During my previous visit to the Wharf-Madison Beach Hotel, I sat on the deck enjoying the summer breeze off the sound. This time  it was in winter and  we cozily dined in front of a roaring fire, sipping a French Sauvignon Blanc — Henri Bourgeois Sancerre “Cuvée Les Bonnes Bouches” 2012 Loire ($45). What a way to spend an afternoon!

To me a cup of soup was the perfect start on the cold winter’s day. Their  hearty black bean and chorizo soup in a light broth certainly hit the spot.  My dining companion chose oysters ($3 each) and shrimp  ($4 each) from the raw bar, served on ice with both cocktail sauce and mignonette.

There’s not much more New England than a lobster roll.  This one served on a brioche roll comes accompanied by crispy sea salt and black pepper french fries (Market price).   I asked for a side of their creamy cole slaw to go with it. Sadly I actually left lots of the lobster in my plate as it wasn’t as fresh as it should have been. What was fresh was the grilled portobello topped with creamy goat cheese with an arugula, tomato and fennel salad ($10).

Be sure to save room for dessert! Three of us shared and were satiated by the decadent flourless chocolate cake topped along with sweetened marcarpone drizzled with a Kahlúa caramel sauce topped with candied orange peel ($6). Worth the calories.
