We tripped over Bea, in Hell’s Kitchen, after seeing Rock of Ages at the Helen Hayes Theatre. It’s a loud rock musical set in the ’80s that tells its story through songs from iconic groups of that time. If you go, do stay until the second much better act, as the open act dragged a bit.
At Bea (named from the proprietor’s grandmother), I’d recommend the shrimp toast ($12). It’s not the usual thin toast spread with a shrimp paste, but a thick baguette spread with avocado, green Tabasco and onions and topped with large, very tender, shrimp pieces. Also good is the roasted beet salad with blue cheese, pecans and arugula in a sherry vinaigrette ($10).
The best dish was that night’s special of succulent striped bass with Brussels sprouts, corn and red onions ($20).
I’d recommend Bea if you’re looking for a place in the theatre district, and Rock of Ages to friends who grew up in the 80s.

Great post! The shrimp toast and sea bass look delicious. Looking at their menu, they seem to have some nice dishes, like the English muffin burger or the tuna tartare and guacamole. I will definitely give it a try!
