Pier 66 Maritime (AKA the Frying Pan) is one of my favorite summertime haunts. I’ve been taking friends — both New Yorkers and out-of-towners — to this historic former Lackawanna railroad barge docked in the Hudson River at 26th Street for years. To those of us who frequent it, we’ve always called  his floating restaurant The Frying Pan, distinguished by a big black iron skillet near the entrance. This year it seems to be sporting a new name: Pier 66 Maritime.

Whatever it’s called, don’t miss an evening there while we still have balmy late summer nights. It’s a casual place where you order at the bar and pick up your food and utensils when your buzzer goes off. That means no one is pushing you or order more, or pay up and leave. You hang out as long as you want. A New York find!

The food is fresh and plentiful. One night recently, we had a bucket of peel-and-eat shrimp (1 pound for $24), mussels and frites ($16), and their mezza trio ($12) with tzatziki, hummus, herbed feta and grilled pita and sat for hours watching the sunset.

If you’ve never been — try to get there this year before it closes for the season. Weather permitting it should be open, but to be sure check their facebook page to confirm that they’re still open.
