Before heading to the opening of The Last Five Years at Long Wharf theatre, I stopped in for a meal at Thali, New Haven’s innovative Indian restaurant on Orange Street with the creations of Chef Prasad Chirnomula (who also owns Oaxaca).

While deciding what to order, we nibbled on the two types of crispy papadums along with the flavorful chutneys brought to the table.

For apps, we nibbled the three amchur potatoes and green pea samosas ($6). The gobi  – cauliflower in a hot cilantro garlic sauce ($6) – which is to die for. Seriously, I could eat a bowl of that for dinner as it’s perfectly seasoned. We also had the the Konkan crab appetizer ($16) that used to only have crab, but now also contains shrimp. It’s in coconut milk flavored with black mustard seeds,  garlic, ginger, serrano chili and curry leaves.

Loved the spicy, yet not overly so, chicken tikka masalas in a creamy tomato sauce served withe rice ($18); I highly recommend. My only disappointment on the evening were the tandoor-grilled lamb chops seasoned with cumin and mace, as they were mushy ($34). With that we had — hot from the same tandoor oven — Naan — warm, crisp yet tender…perfection.

Off we went to see The Last Five Years, a musical play with two actors. The show is a tad confusing at first. The female character Cathy sings their story starting at the end of their marriage and ending on their first date, while the male character Jamie tells their story from the first meeting to the collapse of their marriage. Yes, they meet in the middle with a scene they play together. Whatever, it’s thoroughly enjoyable theatre with outstanding  performances!  Try to catch it before it closes on  June 1, 2014.
