China Blue recently opened the old Capsouto Freres space in Tribeca on the corner of Watts and Washington Streets. It’s Cafe China’s Yiming Wang and Xian Zhang ‘s new location serving the cuisine of Shanghai. The space is large, service knowledgeable and attentive.
We started with a bamboo steamer filled with Shanghai steamed soup buns (6 for $12). I learned a couple years ago that it’s tricky to eat these soup-filled dumpling. If you let them cool a tad, you can dip them in the soy-rice vinegar-ginger sauce and pop them in your mouth in one bite — otherwise you can get scalded by the hot soup inside the dumplings.
I learned how to eat these fun dumplings when at Full House Cafe a couple years ago — and discovered there are thousands (yes thousands) of videos online how to do so.
We also had the unusual crispy radish puffs (4 for $12) and meaty pork ribs ($19) Wuxi style, that is in a sweet sauce served atop steamed bok choy.
We followed that with the delicious Shanghai pan-fried noodles ($12) with lots of veggies and the eight delicacies ($16) in spicy sauce — a delicious blend of chicken, shrimp, dried shrimp, tofu and stir-fried veggies.
I’d recommend any of these dishes and a visit to China Blue.
