With La Plage was walking distance from where we were staying at the beach, we stopped by more than once. This alfresco white-tablecloth restaurant with unusual combinations of fresh foods is worth trying if you’re in the area.
I ordered a japapeño margarita from their libation menu, purportedly made with jalapeño tequila, fresh squeezed lime juice ($13) and an unnecessary splash of premade sour mix. They first served it sans the spicy tequila, but when remade was fine. That mistake was my only issue with the restaurant.
One night we each had a couple of apps or salads making a light summer meal. I’d recommend any of these including a salad of cinnamon-sprinkled tart green apple slices with walnuts and blue cheese in a sesame dressing, garnished with mache ($12) or the slices of red and golden beets, sprinkled with goat cheese, pumpkin seeds and microgreens, then garnished with supremes of sweet naval oranges ($11).
I’d highly recommend the unusual roulade with paper-thin avocado slices wrapped around almost undressed Maryland crab ($15) held together by a soupçon of aioli, served with pan-fried bread-coated tomato slices, surrounded by drizzles of the aioli. Also good are the PEI mussels in a flavorful broth topped with polenta croutons ($15). The creamy white asparagus soup ($10) comes with a chunk of cooked monkfish.
The unusual pan-roasted branzino ($31) arrives over Little Neck clams overflowing with chorizo sausage slices, steamed Swiss chard and couscous. Interesting.
We skipped desserts, as — after all — we were appearing in bathing suits all day!
Worth the visit.
