Bonnie: Steamfresh veggies warm a dietitian’s heart. What’s not to love as each package contains pure vegetables and nothing more. This makes eating the government’s recommended 2 1/2 cups a day easy, delicious and nutritious.
(That recommendation, by the way, is based on a person needing 2000 calories a day … so you may need more or less depending on your calorie level.)
These veggies go directly from your freezer to the microwave and steam right in their own bags. You can season them to taste — if you want to — after they’re cooked. No need for any cleaning, cutting or chopping the vegetables, and no dirtying a pan.
That is, unless you choose to season them. Last time I made Steamfresh Select Green Beans I sautéed the just-steamed veggies in a little butter, seasoned with salt and freshly ground pepper, and topped with fresh roasted chopped almonds. Simple. Delicious.
Steamfresh are so good that earlier this month Supermarket Sampler — my syndicated column — awarded its coveted, annual Golden Shopping Cart of the Year award, honoring the best new product of 2007, to Birds Eye Steamfresh. For the past 18 years Carolyn Wyman and I have been selecting one product that we deem tasty, healthy and on-trend to receive this award.
You can purchase Steamfresh as Singles (Super Sweet Corn, Baby Brussels Sprouts and Sweet Peas) that contain four single-serve bags, or the Steamfresh Selects, Mixtures and Premium Selects (a wide variety of choices). A 12-ounce bag serves 4.
And, be on the lookout this March for Birds Eye’s new Steamfresh Rice offering long grain white rice, whole grain brown rice and long grain white rice with mixed vegetables. These will cost $1.69 for a 10-ounce package, which will serve 2. Although I haven’t seen or tried these yet, I know I’ll wish they made a brown rice and veggie mixture.
Bryan: I’d like to say otherwise, but I have trouble keeping up with all my worldly responsibilities. I don’t floss as often as I’m told to, and call me a bad person, but I find it difficult to get my recommended serving of vegetables everyday. There, I said it. Veggies are great, but my schedule is just not regular enough to keep them in the fridge (a rotting problem) or get the full benefit of fresh preparation (a time problem). Birds Eye Steamfresh frozen vegetables solve both my problems in one fell swoop. Also, they are a quality product that thankfully hasn’t been coated with, or stored side-by-side with, an overwhelming sauce. These veggies are clean and natural and have the added benefit of the simplest preparation on the market; just stick the bag in the microwave! Though I sometimes take a rigid stance against frozen/prepackaged food, Birds Eye has done everything right with this product. So, just enjoy it for dinner.
Eric: I’ve become an avid vegetable fan in the last few years. Only recently have I started looking forward to having a big salad for lunch, or snacking on some roughly chopped red pepper or broccoli, or even enjoying the leftover sautéed vegetables that I used to scoff at as a little kid. I’ve finally discovered that I actually enjoy vegetables, even as much as fruit, and prefer them cooked fresh — not frozen. This is why I was surprised by the Steamfresh product. It’s a frozen product designed to taste fresh enough to please even a true foodie. While I would always recommend passing your local farmers’ market to pick up some fresh vegetables when possible, this is one of those products I would stock in my freezer in case of an unexpected late-night dinner, or as a quick side dish to a meal.
I absolutely love these. My favorite is the corn. It taste as close as you can get to garden fresh. I am not one for buying so called convenience foods, but this has won me over. Great idea for a quick veggie that doesn’t taste quick.

Thanks for the flour you sent me as a winner of the January contest!
I just tried the brown rice and it is wonderful! I am not usually a brown rice lover, but I will be now! Easy to prepare and the rice came out PERFECT! The bag is a two serving bag, and it is just right for tonight’s meal and leftover’s for tomorrow. I hope my store keeps stocking them!
My husband & I LOVE the long grain white rice both plain and with carrots, peas & corn. He is the rice lover of the family and he’s never had better rice. I am the lover of easy & good in the family. Unlike my attempts at cooking long grain rice myself, this rice comes out perfect every time. I like the brown rice too but he will stick with the white. Thank you for a wonderful product.
I can’t believe how wonderful the whole steamfresh line up is! It always comes out perfectly and the vegetables taste as close to fresh as you can get. I have become quite fond of the brown rice and has helped me greatly to lose a few pounds! It’s so easy to make that I don’t mind making it, so I don’t go grabbing a dough-nut or something instead. Please keep it coming! I keep telling everyone I know who hasn’t tried it, to try it. It’s easy, good for you, easy, delicious and (did I mention) EASY! Thank you Bird’s Eye!
The brown rice has a wonderful texture and it tastes better than any brown rice I’ve ever eaten.

Can anyone tell me if the fact that it is cooked in plastic in the microwave is a problem? I have heard that it might cause cancer.
Hey Jill,
Steamfresh Vegetables and Steamfresh Meals for Two are packaged in a special bag specifically designed for microwave cooking. Our bags are totally different from common kitchen plastic wrap. Steamfresh bags are 100% microwave oven safe and are specially designed from plastics meeting FDA regulations and do not contain PVC, Phthalate, BPA, PFOA or melamine.
We recently had a steamfresh meals for two delicious. It had pineapple in the mixture but cannot find it anymore. Can you help me?
Hey Sandra,
I think the meal you are referring to is our Birds Eye Voila! Sweet & Sour Chicken. It has tender chicken, sweet pineapple chunks, julienne carrots, onion strips and colorful red and green peppers tossed in an authentic Asian sauce. We do have an Asian inspired Steamfresh Meal for Two that we think you may like as well called Asian Style Chicken Vegetable Medley. Like all of our Steamfresh Meals for Two, it cooks to perfection in the microwave in just 10 minutes. As for ingredients, it combines marinated and grilled chicken breast tossed with lo mein noodles, broccoli, carrots, baby corn and sugar snap peas topped with a delicious Asian style sauce. Feel free to check out our other Steamfresh Meals for Two varieties at – http://www.birdseyesteamfresh.com/meals/default.aspx.
If you post your zip code we can find a store near you that carries the Birds Eye Voila! meal and Steamfresh Meals for Two!
Thanks!
Steamfresh vegetables are convenient and delicious, and we have been eating them since their introduction to the marketplace. However, my husband is concerned that the bag is made of plastic and is reluctant to eat Steamfresh products. Could you please enlighten me re my husband’s concern about the plastic content of the Steamfresh bag. I lookforward to your reply. Thank you.
Hi Fran,
Thanks for the post. Keep them coming!

I have trouble finding the Steamfresh singles. I am in San Jose (95124) – local stores such as Safeway stock Steamfresh but the singles are hard to find.
I think this is a great new (ish) range. I (in common with some earlier posters) am not a great user of many convenience foods, but these make getting your vegies fast and easy.
Good product, as food consciousness is improving I think it will do well.
Andy

Does the steam fresh bag contain BPA? It seems like everything made of any kind of plastic contains that chemical. What are you to eat or cook with today?
Hi Sherra,
Steamfresh packaging is specifically designed with your safety in mind. Steamfresh packaging does not use any Bisphenol A (BPA), nor does our supplier use BPA in any of the raw materials that they use in their manufacturing plants. Steamfresh is an ideal way to safely enjoy microwave prepared vegetables, side dishes and meals. Let us know if you have any other questions!
Thanks, Ashley
Please! If your vegetables are in BPA free bags, let the consumers know. It should say so on the product. I have almost stopped using the Steam Fresh vegetables; though, I absolutely love them. But I have a one year old that I must be concerned about. Is there any way for me to confirm that your product is BPA or other harmful chemicals free?
Thank you.

I’ve started eating the steamfresh brown rice to loose weight. I eat the brown rice bag with a little bit of diced chicken. I know this is for two, but it makes a good little chicken bowl for lunch. Is this bad?
I purchased your product a couple of days ago…t was Steamfresh Fresh Fozen Vegetables….I prepared it according to directions and was highly dissapoited….the package contained many “long” hairs in my noodles and I was unable to eat the rest….I cannot believe the Birds Eye would let their workers not use hairnets….it was disgusting…you lost a customer
I eat the Birdseye Steamers every day. I eat the entire bag and was concerned about the plastic being toxic….thanks for clearing that up. Now maybe I’ll eat two per day : )
Steamfresh Singles in other veggies:
The Brussel’s sprouts are the only one of the three of the steamfresh singles that fit my dietary needs. I would like to see Broccoli, Califlower, Corn, all with no seasoning, so I can put with brown rice for one dish meals.
I too am looking for Steamfresh Singles. I used to buy them at Albertsons but have not found them anywhere for several months now. My zip code is 88061. I would also like to see a larger variety of veggies available as singles.
Does the packaging contain BPA?
I LOVE Birdseye Singles but cannot find them any more. I used to buy them at Stop and Shop but every time I inquire about them the answer is, we don’t have them. Are they still being packaged,is it just Stop & Shop?
I recently tried steamfresh broccoli cuts. It was a total disappointment. The package contained mostly pieces of stems and very little florets. I will not buy this product again.
My husband buys your Steam Fresh vegetables and FILLS up the frig; he loves them! I read that the bags did not have PVC, BPA, etc. which is fantastic, so I’ll be sharing his veggies. My question is: Can the bags be recyclable and what category are they classified? If they are healthy(though not organic), and also recyclabe, then they are just about perfect. Enjoyed your site. Joy
I understand the stem fresh veggie bags are safe after reading your comments. My husband LOVES Steam Fresh and fills our frig full with them, eating for breakfast and any other time. My question is: Are the bags recylable and what category are they? Now that I read they are in safe bags, I will join in the feast of veggies with my husband. Joy
The Birds Eye Single are apparently being phased out. None of my area supermarkets have the Brussel Sprouts any more, and NONE of the Singles products are listed on the BirdsEye website.
It’s possible that the packaging is being replaced or updated, but I doubt it. I believe some other brands are starting to sell single servings of un-sauced or lightly-sauced frozen veggies. I am very disappointed in BirdEye, as once again a good product is pulled because it didn’t make ENOUGH profit for the corporation.
Please help me get some Single Serve Steam Fresh veggies again, none of my stores have them! My Zip code is 49519. Is there a place online where I can purchase them? I couldn’t see them on the Birds Eye website either. I was especially interested in the single serve Baby Brussels sprouts. Thank you, Deanna.
I am still trying to find Steamfresh Si
ngles. My zipcode is 88061. If no store in my area sells them can they be ordered on line? If so. where?

The Birdseye single portions are awesome. I’ve only been able to buy the brussel sprouts and corn at my local grocery. I’m going to ask if they could also carry the peas. I live alone. I’m on a low salt diet so it’s hard to find veggies that aren’t either in butter or cream sauce. Thanks for these!!!
do you know if the steamfresh bags are sous vide safe? read they don’t contain PVC, Phthalate, BPA, PFOA or melamine from earlier posts (are they still given changes over the past years?). wondering if they’re safe for sous vide cooking also. thanks!
