After years of controversy, the Pavillion restaurant in the stone structure that anchors the north end of Union Square Park finally opened earlier this summer. Restaurateur Simon Oren (of the 5 Napkin Burger chain and others fame), ended up with chef Mario Urgiles, formerly of Maison, after Wayne Dish left the project.

I stopped by recently on a balmy summer eve to sample what’s been described as a market cafe, highlighting produce from the square’s greenmarket. No market specials were available that eve.

The fresh sliced bread comes with a flavorful sweet red pepper flavored cream cheese to nibble after you’ve ordered. And so does your appetizer!

We literally had just handed the waiter the wine list after ordering when the goat cheese tart ($11.95) was placed in front of us. Way too quickly! I’d have preferred having a sip of my wine before being served.

That tart is puff-pastry tart topped with roasted tomatoes, drizzled with a seasoned goat cheese and covered with arugula all drizzled with balsamic. Especially good for those who don’t like the flavor of goat cheese as it’s more of a mild dressing than rich flavorful chevre.  The wine finally arrived after we had consumed the tart.

With the recommendation of the server who raved about the dish, I tried the short rib ravioli  ($19.95) in beef jus topped with fresh grana panando. I wouldn’t recommend this bland dish with overcooked gummy pasta.  I would recommend a visit to the open airy Pavillion on a warm summer night for just drink.

Word has it that the Pavillion should be open through October.
