Driving north along the west coast in Barbados, we came upon The Fish Pot located right along the sea just north of a little fishing village — Shermans — and decided to stop for lunch. Silly us. We hadn’t made a reservation as we thought we only needed them for dinner.
We returned New Year’s Day, this time with a reservation. It was worth the wait. Good food, friendly service and a picturesque water view.
Apps included a Pickled Conch Salad with avocado and green mango ($19) and a Seafood Ceviche of super-fresh shrimp octopus, tuna, squid, with diced tomato and onions flavored with fresh lime juice and cilantro ($16). We followed that with a Poached Pear and Arugula Salad with oven-dried grape tomatoes, small chucks of fried goat cheese, sprinkled with fresh red onions all in a passion-fruit vinaigrette ($15).
The Yellow-fin Tuna Burger was perfectly cooked — a bit rare — served on foccacia with dill mayo along with mixed greens and french fries ($21); a nicely seasoned (Read: Hot, but not too so) Western Indian Madras Chicken Curry came with rice, fresh pappadum (a crisp bread made from lentil flour) and chutney. The Hermit Crab Viognier Marsanne (2002, Australia) was a perfect match for our food selections.
Since it was Melanie’s 50th b-day, we didn’t pass up the desserts. The coconut creme brulee ($11) and fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries in a chocolate cup with white chocolate sauce ($11) were tasty, but nothing special – other than the 5-0 birthday candle I had had hidden in my purse.
