At 8:45 A.M. on a Friday morning, the tables at Maialino — a neighborhood Roman trattoria overlooking Gramercy Park — were full. Luckily, I had called ahead to make a reservation as I was meeting my friend Pat for her birthday.IMG_7122 We’d both been to dinner at this newest restaurant from Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group, and had heard great things about breakfast. We weren’t disappointed.

My Caio e Pepe Strapazzato ($11), soft scrambled eggs loaded with Pecorino cheese and freshly ground pepper came with crisp cracker-like bread. Pat’s fluffy Ricotta Pancakes were topped with fresh ricotta cheese and a side serving of maple syrup. We shared an order of Pancetta al Peppe Nero ($6), thick cut peppery bacon.

We ended breakfast with a neither too sweet, nor too fatty lemon IMG_7119scone, brought to the table with a lit candle in honor of her special day.

Each menu item was perfection; the service even better. A great way to start any day.
