Unilever is recalling two varieties of Skippy peanut butter — Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread and Skippy Reduced Fat Super Chunk Peanut Butter Spread — because it may be skippy-contaminated with salmonella.

To date, no illnesses have been linked to the recall. According to the US Food Safety website, “Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”

The peanut butter that’s being recalled is packaged in 16.3 oz. plastic jars with used-by dates of May 16-21, 2012.

Unilever detected possible salmonella through its own testing. According to the company, the recalled jars were distributed to retail outlets in Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.
