with Hollandaise sauce ($18) served with seasoned home fries containing peppers and onions. I really liked the crispy potatoes, but not the lobster as it was not fresh.
The soft shelled breakfast tacos are filled with egg, sausage, Jack cheese and avocado, and come with those wonderful grits (3 for $13).
For a light more lunch-like fare, I’d recommend the honey-mustard glazed salmon over a mixed green salad sprinkled with goat cheese and pine nuts ($14).
I thought the ricotta pancakes topped with butterscotch syrup ($12) would be too sweet for me, but once the pancakes absorbed the syrup they were absolutely wonderful, not at all cloying. I’d also suggest ordering them. They also offer it topped with vanilla ice cream ($2), but that would be too rich for me.
The management insisted we sample the chocolate peanut butter cheesecake ($6) that comes with a scoop of ice cream ($2) and many dollops of whipped cream. Not worth the calories.
