After a couple years of asking me to join my friend Ruby at her favorite Turkish restaurant in West Haven, I finally made a date to go to Saray Turkish Restaurant, and was glad I did. Everything, made on premise, is delicious.
We started with a platter of mixed appetizers (small $8.95; large $16.00)that included hummus (chickpeas mashed into a paste with lemon and flavored with Turkish tahini), haydari (thick yogurt with garlic and dill), antep ezme (onion, red & green peppers, tomatoes and garlic), eggplant salad and eggplant soslu (eggplant, sautéed fresh tomatoes, peppers and garlic) and warm bread. Plus their coban salad — Çoban salatası — ($7.95) the refreshing combo of tomatoes, onions cucumbers, green pepper and lots of parsley in a lemony dressing. And crisp cigar-shaped cheese pastries ( sigara boregi ), fillo filled with Turkish feta cheese and parsley, and then deep fried ($6.50)
Next we were served a large grilled meat platter with an assortment of Adana kebab, Doner kebab, lamb chops and beef shish kebab ($22.95)
If you’re interested in the warm, sweet kunefe ($6.95) — the cheese pastry (from shredded phyllo dough) soaked in sweet sugar-based syrup and topped with minced pistachios — you need to order it ahead — or wait! Be sure to do so. We also sampled the kazandibi ($4.95), their version of creme brulee without the crust, a a thick pudding with golden-brown coating of caramelized sugar.
I suggest stopping by Saray Turkish Restaurant – as the good is good, atmosphere fun and it won’t break the bank. Oh, it’s a BYOB, and they are happy to uncork it for you!
